1 Arts Midwest Invests $64,175 in North Dakota For more than 25 years, Arts Midwest has been a strong partner with the North Dakota Council on the Arts. Together, we have provided enriching cultural opportunities to North Dakota artists, arts organizations, and audiences fostering and sustaining vibrant, diverse communities throughout the state. Economically, we serve to leverage North Dakota public funds to generate more private investment while providing broad public access to arts and cultural activities. In FY13, Arts Midwest is reporting a 430% return on investment to the state of North Dakota for services in the programming cycle. Through our performing and visual arts and leadership development programs, we have leveraged $14,912 in state dues to provide $64,175 in services. We are thrilled to report that these programs and services reached urban and rural communities across the state. 2 Arts Midwest Touring Fund Arts Midwest Touring Fund encourages performing arts touring by providing financial support to arts presenting organizations in the Midwest. Arts Midwest Touring Fund provides fee support up to $4,000 to performing arts organizations to bring dance, theater, and music to audiences across Arts Midwest s region. Each engagement includes in-depth educational activities and public performances, and aims to reach underserved audiences. Through the FY13 Arts Midwest Touring Fund cycle ( performance season), Arts Midwest awarded $14,175 to eight performing arts organizations in North Dakota. These activities included seven public performances and 29 community and educational events. 3 Arts Midwest World Fest Arts Midwest World Fest connects small and mid-sized Midwestern communities to world cultures through week-long residencies with global performers. Arts Midwest World Fest s mission is to instill appreciation for diversity and acceptance of other cultures. Over a two-year cycle, four global musical ensembles conduct week-long residencies in Midwestern communities. Residencies include public concerts, K-12 school workshops, and community outreach activities such as family and senior citizen workshops and master classes. The program is committed to reaching communities that lack access to high-quality international arts and education experiences. Arts Midwest invests approximately $100,000 to bring this program to North Dakota for the two-year cycle, and local communities are only responsible for school busing, hall rental, and hospitality costs. The Arts Midwest World Fest cycle featured Yamma Ensemble (Israel), Tarim: Uygur Song and Dance (People s Republic of China), Wust el Balad (Egypt), and Cudamani (Indonesia). [The Yamma Ensemble] got the kids involved and talking. The kids didn t even realize they were learning something. The night was a success just by the kids reaction. -Kimberly V. During their week-long stay in, the artists conducted 10 educational and performance events that reached more than 2,315 residents, including more than 1,850 youth. 6 Arts Midwest Conference The preeminent annual booking and education conference for the Midwest performing arts industry. The only meeting of its kind in the Midwest, our Conference attracts top presenters from across the United States and around the world. The goals of the Arts Midwest Conference are to connect arts administrators, foster and sustain the dynamic performing arts industry, and promote the vibrant local arts scene in the Conference city. In 2012, 905 arts professionals convened in Grand Rapids, Michigan from September to network, conduct business, engage in in-depth professional development sessions, experience live performance showcases, and gain new insights into the world of performing arts touring and presenting. Representatives from North Dakota included three individuals from three different arts organizations. The 2013 Arts Midwest Conference will take place September 9 12 in Austin, Texas and we expect to serve a broad sector of North Dakota artists, presenters, and arts organizations at the event. 7 Caravanserai: A place where cultures meet Encouraging understanding of Muslim cultures through immersive arts experiences in American communities. Launched in 2010, Caravanserai: A place where cultures meet is an international cultural exchange program that encourages understanding of diverse Muslim cultures through the presentation of immersive year-long arts experiences in U.S. communities. Based on the concept of the historical caravanserai a place where travelers exchanged stories, music, and culture after a long day s journey across the desert our modern-day caravanserai is designed to offer a new space to promote intercultural conversation and learning. The season of Caravanserai brought the arts and artists of Morocco to communities across the United States: Jamestown, ND; Grand Rapids, MN; Nashville, TN; and Fayetteville, AR. In the fall 2012 residency, the Jamestown Fine Arts Association welcomed the Majid Bekkas Gnawa Ensemble, with master oud player Brahim Fribgane. The musicians conducted 10 educational and community activities and gave three public performances in the community, reaching more than 1,600 individuals, including more than 730 youth. Jamestown also welcomed Moroccan-American filmmaker Hakim Belabbes in the fall, who conducted residency activities and film screenings, reaching a total audience of more than 260 community members. The spring 2013 residencies featured the Orchestra of Fes. Through 11 educational and community events and one public performance, these artists reached more than 1,000 community members, including 747 youth. 8 The Sum of Many Parts: 25 Quiltmakers from 21 st -Century America An exhibition of American quilts commissioned by the U.S. Embassy-Beijing, touring through China in Quiltmaking has always been an important tradition in America, and the many styles of American quilts reflect the diversity of the United States itself. The Sum of Many Parts features 25 contemporary quilters from the Midwest, the South, and Hawaii. Touring across China from , this exhibition highlights a range of quilting styles and techniques while providing an opportunity for Chinese audiences to connect with American culture through our shared love of textile arts. ArtsLab ArtsLab strengthens the impact of arts organizations in urban and rural communities through leadership and strategy development. We offer intensive training, mentorship, and technical assistance to cultural leaders to ensure that they have the skills, ideas, and mindsets needed to adapt and thrive in a world of continuous change. The cycle of ArtsLab is serving 15 arts organizations in the Twin Cities, greater Minnesota, and North Dakota. Administered by Arts Midwest, ArtsLab is sponsored by Bush Foundation, F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Mardag Foundation, The McKnight Foundation, and The Saint Paul Foundation. Leadership Twice annually, Arts Midwest convenes a summit of the state arts agency executive directors representing Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Through this effort, Jan Webb, the executive director of the North Dakota Council on the Arts, participates in leadership development and knowledge sharing with key professionals in the public art sector. North Dakota continues to be strongly represented on Arts Midwest s Board of Directors and governance committees through Jan Webb from Bismarck and Matthew Wallace from Grand Forks.
