2 Welcome/Invitation On behalf of the University of Cincinnati and the Air Force Research Laboratory we welcome you to the University of Cincinnati and the 2014 Nanotechnology Materials and Devices (NMD) Workshop. It is an honor that we at the University of Cincinnati are able to host such an exemplary conference in the evolving field of carbon nanotechnology and its industrialization. We are also very proud to be presenting a lineup of distinguished speakers who will be traveling across the United States and from around the world to describe their latest nanotechnology research. The University of Cincinnati, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and University of Dayton Research Institute welcome you to the 2014 workshop. There will be a networking dinner Monday evening held at the Tangeman Center, Great Hall at a cost of $35 payable prior to the workshop. A tour of the General Electric Learning Center in Evendale is planned for Tuesday afternoon at the conclusion of the workshop. This guidebook contains a wealth of information about the workshop, and also lists information on the University of Cincinnati. 3 I. Overview Workshop Summary This intensive single track workshop consists of invited talks and laboratory tours. The workshop covers the synthesis, functionalization, characterization, modeling, post processing, and application of carbon nanostructured materials and devices. The goal of the workshop is to benchmark the current state of the art and develop plans to make breakthroughs in engineering materials and devices based on nanotechnology. The electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes and spun thread are of particular interest. Applications of nanotechnology and industry needs will be discussed along with strategies for commercializing nanotechnology. The workshop will provide opportunities to establish cooperative research and to intersect different ideas in order to break down barriers in nanotechnology. There is no individual registration fee. Registration as a sponsor of the workshop is $500 and provides an advertisement in the workshop proceedings and advertisement at the workshop. We ask that no confidential information be presented at the workshop. There is no taping or recording of the presentations. To register for the workshop, please complete the online registration form or register in person at the workshop. 4 Location The conference will be held on the west campus of the University of Cincinnati in the Tangeman University Center, in the Great Hall (see photo on right), located on the fourth floor of the building. Recommend parking locations are the Green Garage, Woodside Garage, or Corry Garage. The parking fee is ten dollars and should be paid by the participants. For those who would prefer to arrive the night before the workshop, the recommend hotel is the Kingsgate Conference Center Marriott located on the east (medical) campus of the University of Cincinnati. The Marriot will reserve rooms for conference attendees at a reduced rate. Please see later sections of this guidebook for more detailed information. Posters Attendees interested in displaying a poster may do so without charge. Posters should have a backing, be self-standing and must be set up before the conference begins. Posters will be placed on display in the back of the conference hall. Those who wish to display a poster must note so on their registration form so a poster stand can be provided. Fliers and advertising material may be displayed by registering as a sponsor. Proceedings Workshop proceedings containing powerpoint presentations and photographs from the workshop will be published electronically. The powerpoint presentations will consist of full or abbreviated versions of all talks, absent of confidential information. The proceedings will be available at no charge to attendees and to nonattendees for a small charge. The proceedings are expected to be published in late March. At that time an will be sent to all attendees with instructions on how to download the proceedings. 5 Workshop Organizers The Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop is organized by the University of Dayton Research Institute and the University of Cincinnati in collaboration with the United States Air Force Research Laboratory. Talks When planning a conference there are more people interested in giving presentations than can be accommodated. Thus each year different speakers are invited to give presentations. All talks will be twenty minutes, plus five minutes for questions and five minutes for speaker setup (totaling thirty minutes per talk). In order to keep the conference on schedule, we ask everyone s cooperation in adhering to the time schedule. A podium, microphone, laptop computer, and stage with large screen are used for the talks (see photo at right from previous workshop). All lectures will be invited and there will be no keynote lectures in order to have more speakers. Industry and University Sponsorships The Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop is a unique intensive meeting to present state-of-the-art research in the field of nanotechnology and promote cooperatively translating nanotechnology discoveries into applications. At the workshop, attendees will view a panorama of unique presentations and learn the latest advances in nanotechnology theory and application from experts in the field. Between sessions there will be several opportunities to meet and network with engineering experts, faculty members, and industry executives from universities and nanotechnology companies across the globe. The workshop will highlight advances in nanotube materials such as forests, ribbons, sheets, thread, and yarn for applications including aerospace, bioengineering, electronics, energy and power, renewable energies, as well as several other industries. Industries, universities, publishers, and government agencies can partially sponsor the Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop for $500. Sponsors will have the following benefits: a) A table in the Great Hall (where the workshop is held) for display of products and for distributing fliers and advertising materials b) Display of a poster at the workshop c) A one page sponsor advertisement in ppt format in the workshop proceedings d) Networking and Recruiting. Undergraduate and Graduate students and industry professionals will be at the workshop for interactions with industry e) Industries will each give a 4 minute presentation (using 2-3 ppt slides or similar) to attendees on the first day of the workshop on recent advances in their products and services related to nanotechnology. To register as a sponsor, please complete the online registration form or register in person at the workshop. Sponsors should also a one slide powerpoint presentation to Dr. Vesselin Shanov, Conference Co-Chairman, at vesselin.shanov@uc.edu, for inclusion in the workshop proceedings. The Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop is held for academic purposes and is not for profit. Sponsorships are only used to cover part of the costs of running the workshop. Because of sponsorships, we are able to keep the workshop free of charge and open to the public. Industry Tour This year there will be a special event tour of the General Electric Aircraft Engine (GEAE) learning center located in Evendale, Ohio on Tuesday afternoon at the conclusion of the workshop. The tour is sponsored by Jan Schilling of GE aviation. Jan Schilling is the Advanced Products Chief Engineer of GE Aviation. Schilling joined GE in 1969 as part of the Technical Development Program after graduating with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology. He also holds a MS degree in Aerospace Engineering from UC. He has held numerous engineering leadership roles within GE s Engineering division. Prior to becoming Chief Engineer, he led the technical team that brought the GE90-115B the world s most powerful engine through the design, development and certification process. Schilling served as Chief Engineer and General Manager for GE Aviation from 2003 to 2011 where he was responsible for ensuring the safety of all GE Aviation products, leading the technical integrity of the Engineering division and defining and driving Engineering process initiatives. In 2013, Schilling was elected to the National Academy of Engineers Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop Guidebook Page 7
8 V. Hotel Reservations The Nanotechnology Materials and Devices Workshop is held on the West Campus of the University of Cincinnati in the Tangeman University Center this year. The closest hotels to the workshop are the Marriott Kingsgate Conference Center on the East Campus of the University of Cincinnati, and the Hampton Inn, located across the street from the Marriott (see hotel map below). To travel from the hotels to the conference hall, workshop attendees can either walk or take the university shuttle bus. A free shuttle bus runs every fifteen minutes from the Marriott Hotel to the West Campus of the university (7 AM to 7 PM). The distance between the hotels and the conference hall is about ½ mile. Please see the following page for hotel options. *Note: The shuttle bus does not stop at the Hampton Inn Hotel, only the Marriott. 9 Staying at the Marriott Kingsgate Conference Center Hotel For those who are planning to arrive the night before the workshop, the Marriott is holding a room block on February 23, 24, and 25, The group rate for the workshop is $149 per night (regular rate is $199.00). The last day for making reservations at the discounted rate is Sun. Feb. 2, Any rooms remaining in the block after that date will be released for general sale. They are offering their room rate of $ per night. To take advantage of this reduced rate, you must make a telephone reservation. Ask for Mary and inform the receptionist that you would like the special rate because you are visiting on university business. Then inform the receptionist that you are visiting the College of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Department for a workshop. This must be done over the telephone. Online reservations do not qualify. To make a reservation, use the telephone number listed below. The Hampton is a little closer to UC than the Marriott Hotel. 10 VI. Maps and Directions Directions to campus The following map shows the university campus relative to the surrounding major highways. The Nanotechnology Workshop is held on the west campus. From the north via I-71 From I-71 south, take the Taft Road exit (exit 3). The exit places you on Taft Road, a one-way street heading west. Taft Road becomes Calhoun Street as you near campus. To East Campus (Medical Center) Turn right on Jefferson Avenue. Follow Jefferson until it crosses Martin Luther King Drive. At MLK Drive, Jefferson Avenue becomes Vine Street. From the north or south via I-75 From I-75, take the Hopple Street exit (exit 3). (If you are traveling north, Hopple Street exits from the left lane) Turn left off the exit on to Hopple Street. As you cross the first intersection (Central Parkway), Hopple Street becomes Martin Luther King Drive. Follow Martin Luther King Drive up the hill to Clifton Avenue. to West Campus ML King Drive borders the north edge of the West Campus. Clifton Avenue borders the west edge of the West Campus. To East Campus (Medical Center) To get to the East Campus, follow King to Vine Street. Turn left onto Vine, then turn right at Goodman Avenue. From the west via I-74 Take I-74 east to I-75 south. Take the Hopple Street exit (Exit 3). Turn left off the exit on to Hopple Street. As you cross the first intersection (Central Parkway), Hopple Street becomes Martin Luther King Drive. Stay on I-75 after you cross the Ohio River. From the left lane on I-75, take the Hopple Street exit (Exit 3). Turn left off the exit on to Hopple Street. As you cross the first intersection (Central Parkway), Hopple Street becomes Martin Luther King Drive. Follow Martin Luther King Drive up the hill to Clifton Avenue.
