1 Public Health Student Association Executive Board Members Our Objectives The objectives of the PHSA include: 1- To facilitate an interactive relationship between faculty, staff, alumni, and students of the DEPH. 2- To promote student involvement in the school, University, and community through service programs, and special events. 3- To present the suggestions and concerns of the student body to Graduate Programs Administration. 4- To contribute to the education and welfare of public health students in cooperation with public health organizations on a local, state, and national level.

2 President Courtney Avery (716) Courtney Avery graduated from the University of Miami with a BA in Anthropology and Microbiology & Immunology. She was excited to start the MPH program at the Miller School of Medicine in January 2012, with an interest in global health and infectious diseases. Her passion for community outreach led her to take a leadership role in the Public Health Students Association as the Co- President for the school year. She is thrilled to be working in her own community in Miami, expanding programs in Overtown to include the healthy cooking and nutrition classes at Booker T. Washington High School, and starting a community garden. Courtney is also a yoga instructor, and loves to share her knowledge with anyone who is willing to try a downward-facing dog. President Daniella Orihuela DOrihuela@med.miami.edu (786) Daniella Orihuela graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor s in biomedical engineering. Dani was born in Lima, Peru but has lived in Miami for the past 12 years. She also works as a third year Resident Assistant at the undergraduate campus of the university. She is thrilled about working with PHSA this year and is very excited about many of our community service projects such as the Cooking Canes Program. She recently got involved in yoga (it is awesome!) and loves frozen yogurt. In the future, Daniella plans to attend medical school and use her MPH degree to work in projects internationally.

3 Vice- President Yasmin Dias- Guichot (786) My name is Yasmin Dias- Guichot, born on the 25 th of February 1988 in Madrid, Spain. I started my schooling in Germany, finished high school in Portugal, obtained my undergraduate degree in Florida and finished my first masters in The Netherlands. My exposure to all of the countries and cultures that I have lived in and visited have guided me towards my interests in global health. I am the Vice-President of PHSA. Philanthropy Rebeca Alvarez RAlvarez3@med.miami.edu (305) I was born and raised in Miami, FL. I went to college and medical school at the University of Florida and am currently an MSPH candidate at University of Miami. My interests in public health are in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Health Economics. =)

4 Treasurer Cyprianna Green (954) Born and raised in the beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands. I graduated from the University of Miami in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. Currently in the MPH program with hopes of getting my PhD in Epidemiology. I am also a graduate assistant in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health here at the Miller School of Medicine. MPH Senator MD/MPH Liaison 2015 Manny Ocasio Bryan Stepanenko MOcasio@med.miami.edu (305) Bstepanenko@med.miami.edu (954) My name is Bryan Stepanenko and I am a Public Health Physician (MD/MPH) student. I am a second lieutenant in the United States Army Medical Corps (HPSP Scholarship) and a South Florida native. I was a firefighter/paramedic and rescue lieutenant for over five years before starting medical school and still maintain an interest in emergency and trauma care. My primary focus, however, has shifted to incorporating physical activity and nutrition into chronic disease management. I am the founder of the annual Push-Ups for PHSA fundraiser event and the distribution site coordinator for the organic produce service (Farm Fresh Miami) that is available at the Medical Wellness Center. 5 MD/ MPH Liaison 2015 Adam Crosland (941) Adam Crosland graduated from the University of Florida in 2011 with a degree in Business Administration, with a Management Focus, and a minor in Dance. As a second year MD/MPH student, he is currently interested in maternal fetal health on a global scale. His work in Gisenyi, Rwanda included partnerships with Rawanda Sustainable Families, which focused on microfinancing small family-based projects, and Barefoot, a group dedicated to using theatre and the visual arts to enhance health literacy and community engagement in a genocide survivor village. More recently, Adam has completed a health inventory perspective through the use of focus groups with the Kunah indians, an indigenous group, on Ticantiki, an island in the San Blas archipelago with the help of Sherri Porcelain. Shortly after the aforementioned public health endeavor, a maternal health survey was designed and administered by Adam in the Central Plateau of Haiti, under the guidance of Dr. Nahida Chakhtoura, in order to more accurately assess the current barriers to maternal health. He is excited to continue building bridging relationships between the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and the School of Medicine. MPH Delegate Aly Jaffer a.jaffer1@med.miami.edu (615) Hello there! My name is Aly Jaffer and I am a 1 st years MPH student. I am originally from Tennessee but have lived in Miami for the past 4 years, when I went to the University of Miami for undergrad. I became attracted to Public Health as a sophomore when I took a couple courses taught by Dr. Porcelain, one of which focused on Disasters and Complex Emergencies (around the time of the Earthquake in Haiti). I serve as the MPH senator, seeking to connect our program with the numerous programs throughout the University. 6 Communications Henry Olano (786) Hi all! I am a first semester MSPH student and a graduate student researcher in Dr. Lee s group. I was born in Colombia and moved to Miami when I was ten years of age. I spent my undergraduate years at Cornell in upstate NY, where I received a B.A. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology. Now I aim to get more involved in Public Health and maybe attend Medical School. I am looking forward to working with all of you as your communications officer in order to make this a fun and productive year. Social Nate Boire n.boire@med.miami.edu (603) Hello all! Thank you for electing me Social Chair of PHSA. I'm a first-year MPH student currently enrolled in the one-year Fast Track program. I was born and raised in Nashua, NH and received my bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of New Hampshire. My ultimate goal is to become a public health-minded physician providing care for underrepresented communities both at home and abroad. I live in Brickell, I'm a huge Boston sports fan, and enjoy living an active lifestyle. 7 Historian Kelly O'Brien (740) My name is Kelly O Brien; I am first year MPH student. I graduated from The Ohio State University with my bachelors in biology. I am thrilled to be the historian for PHSA. Photography is one of my favorite past-times and I look forward to capturing our memories. In my free time I love being out on the water whether it is fishing, diving or snorkeling. I am excited to explore this program and pursue all the global health opportunities. MD/MPH Liaison 2016 Jamie Diamond JEDiamond@med.miami.edu (404) Jamie is a first year MD/MPH student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is originally from Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a major in Hebrew & Jewish Cultural Studies. Jamie took a year off after undergrad to work in an Emergency Room as a medical technician and spend 5 months in Israel. In her free time, Jamie enjoys traveling, reading, and running.
