1 VÜtyàÉÇ [ ÄÄá VÉÄÄxzx President s Report to the Board Gloria Macias Harrison August 13, 2009 (To read more about these items, please see the News link at the CHC website: EMERGENCY TRAINING CENTER ATTENDS PUBLIC SAFETY WEEK ACTIVITIES IN HIGHLAND The week of July 13 th the City of Highland celebrated Public Safety Week. The San Bernardino Regional Emergency Training Center attended an appreciation lunch at Fire Station #2. XTREME SUMMER DAY CAMP 09 During July, Crafton Hills College participated in a joint program with Colton Redlands Yucaipa ROP to provide a week of Xtreme Summer Day Camp for three groups of about 20 students each. The Camp s targeted 7 th and 8 th grade students with a focus on Science fields and encouraging them to plan for college attendance. Thursdays were Crafton Days. In the morning they participated in some field geology work in Mentone wash under the instruction of Professor Rich Hughes. They took rock samples and did some basic statistical analysis of the unique types of rocks found here. They also stood directly on the San Andreas fault and learned what really happens during The Big One. After having lunch at the Crafton Hills Cafeteria and a short campus tour they participated in three biology

2 labs lead by Anil Kapoor to determine the spread and tracing of a mock virus, a CSI investigation and some genetic investigations. This program was funded by the SB70 San Bernardino Valley Consortium Grant. The camp was a great success and CHC hopes to collaborate again next year if funding is available. 71 ST PARAMEDIC CLASS GRADUATES Twenty-three students received Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic Certificates at the Crafton Hills College (CHC) 71 st Paramedic graduation ceremony on July 9, The graduates were required to complete a comprehensive 1,200-hour course teaching emergency medical care, including learning skills to handle trauma situations, cardiac problems, respiratory problems, delivering babies, emergency care for children and clinical and field externships. 3 Special Paramedic Awards Cardiology - Ryan Jameson Pharmacology - Miguel Cervantes Theory - Ryan Jameson Skills - Trina Mancha and David Lopez Clinical - Benjamin Mestas Field - Steve Sands Director s Award - Jennifer Gardner 2009 RESA PROVIDES HANDS-ON TRAINING FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES CAREERS Twenty-four high school graduates from Redlands attended the Redlands Emergency Services Academy (RESA) this July. To learn more about the law enforcement and firefighting professions the classroom and hands-on training included forensics, community service ladder training, defensive tactics, physical training, repelling, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) training, fire rescue, active shooter, wild hose, felony traffic stop, burn house and a trip to the San Bernardino County Sheriff s Academy. RESA is a partnership comprised of the CHC public safety programs, the Redlands Unified School District, the University of Redlands, the Redlands Police Department and Redlands Fire Departments. James Ramos, Gloria Harrison At the closing dinner ceremonies, San Manuel Tribal Chairperson James Ramos accepted a plaque from CHC President Gloria Macias Harrison for the generous contribution of $150,000 from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, to the CHC College Foundation to continue the RESA program. Many RESA graduates will be at CHC taking classes this fall to pursue a career in emergency services. VOLUNTEERS TO STAFF ANSWER CENTERS The Answer Centers for Fall 2009 help channel students to: 1. Where they need to go; or 2. Where they can get their questions answered most efficiently. The Answer Centers will be staffed from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. for the first two days of week of the Fall 2009 Semester specifically, Monday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 18 with an abbreviated afternoon session from 4:30-7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, August 19. As before, there will be a total of 4 Answer Centers located at the following places: The Bookstore Quad The LADM breezeway The Library Quad The egress point for the B and C parking lots Faculty and staff will volunteer to fill 232 time slots to assist students CHC VISIBLE IN THE COMMUNITY Bus stop posters, KVCR radio spots and a booth at the Redlands Market night provided information on CHC.
