1 Munich-Berlin Middle East Summer School [August 3-24, 2018] We are pleased to welcome students to the Munich International Summer University (MISU) in Germany. The program takes place under the auspices of: Middle East and International Affairs Research Group (MEIA Research) Center for Applied Policy Research (CAP) at LMU Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies (LMU) During the 2018 Munich-Berlin Middle East Summer School, students will be provided with a broad understanding of the key political, economic, and societal developments in the contemporary Middle East. In the seminars, students will be taught by academics and practitioners with long-standing academic and professional experience in the Middle East. The Munich International Summer University is based on an interdisciplinary approach. It combines different methodologies such as lectures, discussions, groupwork and students' presentations along with excursions to meet professionals from the field. Werner Weidenfeld Director of Center for Applied Policy Research (CAP) Coordinating Institutions Research and instruction within the Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies (INMO) at LMU revolves around the languages, cultures, and literature of the Islamic world in the past and present. The focus thereby is on sources in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish. In chronological terms, INMO addresses everything from Late Antiquity to the present; in geographical terms, INMO covers a region stretching from Spain to Central Asia, from the Balkans to Egypt and North Africa. Research is conducted within five research groups and a number of individual projects. The degrees offered include both the bachelor s and master s programs in Near and Middle Eastern Studies and a variety of doctoral programs. The institute s reference library is available to all interested scholars. The Center for Applied Policy Research (C A P) is a renowned university based institution in Germany for political advising on national, European, and international issues. It was founded in 1995 as a home for practice oriented research, aligned with the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (LMU). The C A P draws its operating funds from projects and partnerships with foundations, government institutions, and private corporations. The Center brings together academic expertise in order to work out strategies and options for current political issues. The Center s research groups and projects combine international and interdisciplinary analysis with concrete suggestions for political strategy and practice. The Middle East and International Affairs Research Group (MEIA Research) seeks to strengthen international interaction and understanding and to improve political, economic, cultural, academic, and societal relations between Europe, North Africa, the Near East, and the Gulf region. MEIA Research focuses on improving relations between Germany and the countries of the larger Middle East, reflecting their pivotal economic and growing political leadership roles in their respective regions. To this end, MEIA Research is developing cooperation projects with institutions in several countries of the region. Founded in Munich in 2012 by a group of researchers, consultants, and trainers, each one with an international academic background as well as special interests and 2

3 practical experience in the Middle East, MEIA Research offers a fresh and independent approach to the field of international and intercultural relations. MEIA Research focuses particularly on the interaction and cooperation among young leaders in Europe and the Middle East. By organizing and hosting dialogue conferences, round tables, and other activities, MEIA Research provides a forum for discussion and intellectual exchange. In addition, MEIA Research engages actively in the public debate and informs both the general public and decision makers through in-depth academic analyses. Academic Coordinator LUDWIG SCHULZ Ludwig Schulz is a member of the board of MEIA Research. He runs the Middle East Program of the Center for Applied Policy Research (C.A.P.) at LMU, and works for the German Orient Institute Berlin (DOI) as co-head of the editorial office of the ORIENT, Germany's oldest scientific journal on the Middle East. In 2009, Mr. Schulz graduated from LMU with a Magister Artium (M.A.) degree in Political Science and International Relations, History and Culture of the Near and Middle East/Turcology, and European Law. In his research, various projects, and numerous publications, Mr. Schulz focuses primarily on Turkey s domestic policy, foreign, and societal affairs. Mr. Schulz gives regular lectures on Turkey and Middle East politics at academic and civic education institutions in Germany and abroad. His projects and activities brought him to many countries in the MENA region such as Algeria, Tunisia, Israel, and the Gulf countries. Furthermore, at C.A.P., he manages the Bavarian-Tunisian project "Political consultancy and strategy development" in cooperation with Tunisian partners. Academic Information Target Group The program targets both advanced students and young professionals with various backgrounds. Applicants should have a general interest in foreign policy, economics, and societal developments and be willing to participate in an interdisciplinary and intercultural learning process. In-depth knowledge of Middle Eastern affairs is not required. In-class participation, especially in the discussions with experts as well as in the simulation that is part of the program, is essential for the course success and plays an important role in grading. 3

4 Lectures, presentations and examinations will be held in English. Knowledge of German is not a required. Grades Grades are defined from the Academic Board of LMU Munich according to the general grading system of LMU. 5 Credit The Academic Board of the MISU defines the requirements and contact hours (1 contact hour comprises 45 minutes) for successful completion of the courses as follows: regular attendance (max. 2 days of absence) oral presentation essay of 3,500-4,000 words (deadline: 30 September 2018) preparation for and active participation in the seminars participation in and contribution to class excursions self-study and homework assignments Transcripts Every student will receive an official transcript after the successful completion of all program requirements. The transcript will show the course name and contact hours, the number of acquired credits as well as the achieved grades. 5

6 General Information Program Transfers The program organizes a train transfer from and to Berlin Housing Arrival in Munich: 2 August 2018 Departure from Munich: 26 August 2018 Housing in Munich LMU Munich offers accommodation for the participants in student residential halls of the Studentenwerk München. Each student is accommodated in his or her own private room. Most apartments are equipped with kitchenettes. Housing in Berlin In Berlin, students will be accommodated in 4-bed rooms at the Youth hostel. More details will be sent 1 months in advance. Subway, Bus, Tram Participants have to purchase tickets on the day of arrival on their own. Detailed information will be given in advance. Board During your stay in both cities, students are responsible for providing their own meals. Lunch can be purchased for 5-7 everywhere. In Munich all students get access to the student cafeteria Mensa. In Munich the kitchens in student residences can also be used for the preparation of meals. You will also have a fridge to store food in. 6

7 Service VISA After successful application and payment of complete fees, applicants receive an invitation letter from the MISU program. This letter entitles students to apply for a Schengen tourist visa for the duration of the program. Note: Please start the visa application process at least 3 months in advance! Health Insurance During your stay in Europe and, if applicable, for the visa application process, students need German-approved health insurance coverage. If accommodation was booked, the deposit for the rent may not be refunded. Cancellation 4 weeks before commencement of the course: The registration fee is not refundable. If accommodation was booked, the deposit for the rent may not be refunded and 50% of the course deposit fees may not be refunded. Cancellation 1 day before commencement of the course: The registration fee is not refundable.
