1 The Graduate School Transforming graduate education
2 Did you know? Each year the Graduate School recognizes up to three exemplary graduate students for their character, service, outstanding contributions, and academic achievements with a $500 award. The Graduate School s Diversity Scholars program provides support for students to develop and implement initiatives aimed at addressing and improving diversity and inclusion at the university. The Graduate School provides extensive training and mentorship for Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and founded the innovative GTA Academy of Excellence.
3 What makes us special? The Graduate Life Center The Graduate Life Center (GLC) is the heart of a progressive, inclusive graduate community and gathers administrative, academic, social, and residential functions all under one roof. The GLC offers housing, academic, and meeting spaces; programming and social activities; and Graduate School offices in an award-winning complex not found at any other institution. The GLC provides students opportunities to meet and collaborate with faculty and peers across disciplines, develop skills for academic and professional success, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Transformative Graduate Education Experience (TGE) Transformative Graduate Education (TGE) is a universitywide initiative developed by Karen P. DePauw, vice president and dean for graduate education, and facilitated through the Graduate School. TGE provides the philosophical underpinnings for transforming graduate education through the development and implementation of programs and opportunities that complement and challenge disciplinary academic education. The initiative is designed to foster significant change in the preparation of graduate students as the next generation of scientists, educators, scholars, engineers, artists, and career professionals in an evolving global context. Interdisciplinary Programs Graduate education at Virginia Tech transcends traditional disciplinary perspectives and promotes collaboration across colleges, departments, and academic units. Interdisciplinary education and research embrace diversity, inclusiveness, educational breadth, and interdependence. Virginia Tech offers a number of interdisciplinary programs (cross-college, cross-university). Seven institutes promote interdisciplinary research and discovery. Application and Admission Admission Requirements All applicants must have a baccalaureate degree or the equivalent of a U.S. four-year degree from a regionally accredited institution. All applicants must submit the following items: Completed application Official transcripts from all institutions where a bachelor s degree was received or graduate-level work was undertaken Non-refundable application fee Other materials required by departments may include the following (check department websites for details): Letters of recommendation Statement of purpose Résumé or curriculum vitae Supplemental information (example of written work, essay questions, etc.) An official report of test scores (GRE, GMAT, etc.) International Applicants International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency. 5 The Graduate School Graduate students at Virginia Tech are an important and valued part of the academic community. We view graduate education as a partnership between outstanding graduate students and distinguished and internationally renowned faculty. Graduate students collaborate with faculty to continue our longstanding commitment to learning, discovery, and engagement. Did you know? Virginia Tech s Bouchet Graduate Honor Society chapter recognizes outstanding scholarly achievement and promotes diversity and excellence in doctoral education. Little Hokie Hangout is a part-time parent cooperative established by Virginia Tech Graduate School to provide affordable and quality child care to students with families. Work-life grants are available to all students who are expecting or adopting children.
6 Did you know? Graduate students can join the Virginia Tech Science Connection Advisory Network (VT-SCAN) outreach initiative to mentor young people in the local community and beyond who come from diverse backgrounds and are curious about science. Global Perspectives Developed in 2005 by Vice President and Dean for Graduate Education Karen P. DePauw, the Global Perspectives Program (GPP) provides graduate students the opportunity to explore differences in academic practices and higher education issues through collaboration with students, faculty and administrators at institutes including the universities of Basel, Zurich and Lugano and the Polytechnic Institute of Milan. Virginia Tech s campus in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland serves as a base camp for the GPP students, who work on individual and group research projects. More than 120 graduate students have participated, representing all eight of the university s colleges. GPP is an integral part of the Graduate School s Transformative Graduate Education initiative. A graduate ombudsperson is available to graduate students for confidential consultation and assistance with addressing concerns that arise in the university setting. Hundreds of graduate students participate in the Graduate Student Assembly s annual research symposium, which draws a wide audience from across the university and beyond. Symposium participants are eligible for more than $13,000 in awards.
