2 Texas A&M Health Science Center is a Rapidly Evolving Institution 1976 College of Medicine formed under Texas A&M University 1986 Institute for Biosciences and Technology (IBT) established in the TMC to foster creative research related to medicine, agriculture, animal sciences and engineering Formation of the School of Rural Public Health Baylor College of Dentistry joins Texas A&M System 1996 Formation of the Health Science Center consisting of: College of Medicine, Graduate School, Affiliated Hospitals, IBT 1999 HSC separated into independent administrative structure within the Texas A&M System 2006 Formation of the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy 2008 Establishment of the College of Nursing 2
3 Texas Suffers an Extreme Shortage of Health Care Professionals Texas ranks 41st in the U.S. in numbers of active patient care physicians, and 47th in the number of active primary care physicians Texas ranks 43rd in the number of registered nurses. Demand for full-time registered nurses in Texas exceeds supply by 22,000 and this is projected to widen to 70,000 by 2020 Texas lags behind the national average of pharmacists per person, at 1 per 1,238 patients vs. 1 per 1,204. In South Texas, it is 1:1,346. Texas ranks 44th in the number of dentists per 10,000 population Nearly 85% of the public health workforce in Texas has no formal, professional public health training 3

10 Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry Located in Dallas, the A&M Baylor College of dentistry is the most diverse dental school in the country with 42 percent underrepresented minority students. Current enrollment: 417 DDS students, 59 Bachelor s in dental hygiene, and 107 graduate students (master s and PhD in biomedical sciences. A new clinical education facility is needed to increase enrollment growth of 50%, from 100 to 150 per class to meet the need for more dentists in Texas.

12 School of Public Health: Increasing the Expertise of the PH Workforce Originally named the School of Rural Public Health and created by the Texas Legislature in 1998 Dropped rural in reflection of growing role in promoting health in rural, urban, global settings. Creation of a new Bachelor s of Science in Public Health (Fall 2014, College Station and McAllen) New Master s of Public Health (M.P.H) and Executive Master s in Healthcare Administration (MHA) programs starting in 2015 (Houston) 12
13 Rangel College of Pharmacy First professional school in South Texas Since 2010 we have added 309 pharmacists to the workforce 60% practice in medically underserved areas and 40% practice in South Texas. Youngest pharmacy school to be ranked in the top 50 in the country by U.S. News and World Report.
14 Secondary Campus College Station Expands the class size from 100 to 130 students and greatly expands the capability to produce pharmacists for the State of Texas. Addresses the growing need for pharmacists in Texas with their ever increasing role in primary care. Enhances research and educational opportunities for faculty and students Provides opportunities for research collaboration and innovation by pharmacists and pharmaceutical researchers in College Station and Kingsville 6/10/
