6 Excellence Initiative Background to the Excellence Initiative LMU was the most successful participant in both rounds of the nationwide Excellence Initiative. The aim of the Excellence Initiative, instigated by the Federal and State Governments, is to promote top-level research at German universities: In the first round of the program, comprising two grant periods (2006 / ), a total of 1.9 billion euros was provided to the successful competitors. A total of 2.7 billion euros is being made available for the second phase ( ). 8 Studies Studium Studium Study Programs an der LMU at LMU Munich Zukunftsorientiert, Forward-looking, weltoffen, cosmopolitan, kreativ creative LMU offers its 49,000 students a first-rate academic education. From Art History to Zoology with some 150 degree courses, LMU s academic curriculum covers an enormous range, offering a wide variety of subject combinations and interdisciplinary perspectives. Life on campus at LMU has an international flavor, with some 14% of students coming from abroad. Moreover, each year over 700 students make use of LMU s worldwide network of contacts and spend time at one of its partner universities. 9 Studies Study Programs at LMU research-oriented, focused on practical goals As a renowned European research university, LMU strives to confront students with research issues in their fields at an early stage and spark an active interest in research methods and standards. Innovative teaching concepts are being developed which will integrate current research problems and practice even more systematically than before. As a leading center of business, the media and culture, Munich provides an ideal environment for collaborations with research partners such as the Max Planck Society and its Institutes, as well as museums, libraries, public collections, media concerns and publishing houses. 10 Studies an integrated program of measures to enhance the study conditions has three major objectives: To strengthen the focus on research and its practical application by developing integrative teaching models. To improve targeted mentoring and counseling services for students, so as to further their academic and professional development. To design further-education programs for academic and advisory personnel, as well as training students for tutorial roles, that equip them to achieve the first two aims. LMU will use resources provided by the Pact for Quality in Teaching initiated by the German Government to implement the complete program: From 2012 until 2016, a total 23 million euros will be devoted to Lehre@LMU.
