2 Frequent presenter at national and international conferences. Author of multiple articles and book chapters. Current Position - Carle Physician Group, Department of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Division of Orthopedics, Champaign, Illinois Platform Statement One thing is certain; the future of healthcare will be different than what we know today. Market forces started changing the way we work many years ago, along before reform legislation, and it is crucial for ACFAS to help our members prepare for this change. We need to play to our strengths, which are our unique ability to educate and perform research not only our profession, but government, patients, insurance, and the media. We also need to educate other health care professionals and organizations about our unique education, training, and certification that are second to none. Such efforts will assist in our members becoming leaders in Accountable Care Organizations. And ACFAS-led research projects will provide solid evidence in the setting of fee schedules by private and public insurance. Our future will also be shaped by rapidly changing technology. The way we distribute our Journal and other educational information will change. Even our annual meeting program will evolve into a mobile app, as was piloted at the 2012 Annual Scientific Conference. As more states require more CME hours, the College must enhance its e-learning agenda to meet those needs. And, we also need to use more technology to educate our current and prospective patients through the Internet, podcasts, You Tube videos, and similar media. But, we also have unresolved issues from the past. These include scope of practice and privileging issues, as well as the residency shortage. ACFAS is heavily involved in all of these major endeavors and must stay involved. Standardization of our scope of practice across the country and the advancement resident training and fellowships will lead us to professional parity within foot and ankle surgery. I have had the privilege of serving on the ACFAS Board of Directors for the past three years. This experience has allowed me to witness how strong our organization has become over time. Our membership, CME attendance, Journal articles, and other metrics are at record levels. But we cannot become complacent. We must continue to push the envelope in our education and training, at all levels, and aggressively advocate for our vision to ensure not only our professional parity and patient care, but to prepare ourselves for tomorrow s business side of medicine. I am excited about the College s future and would welcome the opportunity to continue my service on the Board of Directors to ensure we are as successful tomorrow as we have been in the past. -continued-

Platform Statement The future of podiatric medicine and surgery is dependent on maintaining our leadership position as the foot and ankle experts within mainstream medicine and surgery. We have made admirable progress over the past generation based on a track record of excellence in education, excellence in training, and premier quality healthcare delivery. I am proud to have been a member of ACFAS for all 22 years of my practice and I am impressed with the direction the college has taken to improve our profession. The leadership of the college has taken podiatric medicine and surgery to a level we can all be proud of. Our efforts in research and development, as well as continued progress in evidence-based medicine will assure our position as the premiere providers of foot and ankle care into the future. I am committed to continuing this vision of excellence in education and patient care. I have been extremely active throughout my career with a variety of medical leadership and medical education experiences that I feel would allow me to make a positive contribution to the membership of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and to our great profession. Experienced lecturer in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery Current Position: Group practice, Orlando Foot and Ankle Clinic, Orlando, Florida. Platform Statement It is an honor to be nominated to serve on the ACFAS Board of Directors. Early in my career I had the good fortune of having mentors that have been instrumental in my involvement with ACFAS. These individuals showed me the College was the association to represent the foot and ankle surgeon. Since that time, I have been fortunate to serve the college in multiple arenas, including the last two years as chair of the Annual Scientific Conference Committee and JFAS section editor for reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery. I believe that these experiences cast a unique perspective and have prepared me to be a leader within ACFAS. The future of healthcare is in constant flux. This unpredictability, while uncomfortable, allows the College - and its members - a unique opportunity to advance in the medical community. ACFAS must inform public and private insurance companies, accrediting and credentialing organizations, and state advocacy groups about our unique training, education, and certification. Educating these groups will open doors for us to ACO multi-disciplinary teams and most importantly insurance panels. In addition, we must continue our movement toward a national scope of practice and making it essential to the medical community that we be invited to a seat at the table. Education is the foundation our success and no one does it better than ACFAS. We need to develop more local programs for all of our current and future members. Possibilities include
6 additional course offerings at regional meetings as well on online e-learning such as webinars and our widely popular podcasts. Students, residents, and young members are the future of our profession and the College. We must make this group a priority to carry the torch into the future. Educational opportunities will raise the bar in their competencies and advance the cause of professional parity within the national medical community. Another area vital to our success in building relationships with other medical specialties is evidence-based research. Increasing the funding and ease of obtaining research grants for quality programs is paramount. Residency and fellowship programs will provide us with tomorrow s research authorities in research and we should be training them today. Additionally, pushing the quality of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery will provide groundwork to accomplish these goals. Over the last decade our profession has made great strides in the medical community. From scope of practice issues, to parity with our orthopedic colleagues, ACFAS has been on the forefront to push the profession of foot and ankle surgery to its greatest heights. Now more than ever, with the ever changing healthcare world, the College must be on the front line pushing the envelope for our members. ACFAS is the only foot and ankle society that requires board certification for its membership. I am proud to place the FACFAS designation after my name and it would be an honor to serve on the Board of Directors.
