1 M.A. COUNSELING The Counseling Program Overview The Counseling Program, housed in the Division of Education and Counseling, is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Our 60-hour graduate program furthers the Mission of Xavier by preparing counselors to assume roles of leadership and service in society as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC) through programmatic alignment with CACREP standards which align with the educational requirements of state licensing boards for professional counselors. The Counseling Program offers two specialization tracks; one in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the other in School Counseling. The counseling faculty is committed to preparing candidates to be knowledgeable, competent, reflective and ethical clinical mental health counselors and professional school counselors. Regardless of specialization track, students pursuing an M.A. in Counseling must demonstrate knowledge and skills in all Student Learning Outcomes identified for core and specialization areas. All students are expected to exhibit the highest degree of professionalism in facilitating the personal growth and development of clients at the individual, institutional, and systemic levels. This preparation takes place in a diverse teaching and learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including scholarly works and community service. In addition to the admission requirements for the XULA Graduate School, applicants to the counseling program must participate in a structured group interview to further assess student disposition and aptitude as a graduate counselor student.

2 Clinical Mental Health Counseling Candidates are prepared as professional counselors in a diverse teaching and learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including scholarly works, community service, and experiential exercise. Our counselor training utilizes CACREP s eight content areas to prepare candidates to work in a variety of diverse clinical settings including agencies, institutions, and in private practice; collaborate with the local communities; promote a more just and human society through service learning and service projects; commit to ongoing program evaluation; advocate for their clients and the counseling profession; and, engage in continuing professional development.
