1 Submitted by: Nancy S. Barrett, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs STATUS REPORT ON Informational Report Information on accreditation at Wayne State University is compiled annually. Attached is a summary report on the accreditation status of Wayne State University and its colleges and programs as of July The report lists colleges, schools, departments, and/or programs that have professional or specialized accreditation. The accrediting agency, the accreditation status, and the anticipated date of the next review are indicated for each program. Appendix I lists each resident-physician program and its current accreditation status. Accreditation is intended to assure the public of the quality and integrity of institutions and programs. The university also assesses the quality and integrity of all its programs through ongoing and periodic reviews such as program review, assessment of student outcomes, and other review procedures. There are two types of accreditation: general, and specialized or professional. General accreditation is awarded by national or regional associations that grant institutional accreditation. Institutional accreditation is concerned with evaluation of an educational institution as a whole. The regional accrediting agency for Wayne State University is the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (NCA)-The Higher Learning Commission. Wayne State University s next institutional accreditation review with NCA s Higher Learning Commission is scheduled for the academic year. The university will begin preparation for the self-study during the next academic year. Specialized or professional accreditation is awarded by professional or voluntary agencies that have recognized responsibilities for establishing criteria, visiting, and evaluating programs. Specialized and professional accreditation is required frequently for licensure, certification and other types of credentialing. Accrediting agencies conduct site visits on a periodic basis with external peer reviewers and may require interim reports between site evaluations. Wayne State has 44 accrediting or other agencies that examine programs. In addition, all graduate medical residency programs are subject to accreditation reviews. Costs for specialized or professional accreditation reviews are borne by college/school budgets. Both governmental and non-governmental organizations provide oversight of the functioning of accrediting agencies. Under Title IV of the Higher Education Act, the eligibility and certification process for institutions of higher education and the official recognition of accrediting agencies are under the purview of the Secretary of Education, U.S. Department of Education. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) serves as a non-governmental national accreditation coordinating body for the higher education community and serves to oversee regional and specialized accrediting agencies.
