We hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays and got plenty of rest because the Winter Quarter is jam-packed with a plethora of fun events and wonderful new experiences. We encourage you to take advantage of all the opportunities you have this quarter to learn and grow. Get to know a fellow scholar through the events planned by the scholar council. 5 College Access ACT/SAT Verbal Test Prep Workshop (Juniors only) Students are required to attend every session. (Seniors have priority) At this workshop, open to Scholars and their parents, an ISAC representative will discuss what students need to be looking for in comparing financial aid awards, and learn about what types of questions students need to ask financial aid offices before accepting an award. The students receive award comparison worksheets, a helpful tool when for comparing awards. 6 Leadership CSP LEAD Program (For Seniors Only!) CSP LEAD is a new, unique and highly interactive leadership program at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Through this program, you will have the opportunity to examine your leadership potential and consider your future development. Facilitated by Booth s Leadership Development Senior Coaches and current second year Booth Students, sessions will include a study of your personality as it relates to leadership, and a session on the individual impact we have on group process in teams. Minimal pre-work will be required in preparation for this programming. Participation is mandatory for all seniors so you will be pre-registered for this course. 7 CPS Global Classrooms: Model United Nations Club CPS Global Classrooms is an innovative educational program that engages high school students in an exploration of current world issues through interactive simulations and curricular materials. During the class simulations of the United Nations (UN) Security Council and other UN organs, students tackle global concerns including poverty, refugee protection and environment as they role play country, interest group, or nongovernmental organization positions. Participation in the CPS Model UN Conference on Friday, April 26, 2013 is required! Special note: Students will earn a leadership and civic engagement credit! 8 AT&T Innovative Technology Shark Tank The workshop is designed for students to collaborate utilizing innovative thinking and reasoning on real-time solutions to enhance the world of technology. Similar to the T.V show Shark Tank students will be divided into teams to develop prototypes of their projects which they will present to a panel of judges from AT&T. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team! Students will also be introduced to information on college scholarships in the field of technology, careers in telecommunications and access to cutting-edge technological innovations from AT&T. Parent are encouraged to attend as audience members and to support their scholars team! Special Note: Dress for the workshop is Business Casual. Students will earn a leadership and a lecture credit for their participation in this workshop and the team prep meeting. Mandatory Team Prep Meeting will occur on Tuesday, February 12 th from 10am -12 noon. Refreshments will be provided! 9 HPREP (For Sophomores Only) The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) is a unique and exciting opportunity for high school students to learn more about and explore a possible career in a health profession. The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) chapter, National Network of Latin American Students (NNLAMS), and Community Health board of the University of Chicago s Pritzker School of Medicine co-sponsor this program. The entire program is run by medical students. Over the course of 6 Saturdays, students will be invited to the University of Chicago campus, where they will participate in a variety of lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities. In the past, workshops have included: guided heart dissections, training in physical exam skills, and classes about organ systems.. Every Saturday consists of sessions in the morning from 9am to Noon. The high school students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with medical students and form mentorships and friendships. There will be opportunities to meet physicians, nurses, and other health care professions. Scholars must apply for this opportunity and must attend every Saturday to receive credit for these workshops. Special note: Students will earn a lecture and leadership credit! 10 Lectures University of Chicago-MLK Celebration Kick off the University of Chicago s Black Heritage Celebration with the MLK Celebration The keynote Speaker will be Civil Rights Author and Documentary Filmmaker, Judy Richardson. A Veteran of the southern Civil Rights Movement, Judy began her film work with the Academy Awardnominated, 14-hour PBS series, Eyes on the Prize, for which she was Series Associate Producer and Education Director. Special Note: CSP Founder and Executive Director, Ms. Kim Ransom will be presented with a Diversity Leadership Award at the celebration! There will be a reception immediately following the event at Ida Noyes Hall that all are welcome to attend! Date: Thursday, January 17, 2013 Time: 6pm Location: Rockefeller Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave. Little Brother/Friends of the Elders Informational Session The lecture will be given by Christine Bertrand, Intergenerational Program Coordinator for Little Brothers Friends of the Elders in Chicago. The lecture will detail the services that the organization provides and discuss the reality of seniors who lack the support networks that can make their lives feel meaningful. Scholars will decorate gift bags that will be given to the seniors at one of the parties given by the organization, as well. This lecture must be attended by all scholar who register for the civic engagement activity, Movie & Discussion with Elders from Little Brothers Friends of the Elders. 11 Civic Engagement Youth Violence in Chicago Symposium Collegiate Scholars will host a Youth Violence in Chicago Symposium focusing on a range of topics related to youth violence in Chicago. The guest speaker will be Tio Hardiman, Director of Ceasefire Chicago followed by breakout sessions led by your fellow CSP scholars! Teens from IIT Boeing Scholars, Chicago Scholars, and Office of Special Program s Upward Bound Program will attend. There will be representatives from several community organizations that focus on violence reduction in Chicago and will share information on how to lead violence prevention program in your communites. Attendance at this event is strongly encouraged for all scholars. Breakfast will be provided from 8:30am-9:00am. Date: Saturday, March 23, 2013 Time: 8:30am-12pm Location: BSLC 115(Biological Sciences Learning Center) 924 East 57 th Street Movie & Discussion w/ Little Brothers Friends of the Elders Scholars and several elders from Little Brothers/Friends of the Elders will watch the film, The Man in a Chair, and discuss some of the themes featured in the film over lunch. The film deals with issues related to aging, bullying, and the development of relationships between seniors and teens. If you would like to participate in this event you must also attend the Friends of the Elders: Informational Lecture. We will take CTA to this location. Arrive at the CSP office by 12:30pm to ride the train as a group. 12 Arts & Culture Hamburg Ballet: Nijinsky Considered one of the world s greatest companies, Hamburg Ballet presents a work never before seen in Chicago, the premiere of Nijinsky, by acclaimed American choreographer John Neumeier. Nijinsky is based on the life and legend of one of the most exceptional artists of our century, Vaslav Nijinsky. The score for the ballet includes music by Chopin as well as Rimsky- Korsakov s Scheherazade. Special Note: Limited to 20 scholars Date: Friday, February 1, 2013 Time: 7:30pm Location: Harris Theater for Music and Dance, 205 E. Randolph St. Chicago, IL How Long will I Cry? Play Woven together from interviews gathered by journalist Miles Harvey and his students at DePaul University, How Long Will I Cry? provides raw, truthful insight into the problem of youth violence. By giving voice to those who know the tragic consequences of violence firsthand families of the victims, residents of crime-ridden neighborhoods and especially young people How Long Will I Cry? inspires all of us to join together in search of a solution. 13 Words Inspire Movement Workshop CSP s own Ms. Vershawn Sanders and two members from her contemporary dance company, Red Clay Dance, will lead a 1 ½ hour movement workshop exploring how words can inspire movement. Participants will get a general overview of modern and contemporary dance techniques and some basic dance improvisation and composition skills. Using text from famous speeches by American leaders, students will work in groups to create a short dance presentation to share at the end of the workshop. No prior dance experience is necessary.
