Cosmetology students move into state-of-the-art Studio 75

Cosmetology students move into state-of-the-art Studio 75 Students in the McKenzie Center s Cosmetology program are excited to be working in the newly constructed Studio 75 Salon. Services at Salon 75 include hairstyling, hair color and perms, skin and nail care. The salon is open daily for appointments. Three students competed in SkillsUSA, a competition for all CTE programs where students compete at the Regional, State and National levels. The students were Tess Stader, esthetics, and Pamela Guzman and Grace Johnson, both nail care. 2 MCIT MESSENGER JANUARY, 2017 FEBRUARY 2017 JAG students excel in Career Development Competition MCIT JAG students competed in the Jobs for America s Graduates (JAG) Career Development Conference. The conference took place February 8 at the University of Indianapolis. The chapter events were completed at school and submitted on behalf of MCIT s JAG Career Association at the event. Our students did a great job and competed with 11 different schools and over 100 other JAG students in Marion County, said instructor Hope Lane. There were individual competitions as well as chapter competitions. They represented Lawrence Township proudly and professionally. RESULTS Individual Event Winners Jalen Deramus (LNHS, Senior) 1st Place Financial Literacy; Olivia Englebright (LCHS, Senior) 2nd Place Writing Skills (They will compete with other JAG students in over 100 schools around Indiana in the same events March 17 at Ivy Tech.) Ashli Trabue (LNHS, Junior) 3rd Place Entrepreneurship Plan Chapter Event Winners Chapter Marketing Brochure 3rd Place Ricky Tlatoa (LCHS, junior) and Gabrielle Edwards (LNHS, junior) were the creators of the chapter marketing brochure. Chapter Professionalism 3rd Place This was awarded to students in attendance at the CDC. Students were being judged on their professionalism, networking abilities, maturity, etc. outside of competition events. Our students did a great job in introducing themselves, meeting new people including judges from the community, employees of Employ Indy, JAG teachers across the city as well as other JAG students across the city, said Lane. 3 DECA students advance to State in team events Six DECA students advanced to State in team events. TEAM EVENTS: District competition was held on January 18 at Brownsburg Jennifer Sandoval and Deanda Rivera - Travel and Tourism High School. The State competition takes place March 5-7 at Jaelin Roseman and Sydney Huston - Buying and the Marriott, downtown Indianapolis. 4 MCIT MESSENGER JANUARY, 2017 FEBRUARY 2017 Health Science II students begin clinical experience, prepare for state test After preparing for work in the real-world, the students in Carolyn Gauen s Health Science II class have begun their clinical experiences. The students are working hard to complete their requirements for Certified Nursing Assistant preparation, said Gauen, and they will take the state test in May. Some students are following the Allied Health clinical track and are shadowing in a variety of healthcare settings. Swartz advances to SkillsUSA State in Collision Repair Kylee Swartz encompasses a can-do attitude and great work skills that enable her to perform at the top level of students in this field. She is an inspiration to other young women who are considering collision repair as a future career. Clarence McGowen, Collision Repair instructor CAP cadet heads to Washington, DC Cadet Senior Airman Kailee Jackson, a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadet with two years experience in the Titan Cadet Squadron at McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology, will be attending National Legislative Day in Washington D.C. in late February. She was chosen from the more than 500 cadets in Indiana squadrons to be one of the five cadets representing Indiana and the six-state Great Lakes Region of CAP. To qualify, cadets who had an interest in politics were asked to write a short essay explaining how Civil Air Patrol has been an influence on their life. Jackson wrote the prompt late last year and was informed of being selected in mid-january. Cadet Jackson says she is grateful to be given the opportunity and looks forward to welcoming new cadets to the program. CAP is the official civilian voluntary auxiliary of the United States Air Force, with more than 55,000 members across the country. CAP is charted by the United States Congress to provide emergency Services, Aerospace Education, and Cadet Programs to America s communities. -Frank Merrill, contributor

The robot is called a BEAM and allows mentors (or anyone who has a password) to roll the robot around and check up on our progress it was a donation from MTD.

7 Chinese Education Connection visits MCIT Members of the Chinese Education Connection group paid a visit to MCIT. The visitors were from several different schools and locations in Zhejiang Province, Indiana s sister state in the People s Republic of China. They were here to learn about the high school guidance departments. Hands-on learning for Human Body Systems Students in Amy Hinshaw's Human Body Systems got to touch real pig lungs and make them breathe. They then measured their own lung capacity.
