Schoen, Dean of the School of Dentistry Records, Administrative History Established in 1883 as the first dental college in Chicago, the Chicago Dental Infirmary was opened by Truman W. Brophy (Dean from ). The college, housed on 22 Adams Street (now 57 West Adams Street, near the Art Institute of Chicago), accepted only recent medical school graduates or current seniors in medical school who wished to pursue a dental degree. Along with lectures, students participated in clinical work, which continued to be an integral part of the curriculum until the school s closing in Graduates obtained their degree after finishing two twentyweek sessions over the course of two years. The Chicago Dental Infirmary remained an independent school for its first five years, being renamed the Chicago College of Dental Surgery in 1888 as part of a measure to include students without prior medical education. Student enrollment increased in these years. In order to accommodate the expanding student population, the college moved buildings twice from 1884 to 1889 first to a building at East Washington Street, then to the corner of Madison and Wabash Avenues. Chicago College of Dental Surgery became associated with Lake Forest University from 1889 to By 1900, the number of students in the graduating class had gone from two (1884) to one hundred sixty-five. In 1905, the administration restructured the curriculum, making it instead a three year, thirty-two-week session program. The school s final downtown location was on the corner of Michigan and Chicago College of Dental Surgery records, , Undated Page 1

2 Randolph, where it remained until From 1893 until the construction of the Maywood campus in 1969, the college was housed at the Medical Center Campus on Wood and Harrison Streets. In 1906, Chicago College of Dental Surgery and Lake Forest University discontinued their association, and the dental school instead partnered with Valparaiso University in Indiana until The school remained successful during wartime, and again restructured the curriculum into a four year program. After separating from Valparaiso University in 1920, the college remained independent until 1923, when it became affiliated with Loyola University. The college spearheaded research and turned out successful graduates that practiced around the world, many of which became deans or professors at other dental schools. By the 1950s, the college was renamed the Loyola University School of Dentistry Chicago College of Dental Surgery, and continued to be at the forefront of dental education, being the first dental school to incorporate closed circuit television as a method of instruction. The School of Dentistry experienced many changes under Dr. William P. Schoen. Schoen took office as the school s Dean in 1957, and supervised a remodel of parts of the Harrison Street building. New features included updated lab spaces, equipment, and seminar rooms for graduates and post-graduates. In 1962, the administration decided on a sixty-two acre plot of land in Maywood to be the location of the new dental school campus. Groundbreaking occurred on April 26, 1967, construction was completed in 1969, and classes in the new building started in the fall of that same year. In 1968, Dental Hygienist and Dental Assistant certificate programs were introduced. By 1972, the Dental Hygienist curriculum could be taken as either a two year certificate track, or a four year Bachelor of Science track. The Dental Hygienist program remained a part of the school until its closing, though the Dental Assistant program was cut by Alumni, students, and faculty spent 1983 celebrating the Centennial of the School of Dentistry. One hundred years after its establishment, the school was the largest dental school in Illinois and had its 10,000 th student graduating that year. A convocation marked the start of the Centennial, and further seminars, banquets, and outings followed throughout the year. On June 9, 1992, the school announced to students that it would be closing its doors on June 30, Loyola officials listed declining enrollment, high dental education costs, and a decreasing need for dentists as reasons for the decision. For the final school year, seniors were allowed to graduate, while other students received assistance in admittance and transfers to other dental schools. Faculty also were offered assistance in finding new positions, whether at Loyola s medical department, or elsewhere. Dental equipment from the school was either donated or sold to fellow medical departments, faculty, and alumni. The Maywood building is now the Maguire Center as part of the Loyola Medical Campus. 3 Scope and Content The records of the Chicago College of Dental Surgery consist of 2.5 linear feet (1.85 cubic feet) spanning from 1886 to 1999 and includes meeting minutes, course syllabi, student and faculty directories, academic calendars, clinical manuals, and event programs. Subjects included are the centennial celebration and construction of the Maywood campus.
