5 QUALITY ASSURANCE OPTIONS Available until 5/31/18 New youth livestock quality assurance program IMPORTANT UPDATES Youth PQA Plus Discontinuing The National Pork Board will be discontinuing their Youth PQA Plus program on May 31, After this date, Youth PQA Plus will no longer be available as an option for young people seeking quality assurance training. This means that youth will not be able to certify or re-certify through Youth PQA Plus after May 31, 2018, and the National Pork Board will cease to issue youth certification numbers. However, the National Pork Board will honor Youth PQA certifications until they expire, including youth who earn multi-year certification by "testing out". So, youth who plan to nominate swine for the Kansas State Fair or KJLS are HIGHLY encouraged to complete their Youth PQA training by the end of May. The State Fair and KJLS will accept certification from either program. Youth who need quality assurance certification after the end of May will need to use the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program. This is the new, national, multi-species youth quality assurance program the National Pork Board will be transitioning their youth participants to in the future. Contact your local Extension Office for more information on quality assurance training options available in your area. Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a new, national, multi-species livestock quality assurance program available for youth ages This annual educational and certification program focuses on food safety, animal well-being, and life skill development for youth producing and/or showing livestock. The species included in the training are swine, beef cattle, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, market rabbits, and poultry. Extension specialists, the National Pork Board, national show organizers, and animal industry representatives were involved in designing the program with the intent to provide a national, standardized livestock quality assurance program applicable to multiple species. The curriculum is designed to provide different age-appropriate modules annually, so youth will expand their knowledge by covering new topics every year. There are two options by which youth may obtain their YQCA certification; they may attend a 60-minute face-to-face training with a certified instructor for $3/child, or they may complete the age-appropriate online certification course for $12/child. Families may use their 4HOnline credentials on the YQCA website to create an account, which will allow them register for a face-to-face training, or complete the online certification. There is also an option to create an independent account for FFA members. Families who participate in the state shows are encouraged to become familiar with the YQCA program, as it will be required for all Kansas State Fair and KJLS exhibitors beginning in
6 SAVE THE DATE! May 1 Market Beef Nominations Due June 15 Commercial Heifer, Swine, Sheep, & Meat Goat Nominations Due Nomination Page QR Code 2018 Nomination Information & Updates The 2018 state livestock nomination season has arrived! The current materials have been released and are posted on the website under Nomination Information. To be eligible to exhibit in the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive or at KJLS, market animals and commercial females must be formally nominated. The exception is meat goats; there is not a registered breeding doe division at either show, so all meat goats must be nominated to be shown. The major changes to the process this year are verbiage modifications on the forms and commercial heifers no longer have to be tattooed. Below is a brief overview of the process. New families are highly encouraged to visit their local extension office and refer to the Rookie Guide for further information and specific details. All animals that are nominated for the Kansas State Fair and/or KJLS are required to be tagged with a Kansas 4-H eid tag. DNA hair samples are required for all nominated animals and must be submitted in an official DNA envelope. The signatures of all exhibitors within the family and a parent/guardian are required on the DNA envelope Declaration and Specie Nomination Forms must be used. Kansas practices family nominations, so all paperwork needs to be signed by ALL eligible exhibitors within a family, a parent/guardian, and an extension agent (4-H) or ag advisor (FFA). The nomination fee of $8.00/animal must be submitted with nomination materials. Continuing in 2018, all swine nominations are required to include ear notches, and sheep and goats must submit full scrapie tag numbers. Exhibitors will need to contact their local Extension Office to get their animals tagged and obtain DNA envelopes. Only County Extension Agents and FFA Advisors have the organizational authority sign nomination paperwork. Deadlines are postmark deadlines, which are strictly enforced. No late nominations will be accepted. Nomination is NOT entry. After the nomination process is complete, families must officially enter the show in which they would like to participate! Deadlines May 1 - Market Beef Nominations DUE (market steers and market heifers) June 15 - Swine, Sheep, Meat Goat, and Commercial Heifer Nominations DUE * Nomination information, forms, checklists, and the Rookie Guide may be found on the website: 6
