Membership in Professional Associations National Communication Association Southern States Communication Association TEACHING (Undergraduate Level Courses) Introduction to American Cultural Studies: (Approximately 19 students per class) A survey course that is required for all undergrads. Students were introduced to American history from the perspective of Howard Zinn and the ideas of Theroeau and Emerson. Racism, sexism, and American exceptionalism are some of the key ideas introduced in this introductory level course. Required texts included novels and primary documents in addition to traditional textbooks. Fundamentals of Public Speaking: (Approximately 25 students per class.) Covered theories and skills related to successful communication in the public context. Assisted students with the development and performance of informative, persuasive, special occasion speeches. Projects utilized Microsoft Word and Power Point to develop outlines and sensory aids for presentations. Communication between Cultures: (Approximately 30 students per class.) Explored communicative situations commonly encountered in cultural and intercultural settings, with a specific focus on how individuals create, re-create and sustain social reality through communicative acts in socially constructed realities.
