1 DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY UNIVERSITY OF DELHI Ph.D. Admission Notice: AUGUST-SEPTEMBER SESSION 2015 Applications for admission to Ph.D. Programme in Geography are invited on prescribed admission form so as to reach in the office of the, Delhi School of Economics,, Delhi on or before July 31, 2015 by 4.00 p.m. The Handbook of Information along with Admission form for Ph.D. Courses will be available from July 6, 2015 to July 31, 2015 from a.m. to 3.00 p.m. in the Office of the Chairperson, Board of Research Studies (Social Sciences), Faculty of Social Science Building,, Delhi The application should be complete in all respects and should be duly supported with fifteen copies of detailed research proposal duly forwarded by the Supervisor under whom the scholar proposes to carry out his/her research. The Departmental Research Committee will interview short listed candidates. The list of recommended candidates would be displayed on the Notice Board and website on 4 th August, The interview will be held on 10 th August, 2015 at 2.00 P.M. in the Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics,, Delhi ELIGIBILITY FOR PH.D. ADMISSION Directly Eligible for Interview: 1 (A) : Candidates with M.Phil. and Fellowship. (B) : Foreign students (except degree acquired in India) with their national or other fellowships recognized by the University or sponsored by their employers. (C) : Permanent University and College teachers in Geography of, having completed two years of service. ELIGIBLE FOR INTERVIEW AFTER SCREENING OF PROPOSALS: (D) : Candidates without M.Phil, but having Fellowship. (E) : Candidates without M.Phil and fellowship. Such candidates are eligible for University s Non-NET Fellowship, but number limited as per University rules. (F) : Temporary / Ad hoc / Guest teachers in Geography of or Permanent teachers / employees of other disciplines and/or from other recognized University / College / Research Institute in India, with minimum three years teaching / research experience. (G) : Candidates sponsored by their employers shall be considered only if they get study leave for a period of two years to fulfill residency requirements of the University of Delhi. In order to advance research in strategic areas of national concern, scientists / professionals working at defence and space institutions / organizations of the Government of India / State Government and with whom the University has signed a 1

2 MoU, will be allowed to pursue Ph.D. while working in their organizations provided that the DRC recommends that their work in their parent organization is relevant to their Ph.D. research. Such students may also be exempt from the requirement of course work under this Ordinance if recommended by the DRC. 2. To be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. Programme, a candidate must have obtained a Master s / M.Phil. degree of the, or any other recognized University, or any degree recognized as equivalent in the subject in which the candidate wishes to pursue a course of research, or in an allied subject. She / he must have obtained either a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent grading in the M.Phil. degree or a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grading in the Master s degree. 3. Students who were initially registered for the M.Phil. programme in the Department of Geography of the and who obtain a score of 60% or more marks in Part I examination of the M.Phil. programme would be eligible for admission to the doctoral programme without completing their M.Phil. degree on the specific recommendation of the Departmental Research Committee. Such students shall be granted fellowships as provided in 1B. 4. The provisional registration of the students done by the Department shall require ratification by the Board of Research Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences,. Selection Procedure Approved by Departmental Research Council (DRC) The DRC recommends candidates for admission to the Board of Research in the Social Sciences (BRSS). Final admission is only granted by the University and is in all cases provisional, until prescribed requirements, including course work, are met by candidates. Given the centrality of the research proposal, the admission to the Ph.D Programme will be based on evaluation of the research proposal and interview. A detailed research proposal with: Tentative Title, Name of proposed supervisor, Name of candidate must be submitted for review. The structure of the proposal is provided on the Dept. of Geography website. Fifteen copies of the proposal have to be submitted. The candidate is to write his/her name on cover page only and NOT as header/footer on each page. The last date for submission is 31 st July, 2015 to Office, Delhi School of Economics,. Candidates having M.Phil. with Fellowship will appear directly for interview. The proposal will be evaluated by a panel of 3 selected, on the basis of specialization in Environmental Studies, Physical Geography/Resource and Social and Human. Geography, to be decided by HOD. The panel of examiners would evaluate the proposal in terms of the acceptance or non acceptance of proposal. To ensure anonymity and fairness, the names of candidates and supervisors would be removed from the proposal and code numbers assigned. 2

3 To remove bias the 3 evaluators would not evaluate the proposal for which she/he is the prospective supervisor. The list of recommended candidates would be displayed on the Notice Board and Dept. of Geography website on 4 th August, th The interview will be held on 10 August, 2015 at 2.00 p.m. in the Department of Geography, Delhi School of Economics,, Delhi Only candidates recommended by two evaluators would be selected for interview. The DRC would conduct the interview, on the basis of defense of the proposal on the basis of which marks would be assigned. To remove bias the proposed supervisors present among the members of the DRC would not evaluate and give marks to their own prospective candidate in the interview.
