FACHEX/Tuition Exchange Informational Session Presented by Undergraduate Admission & Human Resources April 30, 2014
Info Session Objectives To explain the difference between the tuition remission benefit and the opportunity for a FACHEX award/tuition Exchange scholarship To provide general information regarding FACHEX/Tuition Exchange programs To answer questions about how to apply for FACHEX/Tuition Exchange for the 2015/2016 academic year
Tuition Remission Subject to limits set forth in the policies: Applies to eligible faculty, staff, dependent children and retirees Provides tuition for eligible degrees/courses taken at LMU or LLS If you are eligible, you WILL RECEIVE the tuition benefit
FACHEX/Tuition Exchange Programs that provide eligible dependent children the ability to apply for tuition awards/scholarships from participating colleges/universities Eligibility to apply for the benefit DOES NOT guarantee that you will receive an award/scholarship
What is it? FACHEX FACHEX (Faculty, Administrator, and Staff Children Exchange Program) is an UNDERGRADUATE tuition remission program Who does it apply to? Dependent children eligible for tuition remission benefits at LMU What Does it Offer? Allows eligible dependent children to apply for the same benefits at participating importing Jesuit institutions.
FACHEX Participating Institutions [All Jesuit Institutions in the USA except Georgetown] Boston College Canisius College College of Holy Cross Creighton University Fairfield University Fordham University Gonzaga University John Carroll University LeMoyne College Loyola Marymount University Loyola University Chicago Loyola University Maryland Loyola University New Orleans Marquette University Regis University Rockhurst University Saint Joseph s University Saint Louis University Saint Peter s College Santa Clara University Seattle University Spring Hill College University of Detroit Mercy University of San Francisco University of Scranton Wheeling Jesuit College Xavier University
FACHEX - Limitations Opportunity NOT benefit Eligibility for FACHEX does not guarantee admission to, nor a FACHEX award from, a participating institution What is the award? The receiving institution awards the same tuition remission it would offer the children of its own faculty and staff; it does NOT cover fees/room & board, etc.
FACHEX How To Apply Student applies for admission to the participating institution(s) of his/her choice. The eligible parent contacts the LMU FACHEX coordinator and requests, via , that certification of his/her child s eligibility to participate in the FACHEX program be sent to the schools of choice. Request should include: Student s Legal Name Current school student is attending Student s Home Address List of Jesuit institutions to which the student is applying NOTE: Some schools require FACHEX candidates to apply for admission by November 1 st of their senior year in high school. It is recommended that all certifications must be requested by October 15, 2013.
FACHEX How To Apply The LMU FACHEX coordinator verifies the dependent s eligibility to receive this benefit electronically. A copy of the certification is sent to the eligible dependent s parent.
FACHEX What Happens Next? The importing university notifies the student of his/her admission to the University. The coordinator at the "importing" university will notify the student if the FACHEX award will be granted no later than April 1st.
FACHEX KEY POINTS To be eligible to apply for FACHEX, your child must be eligible for tuition remission at LMU Your child must satisfy the "importing" university's admission standards before he/she can be considered for a FACHEX award. Eligibility and admission to a participating university does NOT guarantee that a FACHEX award will be granted.
Tuition Exchange Scholarship Program What is it? The TE program is a tuition scholarship program Who does it apply to? Dependant children eligible for tuition remission benefits at LMU What Does it Offer? Allows eligible dependent children the opportunity to apply for a scholarship at participating institutions.
TE Participating Institutions Tuition Exchange (TE) counts among its members over 600 colleges and universities Participating institutions are located in 47 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Greece, and United Arab Emirates. has full list
TE - Limitations Opportunity NOT a benefit TE is a competitive scholarship, not an employee benefit. No guarantee that LMU can sponsor every eligible child No guarantee that a sponsored student will be granted admission OR a TE scholarship
TE - Limitations What does it pay for? Each importing school determines its own award (e.g., could limit to $31,500 for ) It covers some or all tuition for up to 8 semesters; NOT fees/room & board, etc. Any difference between TE scholarship value and the actual tuition is the responsibility of the student's family.
TE - Limitations Example College A (using limits) College A s tuition is $38,000 per year Tuition Exchange requires College A to pay a minimum of $31,500 College A awards a $31,500 tuition exchange scholarship The difference between the TE scholarship ($31,500) and the actual tuition ($38,000) is not covered by tuition exchange and is the responsibility of the student's family.
TE - Limitations How many students will LMU sponsor in the Fall? We do not know the number of students LMU can certify as eligible for the TE scholarship process. How will LMU pick the sponsored students? LMU will sponsor the students whose parents have the most years of continuous service as measured from the most recent hire date in a full-time (faculty) or full-time, regular (staff) status
TE - Limitations It is the student s sole responsibility to comply with the procedures for tuition exchange scholarships set by other institutions. The receiving institution sets the number and criteria for award decisions. Policies, procedures and deadlines may vary. Information about any special requirements or conditions from a participating school can be obtained from the TE Liaison Officer at the school of choice.
TE How to Apply for Select the schools to which your student wants to apply Fill out the TE Scholarship Application Form Available on MYLMU/HR Submit by September 15, 2014 PLEASE NOTE: Schools deadlines for tuition exchange scholarship certification vary widely. Because time is of the essence, late application forms will not be considered.
TE What Happens Next? You will receive confirmation that your application was received from LMU s Liaison Officer LMU s Liaison Officer will inform the parent whether their child is being sponsored in October LMU s Liaison Officer will certify the sponsored candidates to the schools listed on the application form in October
TE What Happens Next? The importing university notifies the student of his/her admission to the University. The Liaison Officer at the "importing" university will notify the student if a Tuition Exchange Scholarship has been awarded to them. Participating members determine the dates applicants are informed that they have been awarded a Tuition Exchange scholarship.
TE KEY POINTS To be eligible to apply for a TE scholarship, your child must be eligible for tuition remission at LMU. LMU must sponsor the student s application for TE scholarship. The number of sponsored candidates can vary from year to year. Your child must satisfy the "importing" university's standards for admission before he/she can become qualified for the Tuition Exchange Scholarship program. Eligibility and admission to a participating university does NOT guarantee that a Tuition Exchange scholarship will be awarded.
