I undertake a comparative policy analysis of maternity, paternity and family leave policies in the United States and United Kingdom and trace the historical development of these policies from I specifically explore the impact that civil society activity and the legal framework have had on policymaking and the social construction of gender. Analysis draws on field research, 40 targeted interviews, archival sources, and data collected from governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Analysis suggests that the social construction of gender influences policymaking and helps to explain the path dependent development of family policies over time. Dissertation research involved holding targeted interviews with civil society leaders, government officials, academics, and policymakers. I also conducted archival research. Research Assistant, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Conducted research on poverty alleviation policies with a focus on conditional cash transfer programs and their impact on women and mothers. I created a comprehensive database of these programs, including the gendered nature of their design and 3
4 implementation. Research supported by Dr. Natasha Borges Sugiyama- Summer Thesis Field Research, Belize (Summer 2004). As an intern for the Human Rights Commission of Belize I conducted field research on human rights in the police department of Belize. I conducted interviews with over 80 police officers and concluded the project with a manuscript presented to the police department and Human Rights Commission.
