2 I am writing to you on behalf of the Houston Bar Association Auxiliary (HBAA) about our 3rd Annual Chili and Pie Cook Off. The Houston Bar Association Auxiliary s mission is to assist the Houston Bar Association, the Houston Young Lawyers Association, and the State Bar of Texas, to promote a better understanding and relationship between the general public and the legal profession through community service projects and to encourage social relations among its members. One of the main tenants of our organization is to raise funds to provide scholarships for local law students. Each year, our Charitable Fund strives to raise enough funds to award three (3) $ scholarships to one (1) student at each of the three (3) local Law Schools in Houston. (Houston College of Law, University of Houston, and Thurgood Marshall School of Law). Last year we were able to accomplish awarding these three scholarships by raising an additional $21, as a result of our fundraising events, including our Chili and Pie Cook Off. The 2017 Chili and Pie Cook Off was held in January with local law firms, legal departments, legal associations, and other groups involved in the legal community competing against each other for best chili and pie in the Houston Legal Community. There were about 250 people in attendance enjoying chili and pie, St. Arnold s beer and sounds from a local live band. The entriesarejudgedbyactualfederal,county, and municipal court area judges. Some of Houston s most prominent legal minds turn out for this event. We were so delighted with the success and popularity of the Chili Cook that it has become an annual event. This year we are holding the event at the Bayou City Event Center Pavilion near NRG Stadium on February 10 th, 2018 from 5:00 9:00 p.m. We are hoping to double last year s attendance. We are expecting an even larger turnout due to the increased popularity and uniqueness of this event in the legal community. We have again partnered with the Houston Young Lawyer s Association (2,250 members) and the HBA (12,000 members) for increased involvement and attendance. This paired with member distributions will reach over 45,000 impressions even before the event starts. The Save the Date has already reached an initial 10,000 inboxes. Come out and enjoy as teams compete for the best chili or pie in the Houston Legal Community. Law Firms, legal departments, legal organizations, and students, are all welcome to come out to this great event benefiting the Houston Legal Community. The 4 th Annual HBAA Chili and Pie Cook off will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Bayou City Events Center Pavilion which is located off Knight Road near the NRG Stadium. Doors to the event open at 5:00pm. A new great live band will provide throwback tunes and liven things up. Got kids? Bring them! This event is family friendly. In addition to Best Chili, there will be awards for Best Pie, Best Decorated Booth and People s Choice. All of the chili awards will be judged by sitting Judges. Didn t win don t worry. There will be a silent auction to give you the opportunity to walk away with something. This is a fun filled event benefiting the HBAA Charitable Fund which has provided scholarships to students from the three local law schools for years. Stories of last year s recipients are on the following pages.

Fanny Turcios is a second year law student at South Texas College of Law. She grew up in Bryan College Station, Texas, and received her Bachelor s Degree in Anthropology from Texas A&M University.

3 Fanny Turcios is a second year law student at South Texas College of Law. She grew up in Bryan College Station, Texas, and received her Bachelor s Degree in Anthropology from Texas A&M University. Fanny s family migrated to the United States in the 1990s because of the Salvadorian Civil War. Fanny Turcios was the first in her family to graduate high school and university, and she is now the first in her family to pursue a professional degree. After law school, she intends to continue leaving a legacy for her family through her passion for service, hard work, gratitude, and intellectual curiosity. Fanny was the Assistant Executive Editor in the Fall of 2016 for the South Texas Law Review and was also recently named Research Editor on the Executive Board of the South Texas Law Review. She is also a Director of the Board of Advocates, a finalist in the Fall Intramural Moot Court Competition, the 2L representative for the Houston Young Lawyers Association, and a member of Phi Delta Phi, an honor extended to the top 20.0% of her law school class. Her community involvement includes serving as a translator for the Asylum/Human Trafficking Clinic at STCL.

4 Ieshia Smith is the proud mother of five (5) children. She has not had an easy life, having been placed into Children Protective Services as a young child, dropping out of school, and losing the father of four (4) of her children when pregnant with her fourth. However, encouraged by her Bishop and Pastor, she returned to school to obtain her GED and continued on to graduate from the University of Houston Downton with a 3.5 grade point average. She is now a 2L at Thurgood Marshall School of Law ranking in the top 15.0% of her class. She also, somehow, finds the time to work with the non profit Urban Research and Resource Center, serve as an academic tutor for 1L students, serve as a Student Ambassador for her school, serve on the board of the Christian Legal Society, as an officer for Parents Attending Law School, and as an Usher Board Member for Ministers for Christ Christian Center. Ieshia s plans for the summer include serving as court appointed Special Ad Litem with Child Advocates.

Gloriana Gonzalez is a 2L at the University of Houston Law Center. Having moved here from Costa Rica at the age of three, she has since then called Houston her home.

She is involved with the Hispanic Law Students Association at UHLC through the mentorship program and also as an executive board member. She is a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution team and has proudly represented her university at the International Chamber of Commerce Competition in Paris, France. Gloriana is also On the Dean s List, competed in the Tom Newhouse Mediation Competition in the Fall of 2016, and won a special award for Best Advocacy Skills at the ICC Mediation Competition in February of this year. She is presently employed as a Law Clerk for Liu & Associates having previously served as a Law Clerk for the UH Office of the General Counsel and as a Legal intern for the Panama Supreme Court National Center for Conflict Resolution.
