College Report December 2017 Patty Erjavec, PhD, President Transform the student experience Holiday support Panther generosity was on display Nov. 14 as nearly 400 Thanksgiving food baskets, valued at approximately $9,000, were collected to be given to PCC students. Each department, division and branch campus did its part to help make sure all Panthers have a wonderful holiday. The Business and Advanced Technology division took top prize this year its third win by collecting 97 bags for the cause. In honor of the BAT division, President Patty Erjavec and her husband, Ray, made a personal donation of $1,300 that will be used to stock the Panther Student Pantries on each PCC campus. Southwest Subarus Students from the Southwest Campus Automotive Service Technology program have two new Subarus on which to train. They're the latest addition to the program thanks to PCC's participation in Subaru U, the auto company's web-based training program. AST students on all campuses receive the training at no additional cost; upon graduation, they are certified to work at any Subaru facility. The late-model cars are provided by Subaru so students will be able to work on the latest technology.
New Student Studio The New Student Studio on the Pueblo campus officially opened Nov. 3. Director of Recruitment Chase Watts welcomed faculty and staff to show off the great space and explain how this resource is helping turn potential Panthers into PCC students. Fremont fall celebration The Fremont Campus held its Fall Fest on Nov. 17, welcoming students, staff and the community. Everyone enjoyed food, drinks and games, including mini bike races, a scavenger hunt and a maze before heading off for Thanksgiving break. Cyber defense designation Tim Gama, director of PCC s Cyber Security program, received the program s Center of Academic Excellence designation certificate at the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education conference in Ohio. PCC is the only twoyear accredited program in southern Colorado.
Illustrator speaks Illustrator Benjamin Hummel spoke to an appreciative crowd of PCC Art, Graphic Design, History and Early Childhood Education students Nov. 9 in advance of a book signing for "Lights On! Ike Hoover Electrifies the White House." Hummel illustrated the children s book, which was written by the late Cynthia Simmelink Becker, a longtime supporter of PCC. Hummel explained his step-by-step illustration process and the details associated with each action. Microbiology presentation Microbiologist Troy Couch, owner of Vaccinology Consulting, was the featured presenter for PCC s Stars of STEM speaker series in November. Couch spent nine years as senior director of Vaccines Global Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls with Pfizer. He was responsible for supporting the company s vaccine development programs.
Transform our own workforce experience Ethics champion Accounting faculty member Tene Greenhood has been named an ethics champion by the Daniels Fund Ethics Initiative at the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs. She attended a workshop at UCCS to learn about principle-based ethics curriculum and will promote that on the PCC campus through instruction and events. President Erjavec honored PCC President Patty Erjavec was honored Nov. 9 as one of the 2017 Women of Influence by the Colorado Springs Business Journal. She was recognized at a luncheon in Colorado Springs. The Journal also published a profile of each honoree. Faculty playwright PCC English faculty member Jamie Patti has co-written a play with Chris Willard that will be produced in December by the Breckenridge Backstage Theater. A Rocky Mountain Christmas is about members of a mountain community
who are brought together by a surprise snow storm. The play will run from Dec This is the seventh play by Patti and Willard that has been professionally produced. Create education without barriers through partnerships Community contribution When the Pueblo County Historical Society needed to replace the original gates at the east entrance of Pueblo City Park, Welding Program Manager Catlin Davis got the call. Last semester, he and students in his Welding 250 class created new gates that closely replicate the original ones. Automotive Service Technology Department Chair James Cordova painted the gates. Their work will be on display for years to come. Welding program honored The PCC SkillsUSA Welding Club was recognized on opening night of the 25 th annual Pueblo Zoo ElectriCritters light display. PCC instructors and students have contributed to the popular holiday tradition for many years by building the frames for each new display. Raise value standards through excellence & accessibility Parade of Lights President Erjavec, students and employees took part in Pueblo s 28 th annual Parade of Lights on Nov. 25. PCC s Center for New Media again broadcast and livestreamed the parade to Puebloans and PCC s social media followers. Culinary Arts fundraiser Big Bear Wine & Liquor, Anheuser-Busch, Breckenridge Brewery and the PCC Culinary Arts program collaborated to offer a superb dinner to Puebloans while benefitting PCC. The Big Bear Brew Fest Beer Dinner was held on campus Nov. 17. A multi-course meal was created by Anheuser-Busch Corporate Chef Sam Niemann, assisted by PCC students; each course was paired with a beer from Breckenridge Brewery, whose brewer discussed the reasons behind each pairing. For
the second consecutive year, Big Bear generously donated all proceeds from the dinner to the Culinary Arts program. Winter clothing drive The PS Care Club (Psychology and Social Work: Careers and Resources for Education) collected winter clothing to donate to children in need. Members distributed the clothes in person to Pueblo families.
