Program Comments by President Richard Davenport 5 May 2005 Dear Retirees: I wish to express to you on behalf of the Minnesota State University, Mankato community our appreciation for your many years of dedicated service to this University. I am particularly thankful for all of your roles in promoting a successful student-oriented learning environment. I extend my personal appreciation for your valuable years of service and wish you well as you begin new directions. I hope that you will remember fondly your many MSU friends and remain in contact with your University. It has been a pleasure to work with people who care so much. 3 2005 Retiring Faculty and Staff David Abel Dave has been a faculty member in Economics since During his time at MSU he enjoyed serving as department chair, serving as the local Faculty Association President, and serving as the statewide IFO President. After retirement he plans to travel and spend time enjoying his hobbies. Cecilia Berg Cis has been a faculty member in the Water Resources Center since She is retiring from her position as Director of the Center. While at MSU she enjoyed her teaching experiences with students and working with the Water Resources Center team. Her work with the Water Resources Center involved supporting undergraduate and graduate students as well as county environmental personnel in the greater regional community. One important personal achievement was making a difference in access to data through the creation of the Minnesota River Basin Data Center. After leaving MSU, Cis will be moving west and will continue to work in the field of natural resources. William Bernhagen Bill has worked at MSU since 1987 both as a development officer and most recently as a faculty member in the Urban and Regional Studies Institute. During his time at MSU he is most proud of the awards he received and his voluntary achievements that served students, including: SBS Advisor Recognition Award; Certificate of Appreciation, Student Ambassadors; Presidential Scholars Reviewer; Honors Committee; Service-Learning Award; Certificate of Recognition, Nontraditional Students; Outstanding Student Service Award; Claire Faust Community Service Award; Nonprofit Leadership Certificate Program Recognition; and being involved in the Undergraduate Research Program. He is also very proud of being involved in encouraging the development of University Square, which directly benefits students. After retirement Bill will continue his community involvement, travel, and pursuing further education. 1

4 Hope Cook Hope has been a faculty member in the Art Department since Her favorite experience while working at MSU has always been the amazing students that she had the pleasure of learning from over the years. After retirement, Hope will be opening The Bayfield Press and Gallery in her studio in Bayfield, Wisconsin. She plans on working with visiting artists (some former students and faculty) and mentoring local students from the area. She also plans to spend large amounts of time with her husband, Jon Carlstrom, who has been living in Bayfield since his retirement two years ago. Hope will keep connected with MSU through her daughter, Elspeth, who is currently an art student at MSU after transferring from the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Sheryl Dowlin Sheryl has worked as Professor in Speech Communication since One of her most memorable experiences at MSU was being a member of a Bush Foundation sponsored MSU Faculty Development Team. This team helped provide relevant faculty development workshops and seminars. One of the most meaningful professional and personal experiences she had was through her work on longitudinal community ethnographic research and assessment work from which focused on reconciliation efforts between the Dakota and Mankato communities. Sheryl greatly appreciates the institutional support she received to get this important work done and believes the benefits will extend beyond her time in Minnesota, including an in-depth understanding and appreciation for another culture, long-lasting relationships with members of the Dakota and other tribal groups, and lifelong cross-cultural communication skills that will enhance future work with diverse groups in Idaho. After retirement, Sheryl and her husband will be relocating to Boise, Idaho where her family lives and where she plans to continue to pursue some of her professional and personal interests. She also plans to play with and watch the development of her newest grandson. 2

5 Patricia Hale Pat has been a faculty member in Human Performance since During her time at MSU she has greatly appreciated getting to know faculty, staff and students of MSU. After retirement she plans to stay in Mankato and continue her volunteer activities in the community. Daniel Hanel Dan worked at MSU as a general maintenance worker for 21 years in the Student Union. Prior to coming to MSU, he worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Dan has a college degree from the University of Minnesota and is an ordained Lutheran minister. Since retirement Dan and his wife moved their camper to Corpus Christi, Texas where he has been studying Spanish (his sixth language). Dan and his wife plan to return to Minnesota for the summer, moving the camper to Two Harbors. Dan and his wife are having a great time in retirement and wish they had done it sooner. Birgitta Hendrickson Birgitta has been a faculty member in Modern Languages/Scandinavian Studies since She has many delightful memories of students/friends over three decades of being at MSU. She will miss her colleagues after leaving. When retired, she plans to do whatever she wants whenever! She is hoping to do some traveling, as well. Carol Larson Carol has been a faculty member and Associate Dean of the School of Nursing since While at MSU she greatly enjoyed teaching, conducting research and serving in the role of undergraduate Program Director. During retirement, Carol plans to enjoy music, travel remodeling her home, and general repair work on the farm. 3

6 Kil Lee Kil has been a faculty member in Mathematics & Statistics since His favorite experience at MSU was conducting a graduate seminar at Yokohama National University in Japan in The seminar was carried out every two years in Japan with an invited lecturer. Kil was the second lecturer for the event and very much enjoyed the impressive atmosphere for the seminar and the thoughtful questions and lively discussion. In retirement Kil plans to play golf and travel. Gary Lundin Gary has been in training and support in PALS development since While at MSU he most enjoyed homecoming when MSU was still the Indians and was located on lower campus. He remembers the riots, protests, and bomb scares during the Vietnam War. Gary is still working on his plans for retirement. Ruth Lysne Ruth has been a faculty member at MSU as the Assistant Director for Pre- Student Teaching Placements in the Department of Clinical and Field Experiences in the College of Education since While at MSU she greatly enjoyed working to establish relationship for clinicals, student teachers and professors in public schools and in international settings. During retirement, Ruth plans to work with Thai teachers of English to help achieve the Thai Educational Reform Act, substitute teach in schools who are College of Education partners and providing home stays for exchange students and teachers from Thailand. Linda Marshall Linda has worked at MSU since 1982, first in Student Health Services and then in Health Science, most recently as the Director of Alcohol and Drug Studies. During her time here she enjoyed assisting students meet their career goals by becoming licensed as alcohol and drug counselors. During retirement she plans to work in the area of forensic psychology. 4

7 Judith Metzler Judy was an administrative assistant in Health Services and had been at MSU since While at MSU she enjoyed working with her co-workers and helping the students who were patients in the clinic. Judy is enjoying her retirement very much particularly having no alarm clock most of the time. She has enjoyed traveling and having more time for family and friends. George O Clock George has been faculty member in Electrical & Computer Engineering & Technology since George has treasured his time spent in course work in the sciences. He enjoyed the core of excellent teachers and mentors he had at MSU. During retirement he plans to continue his research efforts in biomedicine. He will be taking classes in biological sciences, astronomy and theology. He will continue writing and intends to spend time flying and windsurfing. Robert Redhead Robert has been a faculty member in Sociology since While at MSU his favorite experience was teaching humanistic sociology. During retirement Robert plans to live in Minneapolis and travel in France. Carol Stiles Carol has worked as an office and administrative assistant in Student Health Services since While at MSU she most enjoyed the MSU hockey team s transition to the WCHA and the fun and excitement of the hockey games. She also fondly remembers the College of Business accreditation success, as she was involved in this with her husband, Jerry. After retirement, she and Jerry are moving to Rapid City and look forward to the challenges of making new friends. She looks forward to being closer to family members in Rapid City and Colorado. 5

8 Gerald Stiles Jerry has been a faculty member in Marketing and International Business since While at MSU he enjoyed the everyday events with students, staff and colleagues resulting in gradual improvements to the university such as international accreditation for the College of Business, the laptop initiative, and Division 1 Hockey. During retirement in Rapid City, Jerry plans to enjoy hunting, fishing, golf, and his and Carol s grandchildren. Hal Walberg Hal has been a faculty member in Philosophy since Upon retiring he will cherish the memories of students and colleagues from whom he learned unphilosophical things while at MSU. During retirement he plans to continue to subvert dominant paradigms, and hopes to invent a second (or perhaps third) act for himself. Ray Williams Ray has been a faculty member in Accounting and Business Law since During retirement he will be moving to Florida and going fishing. 6
