2 The idividual Califoria State Colleges were brought together as a system by the Doahoe Higher Educatio Act of I 1972 the system became the Califoria State Uiversity ad Colleges, ad i 1982 the system became the Califoria State Uiversity. Today the campuses of the CSU iclude comprehesive ad polytechic uiversities ad, sice July 1995, the Califoria Maritime Academy, a specialized campus. The oldest campus Sa José State Uiversity was fouded i 1857 ad became the first istitutio of public higher educatio i Califoria. The ewest CSU Chael Islads opeed i fall 2002, with freshme arrivig i fall Resposibility for the Califoria State Uiversity is vested i the Board of Trustees, whose members are appoited by the goveror. The trustees appoit the chacellor, who is the chief executive officer of the system, ad the presidets, who are the chief executive officers of the respective campuses. The trustees, the chacellor, ad the presidets develop systemwide policy, with implemetatio at the campus level takig place through broadly based cosultative procedures. The Academic Seate of the Califoria State Uiversity, made up of elected represetatives of the faculty from each campus, recommeds academic policy to the Board of Trustees through the chacellor. Academic excellece has bee achieved by the Califoria State Uiversity through a distiguished faculty whose primary resposibility is superior teachig. While each campus i the system has its ow uique geographic ad curricular character, all campuses, as multipurpose istitutios, offer udergraduate ad graduate istructio for professioal ad occupatioal goals as well as broad liberal educatio. All the campuses require for graduatio a basic program of Geeral Educatio Requiremets regardless of the type of bachelor s degree or major field selected by the studet. The CSU offers more tha 1,800 bachelor s ad master s degree programs i some 240 subject areas. May of these programs are offered so that studets ca complete all upper-divisio ad graduate requiremets by part-time, late afteroo, ad eveig study. I additio, a variety of teachig ad school service credetial programs are available. A limited umber of doctoral degrees are offered joitly with the Uiversity of Califoria ad with private istitutios i Califoria. Erollmets i fall 2005 totaled 405,000 studets, who were taught by some 22,000 faculty. The system awards more tha half of the bachelor s degrees ad a third of the master s degrees grated i Califoria. HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY I 1957, Cal State Fullerto became the 12th State College i Califoria to be authorized by the Legislature. The followig year a site was desigated i ortheast Fullerto. It was purchased i 1959, whe Dr. William B. Lagsdorf was appoited as foudig presidet, the first staff was selected ad plas for opeig the ew college were made. Orage Couty State College started classes for 452 full- ad/or part-time studets i September, 1959, usig leased quarters for its admiistrative offices o the Fullerto Uio High School campus ad for its classrooms at Fullerto s Suy Hills High School. I the fall of 1960, the college opeed classes o its ow campus, where it occupied 12 temporary buildigs. I May 1971, Dr. L. Doald Shields, who had served as actig presidet for seve moths, was appoited the secod presidet of Cal State Fullerto. Dr. Miles D. THE CAMPUS AND ITS BUILDINGS Oce part of a vast orage grove, Cal State Fullerto s attractively ladscaped mai campus ow cosists of 236 acres bouded o the south by Nutwood Aveue, o the west by State College Boulevard, o the orth by Yorba Lida Boulevard ad o the east by the Orage Freeway (57). The 26-acre botaical garde is a livig museum of rare plats from aroud the world. The ecologically arraged botaical collectio depicts habitats from the desert to the tropics. CAL STATE FULLERTON - IRVINE CAMPUS Irvie Campus is a brach campus of Califoria State Uiversity, Fullerto. Located o a portio of the former El Toro Marie Corps Air Statio, ow Heritage Fields, i Irvie, just 19 miles from the Fullerto campus, the Irvie Campus serves as a regioal ceter for meetig the higher educatio eeds of cetral ad south Orage Couty. The Irvie Campus offers course work at the upper-divisio level (juior/seior), post-baccalaureate, ad graduate levels. All lower-divisio (freshma/sophomore) geeral educatio ad major course work is take either at the mai campus at Fullerto, a commuity college, or a private higher educatio istitutio. The Irvie Campus occupies a 50,900- square-foot two-story structure built aroud a cetral courtyard area ad a secod 16,000- square-foot, oe-story structure. The uiversity is primarily a commuity-based istitutio, with two o-campus residece facilities. The majority of our studets live i Orage Couty. Sixty-four percet of all studets take 12 or more hours of course work each semester. Of the fall 2006 ew udergraduate studets, 43 percet came from Califoria public high schools, 5 percet from Califoria private high schools, 46 percet came from Califoria commuity colleges, 2 percet from other Cal State campuses, 1 percet from other Califoria colleges ad uiversities, ad 2 percet from other states or other coutries. The fall 2006 ew graduate studets came from Cal State Uiversity campuses (54 percet), other Califoria colleges ad uiversities (26 percet), ad other states or other coutries (20 percet). The studet body is 11 percet first-time freshme, 19 percet other lower divisio, 55 percet upper divisio, ad 15 percet graduate levels. Fifty-ie percet of all studets are wome. The media age of all studets is 22; udergraduates have a media age of 21, while graduate studets have a media age of 28. Course offerigs durig the day ad at ight provide our studets with flexibility i their schedules. Most studets choose to atted durig the daytime. Virtually all upper-divisio ad graduate studets have declared a major field of study. Thirty-oe percet of our lower-divisio studets are i the process of explorig differet fields prior to declarig a major. Durig , 5,779 udergraduates received their baccalaureate degrees, ad 1,323 graduates received their master s degrees. I the fall of 2005, there were 744 fulltime faculty ad admiistrators ad 1,287 part-time faculty members teachig o the campus.
