3 The WHO identified Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs) as the leading cause of death, accounting for 2/3 of all deaths worldwide. These included cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and cancer. Global urbanization, sedentary lifestyle, and an increase in life expectancy, are projected to increase NCD burden worldwide.
4 Proportional Mortality (% of total deaths, all ages)* Communicable, maternal, perinatal and nutritional conditions 7% Injuries 9% Other NCDs 13% CVD 45% Diabetes 2% Respiratory diseases 5% Cancers 19% NCDs are estimated to account for 84% of all deaths * The mortality estimates for this country have a high degree of uncertainty because they are not based on any national NCD mortality data. The estimates are based on a combination of country life tables, policy/programme/action plan cause of death models, regional cause of death patterns, and WHO and UNAIDS program estimates for some major causes of death (not including NCDs). World Health Organization - NCD Country Profiles, 2011
5 SHARP Mission To provide superior didactic education complemented with state-of-the-art interactive and practical training in health research, with a focus on non-communicable diseases research. It is intended for physicians and other health care professionals, to improve and advance the health care agenda for non-communicable diseases in Lebanon and the region.
