1 Hospital and Department Overview Brigham and Women s Hospital, located in Boston s Longwood Medical Area, is a 793-bed nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a founding member of Partners HealthCare, Inc. In , BWH was named the 6 th best hospital in the United States by US News & World Report s Honor Roll of America s Best Hospitals. The Department of Pharmacy provides services to inpatient, outpatient, and satellite clinic locations throughout the Metro Boston area. The department is regarded as an innovator and leader in medication safety technology, clinical information systems, and clinical pharmacy services at the local and national level. Brigham and Women s Hospital PGY-2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency General Information The Department of Pharmacy at Brigham and Women s Hospital offers a specialized residency in cardiology pharmacy practice. This one-year program is designed to provide advanced training in the area of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy and research. Program Fundamentals The primary emphasis of the cardiology residency is to develop clinicians with expertise in cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. Over the course of the year, the resident will gain experience in the management of complex patients, lead a comprehensive research project, strengthen his or her communication skills through formal and informal presentations and interactions with other healthcare providers in a variety of settings, and participate in cardiovascular and pharmacy-related interdisciplinary hospital committees. In addition, the resident will enhance his or her teaching skills by precepting pharmacy practice residents and students on cardiology rotations. 2 Expectations of the Resident The resident is expected to plan, design, and submit one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal, which could include an original research publication, a therapeutic review, a clinical update, or the like. The resident is expected to plan, design, and complete at least one major research project with guidance from preceptors and submit an abstract to a professional organization meeting. The resident is expected to complete at least one secondary research, local guideline or policy, and drug information project according to departmental needs. The resident is expected to participate in rotational projects according to preceptor assignments. The resident is expected to submit a clinical pearl for consideration at the Council of Boston Teaching Hospitals Pharmacy Grand Rounds. Expectations The resident is expected to author at least one Drug Administration Guideline. The resident is expected to contribute to departmental staff education through a CE presentation to the Department of Pharmacy staff, daily clinical meeting presentations, and participation in the departmental journal surveillance program. The resident is expected to contribute to multidisciplinary staff education to fellows, residents, interns, and nurses on pharmacotherapy as it relates to various cardiovascular topics, including but not limited to, heart failure, hypertension, anticoagulation management, and mechanical circulatory support. The resident is expected to actively participate on at least one institutional multidisciplinary committee. The resident is expected to precept and teach pharmacy students and PGY-1 residents. The resident is expected to participate in the recruitment of succeeding PGY-2 cardiology residents.

Examples include ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, American College of Cardiology, and Heart Failure Society of America Staffing Requirements o Residents are scheduled to staff every other to every third weekend and approximately one evening shift every other week o Residents are scheduled to staff holidays on a rotating basis o Additional staffing responsibilities are subject to departmental needs and may include participation in clinical programs
