3 residen ICO Mission Statement The mission of the Illinois College of Optometry is to develop highly qualified clinical optometrists through excellence in optometric education. CELEBRATING 145 YEARS The Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) consists of both the College itself and the Illinois Eye Institute which is the clinical arm of the institution, with 110,000 patient visits annually. The President of the Illinois College of Optometry leads all aspects of the College and the Illinois Eye Institute. The President reports directly to the Board of Trustees and will build a foundation of trust between the President and governing board. physical resources within the higher education context. 4 Why Why ICO? The Illinois College of Optometry is one of the world s leading optometric institutions. Our size and reputation often precede us. Our students are making a real difference in the profession, healthcare and the world. Located in Chicago, ICO has the privilege of serving a vulnerable population of patients within the Illinois Eye Institute. This also serves as a resourcerich opportunity for our students to engage in complex cases throughout the course of their education, while training them to be compassionate providers who respect the dignity of the human person. We ve been refining and perfecting our curriculum and the art and science of clinical optometry since 1872, in an effort to best meet the needs of our students and patients. 5 ICO? Quick Facts CELEBRATING 145 YEARS All full-time faculty hold an OD, PhD, MD or MS, MA or equivalent. ICO s NBEO pass rate historically exceeds the national average. The student/faculty ratio in labs is 15:1. The student/faculty ratio in lecture is 155:1. ICO completed its most recent ACOE affirmation of accreditation in 2017 with no recommendations or suggestions for program improvement. ICO s annual operating budget is $37 million dollars with an investment portfolio of $49 million. ICO s annual audit has had unqualified opinions for the last 10 plus years. Institutional Development/ Fundraising is at 111% of the $2.5 million dollar goal this past year. The Illinois Eye Institute receives 110,000 patient visits each year. Quick Facts / 5
6 Can Candidate Profile The President is expected to exemplify a commitment to excellence and to promote a positive spirit and culture throughout every area of the institution. As the chief executive officer of the College, the President has general charge and final authority for all the affairs of the College. The President is responsible to the Board of Trustees and implements policies of the Board of Trustees. The President is responsible for the mission of the institution to develop highly qualified clinical optometrists through excellence in optometric education. At the Illinois College of Optometry the successful President will need to: Serve as a visionary, thoughtful leader; a strategic thinker; and an astute administrator who empowers the leadership group to be an effective team that is accountable for the ICO Mission. Understand the complexities of an increasingly competitive enrollment landscape; recruitment and retention of a highly qualified student body and the importance of higher education marketing and branding. Be an innovator who will envision fresh ways of reaching key markets while maintaining the academic qualities that sustain the institution. Lead fiscally sound financial strategies to successfully meet the mission of a single program institution. Inspire and lead an effective philanthropic culture linking ICO to Alumni, Chicagoland communities, and industry partners, while measurably increasing giving revenue. Serve as the Chief Fundraiser of the institution. Assure a curriculum that prepares its students for progressive optometric practice. Provide students and residents with an integrated health care experience that prepares them for practice within any healthcare setting. Assure the academic, clinical, research, and human relations culture of the institution is of the highest caliber and integrity. Provide a contemporary environment that meets the future physical and technological needs of its students, faculty, staff and patients. Interact effectively with the entire ophthalmic and health care community. Willingly seek alternative or creative means to achieve results and act as a fair arbitrator of institutional decisions. Build exceptional loyalty and support with students, alumni, patients, faculty, staff, affiliations, optometric and local communities. Be a voice in the legislative process at the local, state and federal level to advocate for the expansion of the scope of professional optometry and for higher education initiatives. 7 ndidate P CELEBRATING 145 YEAR S Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Doctor of Optometry or other appropriate graduate degree required, with preference for candidates who hold an MBA or other business-related graduate degree. Extensive knowledge of optometry or other health professions in an academic setting. Proven leadership success in higher education, health care, or related industries. Measurable institutional development and fundraising achievement. Able to fulfill all of the elements listed in the Candidate Profile. Individuals with senior executive experience in higher education, optometric or other healthcare organizations, or related institutions are invited to apply.
