Today, MSK is one of 41 National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, with state-of-the-art science flourishing side by side with clinical studies and treatment. In 2014 US News & World Report ranked MSK as #1 in cancer care. Healthcare Education Event Essay Writing Contest and Summer Internship Video Contest Description and Guidelines st Prize Winner Sarah Tress from Staten Island Technical High School with Radiology: Giving Back to New York City program leadership Description The annual Radiology: Giving Back to New York City program is a unique opportunity for 11 th graders and their teachers to participate in a professional healthcare education event held at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The overall goal of the program is to inspire and educate students and teachers in available careers in healthcare with a focus on radiology, the role of imaging in cancer, patient care, and biomedical research. Students learn about careers in radiology, medicine, nursing, hospital administration, technology, and more. Participating students research and write an essay about a specific topic in radiology. The top five essays will be awarded with cash prizes. In addition, this year students will submit a 90 second video to compete for the opportunity to participate in one of five (5) paid summer internships which will be funded through the National Institutes of Health grant 5U54CA

2 Five (5) Awards in Total Each of the five (5) winners will be invited to participate in a National Institutes of Health sponsored paid summer internship, supported by NIH grant 5U54CA st Place: $250 award 2 nd Place: $150 award 3 rd Place: $100 award Honorable Mention: $50 award Honorable Mention: $50 award The essays and video blogs will be judged by: Radiology Research Staff Members, Senior Leadership, IT Staff Members and Faculty Members from the Department of Radiology at MSK. Essays will receive several rounds of review before the final selection is made. 80% of the score will be based on the essay and 20% on the video. -The winning essay will be published on the internal MSK Department of Radiology website. Students participate in a hands-on Ultrasound demonstration and healthcare information sessions at the 2014 program Eligibility for Participation 1. Students must be juniors with a demonstrated interest in sciences (i.e. medicine, biomedical research, health sciences, health occupations). 2. Students must be in good academic standing. 3. Students must research, compose and submit an essay on the radiology topic: Imagine a World without Radiology. Students must submit the essay using the online application form. 3 4. In addition, students must submit a video using the online application form, describing why they want to participate in a paid summer internship. The video can be up to 90 seconds. Please see the guidelines below. Prizes and Certificates 1. The winning essays and summer internships will be awarded during the event at MK on Tuesday May 26, Cash prizes will be awarded to the top five winning essays and video blogs (combined). 3. An opportunity to participate in a one-month paid summer internship will be awarded to each of the top five winners. 4. Students must be present in order to receive the awards. 5. All students in attendance at the event on May 26, 2015 will receive a certificate of participation and gifts. Participants at the 2014 event Essay Requirements This year s topic: Imagine a World without Radiology 1. Essays must be typed, double-spaced, on one-sided white, 8.5 by 11-inch paper with all margins set at 1 inch each, and in Arial 12-point font. 2. The essay must be well-organized and well-reasoned, and contain no more than 1,000 words. 3. Essays must include standardized citations and a bibliography (these are not included in the 1,000-word count). 4. Essays must have at least two different sources; the sources should not be only from the Internet. 3

4 5. Essays should have a header containing the name of student, school and date. 6. Essays should have a footer with page numbers. (American Society of Radiologic Technologists) The Association for Radiologic & Imaging Nursing (ARIN) (American Association of Physicists in Medicine) Video Blog Requirements This year s topic: Why I Want to Participate in a Summer Internship? 1. The 90-second video blog should describe who you are, where you go to school, your interest in science and medicine, and why you want to participate in a paid summer internship. 2. The summer internships will be located at either MSK or The City College of New York Group picture and interactive feedback session with students and chaperones 4

5 Helpful Hints in Developing the Essay The essay should contain: 1. An introduction, which presents an idea, and states a position. The objective is to demonstrate that the writer understands the essay topic and has formed a response to it. 2. A body, which expands on the ideas presented in the introduction. This section should include supporting ideas with specific evidence such as facts and statistics, examples and illustrations and citations of expert opinions. 3. A conclusion, which summarizes the ideas /research presented in the essay and sets forth a conclusion. Drawing on ideas already presented, the essay should demonstrate that the conclusion supports the position put forward in the opening paragraphs. The aim is to convince the reader that the position is reasonable and valid. 4. A bibliography, which lists the works referred to in the essay or consulted in order to write the essay. The bibliography should include more than one source, for example a research article and an Internet source. Guidelines for Submitting *Up to Eight (8) students may be selected from each school.
