The endowment created by longtime San Fernando Valley residents Mary and Jack Bayramian who passed away in November 2002 and January 2005, respectively will fund two major new university scholarship programs, including a $2.3 million portion to launch student scholarships for the future Valley Performing Arts Center project on the campus. This remarkable gift from Mary and Jack Bayramian will empower the university to support outstanding students, said Cal State Northridge President Jolene Koester. The Bayramians, who were devoted to each other during more than 60 years of marriage, now have extended that caring to improve the lives of hundreds of our students. To honor the gift, the California State University Board of Trustees in July approved renaming the university s Student Services Building as Bayramian Gift from Jack and Mary Bayramian will fund major CSUN scholarship programs. Hall. President Koester called the dedication a fitting tribute, because the building houses the university s scholarship, financial aid and other student support services offices. The president and members of the campus community will gather at the Student Services building at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, for the official dedication ceremony for Bayramian Hall and the creation of the Bayramian Family Scholarship Fund. A reception in celebration of the Bayramians generosity and vision will follow. Because Aunt Mary graduated from Cal State Northridge, she had a great feeling for the university, said Don Barsumian, Mary Bayramian s nephew, who is the couple s trustee. I think she had a real love for young people and for education. Mary believed in education and she wanted to help. This was her way of helping, Barsumian said. Mary and Jack Bayramian each had Armenian parents from Aintab, Turkey, who came to the United States to escape persecution. The two lived near each other as teenagers and graduated together from Hamilton High School in West Los Angeles in 1939, marrying in After Navy service during World War II, Jack had a 20-year career as a Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. technician. After the war, the couple first lived in Reseda and later bought a Northridge house several blocks west of today s university campus. A homemaker who returned to college in her late 30s, Mary Bayramian attended from 1960 to 1963, earning a bachelor s degree in art and a teaching credential from San Fernando Valley State College, which later became Cal State Northridge. After graduating, Mary Bayramian went on to teach art at nearby San Fernando High School, where she was affectionately known as Mrs. B, until the couple retired in At age 50, they moved to Laguna Beach in Orange County and lived Bayramians continued on page 2. Commitment to Students at Heart of Convocation Address President Koester Discusses Efforts Reflecting University s Mission to Serve Students Well Cal State Northridge s commitment to student learning and student achievement formed the centerpiece of President Jolene Koester s sixth convocation address, delivered August 25 to a large campus audience on the Oviatt Library lawn. Today I am going to ask you to envision the future of our university through the eyes of our students past, present and future, President Koester told the assembly. Rather than introduce any major new initiatives, the president said she wished to ask faculty and staff to embrace and build upon the efforts currently underway that reflect the university community s shared belief in the collective responsibility for student success. Some of these ongoing efforts include: The Faculty Senate recently completed its year long study of CSUN s General Education (GE) program, led by the GE Task Force under chair Jennifer Matos, professor of biology. Determined to improve the graduation rates of CSUN students, the university is moving to implement the Senate s recommended improvements, designed to reduce the GE program s complexity and number of required units. An effort to ensure that campus offices provide students with consistent and accurate information about CSUN policies and requirements. The commitment to make CSUN s written communications with its students clear, integrated, consistent, and free of technical language. Communications to students must be timed and sequenced in a way that makes sense to them, the president said. A project-in-progress being headed by University Assessment Coordinator Marilyn Filbeck and the Academic Affairs Assessment Committee that establishes program-level learning outcomes. A partnership between Academic Affairs and Student Affairs to make CSUN an institution firmly grounded in higher education s new concepts and expectations. Learning-Centered University grants are supporting numerous projects creating new ways to design, assess and evaluate student learning. President Koester noted that a change in individual expectations of students and a renewed commitment to be more helpful to them requires no initiative, task force or committees Nordhoff Street, Northridge, California I am calling upon you to act on the belief that our students can succeed when we set high expectations, and that it is our responsibility to help them do so, she said. Turning to budget matters, the president reported tangible positives President s Convocation continued on page 2.

2 Cal State Northridge s Founding President Dies at 97 Ralph Prator s Ten Years as Leader of San Fernando Valley State College Capped Eventful Career Longtime college administrator Ralph Prator the founding president of the institution that became California State University, Northridge, now one of California s largest public universities died Monday, July 25, in his Ventura County retirement hometown of Camarillo. Prator was 97. A lifelong athlete and avid golfer who briefly played baseball as a young man with pitching great Dizzy Dean, Prator amassed a 30-year career as a college and university administrator. That was capped by Prator s 10 years as president of San Fernando Valley State College from its founding in July 1958 until his retirement in September In 1972, the college became a university and was renamed California State University, Northridge. During that first decade of explosive growth in the San Fernando Valley, Prator oversaw the construction of the campus original core of permanent buildings (most of which remain today), quadrupled the college s 3,500 original students to more than 16,000 by his retirement, and spearheaded major land acquisitions that assembled most of today s 356-acre university campus. Prior to that, Prator had served eight years as president of Bakersfield College in Kern County from 1950 to 1958, similarly helping that college President Jolene Koester with Ralph Prator, CSUN s founding president develop a new campus. Recalling his retirement from San Fernando Valley State in later years, Prator once said, I felt as an administrator I was best able to start and push something to its maximum possibilities. But to settle down and run it was not my cup of tea. After retiring, Prator became a professor emeritus in what became Cal State Northridge s Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and later was named President Emeritus. Cal State Northridge would not be the strong institution it is today without Ralph Prator s leadership and vision. As the founding president, he gave us a solid foundation upon which to build the university s excellence, Photo by Lee Choo Koester said. Born of a ranching family in La Veta, Colorado on Nov. 16, 1907, Prator attended the University of Colorado, earning a bachelor s degree in history in 1929 and a master s in the same field in After serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945, Prator earned his doctorate in educational administration from the University of California at Berkeley in His tenure at San Fernando Valley State, which became the only fouryear public college and later university in its region, included recruiting most of the faculty hired in the early years and setting the academic direction for the institution. Prator is survived by his sister Elizabeth Bryan in Oklahoma; three adult children: eldest Bruce in Oregon, Lewis in Fountain Valley and Roxanna (Prator) Gottsacker, a CSUN education alumna, in New Hampshire, and four adult grandchildren. Prator s wife of nearly 60 years, Lois, who was a schoolteacher, died in In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to the CSUN University Women s Club Lois and Ralph Prator Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made payable to the Cal State Northridge Foundation, Nordhoff St., Northridge, CA Bayramians continued from page 1. there another 30 years, investing, improving and managing real estate, and settling in an ocean-front home. The Bayramians led an extraordinarily active life. Mary was an active cook and author of published cookbooks, designed and created her own jewelry, painted and played golf well into her 70s. Barsumian described Jack as the unofficial greeter of Laguna Beach and a firecracker who in his younger years was an avid handyman skilled in electrical, carpentry and concrete work. The couple s $7.3 million endowment will create the Bayramian Family Scholarship Fund at Cal State Northridge and support two major new programs. The earnings from $5 million of the endowment will fund the newly named Mary and Jack Bayramian Presidential Scholars and related scholarships within the university s premier Northridge Scholars Program. The Bayramian Presidential Scholar The Bayramians on their wedding day in 1942 awards, the most prestigious granted by the university, will ultimately go each year to two dozen or more highachieving upper-division students through a competitive process. Recipients will partner with faculty members on scholarly projects. The scholarships include a $5,000 award, bookstore discount, priority registration and other perks. Earnings from the other $2.3 million will fund Mary Bayramian Arts Scholars and become the largest gift yet toward Imagine the Arts, the fundraising campaign for the 1,600-seat Valley Performing Arts Center planned for the campus. These scholarships will support upper division and graduate students involved in the project through their courses, internships or related activities. Mary Bayramian was an art student at Cal State Northridge, an arts teacher at San Fernando High School, and an artist herself, said Judy C. Knudson, CSUN s vice president for university advancement. She was deeply engaged in the arts, and especially in opening the world of art to others, a goal that will be advanced by the Performing Arts Center project. CSUN in July launched the campaign for private funds to match the state dollars that will build/operate the Valley Performing Arts Center, due to open within the next five years. Planned as a signature facility, the center will be the largest venue of its kind in the San Fernando Valley and open the region to high-caliber performances not currently able to perform there. The university learned only recently that the couple had given CSUN s largest-ever cash gift after the husband s passing in January The university s prior largest cash gift came from The Eisner Foundation in 2002 when Disney CEO Michael D. Eisner and his wife Jane gave $7 million to create a new teacher-training program at the campus. Lili Vidal, the associate director of CSUN s Financial Aid and Scholarship Department, said the Bayramians gift will provide a major boost to the university s scholarship programs, which last year aided about 1,600 CSUN students based on their talent and achievements. President s Convocation continued from page 1. for , including eligibility for salary increases from a 3.5 percent compensation pool and marginal cost funding for a budgeted increase of 590 full time equivalent student (FTES) enrollment. In addition, Provost Harry Hellenbrand has approved the recruitment of 35 new faculty for , and the President allocated an additional $1 million from the budget reserve to support hiring 12 new faculty members for the same period. While the faculty searches are underway, the $1 million will be used this year to update campus lab computers and to add about 20 smart classrooms. The president also announced that ground will be broken in late 2006 on Phase I of a North Campus development project to include about 250 faculty/staff for-sale and rental dwelling units. During the next 10 years, the campus also plans to increase student housing by 2,000 beds, nearly doubling the number of students living on campus. Noting the university s success in fundraising and establishing new endowed chairs, the president announced that last July 1, the silent phase of the Imagine the Arts Campaign was launched in support of the 30-year old dream of campus and community visionaries for a world-class performing arts center at CSUN for the San Fernando Valley and region at large. 3 New Campus Parking Structure is Open for Business Students Gain 2,000-Plus Spaces in Second New Structure Built During Past Three Years Cal State Northridge s second new parking structure in the past three years is open for business. A 2,063-space facility that will help make CSUN a more user-friendly campus, the project just south of University Hall produces a net parking increase for the campus of about 1,350 spaces. President Jolene Koester and Mo Qayoumi, vice president for administration and finance and CFO, will welcome faculty, staff and students to the official grand opening at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the structure s entrance on Prairie Street and Etiwanda Avenue/West University Drive. Leading the ribbon-cutting for the structure most of whose spaces are dedicated for student use will be Associated Students President Chad Charton and Vice President Safa Sajadi. The addition of new parking spaces will mean a lot to our students, said Vice President Qayoumi. We ve been working hard to make access to a CSUN education as convenient as possible for them. The B3 Parking Structure, south of University Hall ARB Construction began work on the $18 million project, named the B3 Parking Structure, on March 1, The bulk of its 2,000-plus spaces are for students, but the facility also offers 160 spaces for employees and 53 for campus users with disabilities. An additional 165 spaces are available in the adjacent uncovered parking lot, 159 of them for students and six designated for disabled users. The new structure, whose two elevators are aligned with Sierra Walk on its east side, has five levels on its Photos by Mario Contini north side and six on the south. It also features five stairways, a pleasant palette of exterior colors, fluorescent lighting and fresh landscaping. Permits required for the structure include EB ( employee both ) permits for employees and all student permits except for NC (North Campus), according to Captain Fred Fernandez, Parking and Transportation Division, Public Safety Department. For the uncovered lot, ES (employee surface), EB and all student permits except for NC permits are necessary. As the university does not receive state funds to provide surface parking or parking structure improvements, funding for the project came from parking permit revenues from students and specified campus employee groups, under increased rates that took effect in Colin Donahue, director of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction, said the new facility s design incorporates the latest technologies for earthquake safety. Dick Dull and Janet Lucas Accept New Roles at CSUN Dull to Spearhead Fundraising for Key Athletic Venues; Janet Lucas Named Interim Athletic Director Dick Dull has accepted a new position to spearhead private fundraising for improvements to key campus athletic venues. After six years as athletic director, Dull on August 1 became the university s executive director of development for athletic facilities. Cal State Northridge has an excellent athletic program and I am proud of our accomplishments, including our move to the Big West Conference in mid 2001, said Dull. But to enable this department to reach its full potential, we need to enlist significant private financial support for upgrading our campus athletic facilities. Janet Lucas, the program s senior associate athletic director/senior woman administrator, will serve as interim athletic director pending completion of a national search. Lucas is former intercollegiate sports administrator at James Madison University in Virginia, where she oversaw the intercollegiate sports programs and coaching staff for up to 21 programs. In recent months, Dull and other campus officials have crafted a more Dick Dull than $10 million package of priority athletic facility improvements that will require private funding. Those include $6 million to more than double seating in the Matadome to 3,000 seats and other upgrades, $2.6 million to enhance and add 2,000 permanent seats for CSUN s soccer venue, and other improvements to CSUN s baseball venue. Janet Lucas In his new position, Dull will report to Vice President for University Advancement Judy C. Knudson. I am so pleased to have Dick Dull spearhead this important athletics fundraising initiative, Knudson said. This will greatly enhance our ability to support the needs of athletics and move the entire program forward. Starting in September, the university will launch an overall review of its athletics program by a soon-to-beformed blue ribbon commission. It will review the athletic program s organization, resources and focus, and help the department prepare a roadmap for the coming five years. Vice President for Administration and Finance Mo Qayoumi, whose area includes the university s athletics program, said CSUN must be aggressive and creative in finding funding for athletics. We hope to position athletics as a more central presence in the culture of the campus and our region, he said. The commission is slated to submit recommendations to President Jolene Koester by the end of In early 2006, the university expects to launch a nationwide search for a new athletic director. In August, Lucas announced the appointment of Staci Schulz as head women s basketball coach. Schulz has been the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at CSUN for the past three seasons. The athletics program also has added Kevin Zihlman as director of compliance. President Koester to Repeat as Big West Conference Leader Reappointment Comes at Pivotal Time for Athletics Conference President Jolene Koester in August was reappointed chair of the Big West Conference, a rare honor that comes during a pivotal time for the athletics conference as it makes a transition from multi-state to single-state membership. The president will lead the conference in its first year as a conference whose membership is composed solely of California universities, including Northridge, Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and the University of the Pacific. I am pleased to be chairing the board of directors during this pivotal time in the conference s history, said President Koester, whose second term will continue through June 30, As chair, the president is responsible for facilitating meetings of the board, composed of the presidents and chancellors of member universities. She appoints committees and subcommittees and works with the Big West commissioner to set the conference agenda. The board directs conference policy, ratifies conference legislation, provides strategic planning and develops the conference position on national issues, among other responsibilities. The Big West Conference is a Division I National Collegiate Athletics Association entity whose members compete in 17 sports. August 29, California State University, Northridge 3

Hill and McInnis, selected by the council for the quality of their academic performances and their interest in Chinese culture, will study at the Central Academy of Theatre Arts in Beijing. Hill will study directing and McInnis will pursue performance arts at the academy, among the top theatre performing arts institutions in China and the alma mater of Zhang Ziyi, the Oscar-winning actress from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. In Brief Patric McInnis and Sean Hill, CSUN drama students, will study this year at the Central Academy of Theatre Arts in Beijing, China. Both students will serve as ambassadors of friendship for CSUN and for the United States. The goal of the scholarship is to further promote exchange, friendship, understanding and collaboration between the U.S. and China, said Justine Su, director of CSUN s China Institute. Hill hopes to master the art of theatre from Western and Eastern perspectives, and to gain a better understanding of the Chinese culture, traditions and people. While enhancing my appreciation for theatre and its skills and knowledge, Hill said, I hope to bring back to the United States a unique and new perspective I will be able to utilize further down the road. McInnis views the scholarship as an avenue to explore Buddhism and his interest in martial arts, while developing his performance skills by learning the ideals of Chinese actors. CSUN s extensive ties to China through the university s China Institute have positioned Northridge students as front-runners for the Los Angelesbased Chinese Consulate General scholarships. The two new scholarships bring to seven the number of years in a row that Cal State Northridge students have won Chinese Government Scholarship Council awards. Director of CSUN s Center for Community Service-Learning, Dercle has been an advocate of community-based learning and civic engagement. PPM and Kinesiology Win Governor s Safety Award An employee wellness project initiated by Physical Plant Management (PPM) and the Department of Kinesiology has won the Governor s Safety Award. Seventeen of the 23 PPM stretch leaders involved in the PPM Wellness Program Stretch Leaders project attended the August 26 awards ceremony at CSU Sacramento. Presented by the Department of General Services Office of Insurance and Risk Management, the award recognized the efforts of PPM stretch leaders to strengthen safe ergonomic practices, enhancing the well being of CSUN employees. The project was conceived and implemented by PPM Director Tom Brown; kinesiology professor Steven Loy; PPM project coordinator Margaret Steiner; Benjamin Elisondo, PPM manager of operations, safety and training; and a cadre of Kinesiology Department students in the College of Health and Human Development. I believe the program is a valuable demonstration of the synergy we can develop with an on-campus wellness program, said Loy, stressing that students helped design and run the program, which will be further developed and introduced to the entire faculty and staff in fall In the ongoing program, stretch leaders lead their work peers in ten minutes of stretching exercises at the start of each work day. Graduate student Shilo Nelson, who trained the leaders, follows up to make sure the exercises are properly led and executed. Each PPM employee group selected its own stretch leader and alternate, said Steiner, who currently is seeking 20 portable radio/cd players to provide music for the exercises. We are all excited about the way this program is going, she said. Brown, a confirmed cyclist and fitness advocate who encourages managers and staff to bike to and from campus work sites, agreed. Healthier, happier employees are more productive and less prone to accidents, injuries and associated lost work time, he said. Just as important, they develop a sense of belonging within the department and within their respective work groups. For more information on the Stretch Leaders program, call contact Steiner at margaret.steiner@csun.edu or (818) California State University, August 29, 2005
