1 2015 Postgraduate Orientation Welcome Programme Welcome from the Dean of Graduate Studies On behalf of the School of Graduate Studies I am delighted to welcome you as you take the first steps of your postgraduate career at the University of Auckland - New Zealand s world-ranked university*. I encourage you to make the most of the opportunities for professional development so that upon completion you will be a successful, confident, global citizen. Get amongst it and involved At the University of Auckland you ll not only get a top academic experience, you ll get a fantastic social experience too! You ll have the chance to try new things, meet new people and make friends and memories that will last a lifetime. You could get involved with the Postgraduate Students Association (PGSA). You might also want to compete in the Poetry Slam, have a go at the Great Waka Ama Race or check out the University Comedy on night. Find out what s on at the University at Postgraduate Students Association (PGSA) Get involved with the Postgraduate Students Association (PGSA). The PGSA is an incorporated society dedicated to strengthening the postgraduate community at the University of Auckland through both social and educational events. The Association is run by a Board of postgraduate representatives from each faculty across the University. Highlights from last year include educational events such as speaking events, writing retreats, car servicing workshops and opportunities to engage with University of Auckland officials. In addition the PGSA sponsored social functions such as climbing Rangitoto, road trips to Tongariro and Rotorua, volunteer opportunities on Waiheke, PGSA-sponsored sports teams, learning to kitesurf and various on-campus social events. 2 Seminars for all postgraduate students Keynote seminar Rapid reading by Nick Read 10am-12pm Lecture Theatre, Library Lib B15, General Library, City You will never read as much as you do during your university years. You will never study as much nor be asked to recall so much as you do now. Using the principles of power reading you can easily double your reading speed and improve your comprehension. This short workshop will provide some tips to improve your reading and comprehension. Please register to attend this session at Other seminars Postgraduate support services 1-2pm Library, City Hosted by the School of Graduate Studies, this session details the services available to all postgraduate students, how the Graduate Centre offers support and where students can go for more information throughout their studies. There will be members of staff from the following key support areas: AUSA Student Advice Hub Career Development and Employment Services DELNA (Diagnostic English Language Needs Assessment) ELE (English Language Enrichment) Graduate Centre Libraries and Learning Services Scholarships Student Events Come and meet the staff who can help you with your studies, ask questions and take away important information. All postgraduate students are welcome to attend this, even if you are not a new student. Getting to grips with postgraduate study Student Learning Services pm Library, City This session will help you plan your year so that you can cope with the demands of postgraduate study at a research-led university. We will cover the essential aspects of both taught postgraduate courses and independent research for dissertations and theses. By embarking on postgraduate study you will acquire specialist knowledge, enhance your research skills and engage with both theory and practice: this session will ensure you know how to make the most of these opportunities. Sell your brand to employers Career Development and Employment Services pm Library, City Do you know what your brand is? Can you explain your brand to employers? At this seminar, find out what employers look for in applicants and how to market yourself as a desirable brand in an increasingly competitive environment. PGSA student panel pm Library, City The PGSA student panel is an excellent opportunity for new postgraduate students to ask questions about everything they would like to know about being a student at the University of Auckland. An introduction to the three keys to getting your message across clearly and concisely. Structuring your presentations to have maximum impact. Making sure you engage with your audience in order to get them to take action. Please register to attend at Doctoral morning tea 10-11am Strata Postgraduate Lounge, Level 4, Kate Edger Information Commons, 2 Alfred Street, City A monthly event for all doctoral students, the doctoral morning tea allows you to meet and mingle with other doctoral students in a relaxed environment and keep up-to-date on applicable information. There are also informative guest speakers presenting on topics relevant to the life of a doctoral student. There will be food, refreshments and music. This is a great opportunity to meet other postgrads from faculties across the University and have a fun evening. Start of Semester One School of Chemical Sciences Our Postgraduate Orientation is an informal way of welcoming new postgraduate students (PGDipSci, BSc(Hons), MSc and PhD students) to the school, this is also an occasion to meet key members of staff. Department of Computer Science Students enrolled in BSc(Hons), PGDip and MSc programmes in Computer Science are warmly invited to attend an informal orientation lunch and information session. School of Environment Monday 2 March, 12noon Lecture Theatre HSB370, Human Sciences Building, 10 Symonds Street, City For all students enrolling for the first time in any of the school s postgraduate programmes in Geography, Earth Science, Environmental Science and Environmental Management at the masters, honours and postgraduate diploma levels. It is designed for students to learn about the school, its staff and facilities. The event concludes with lunch, where students can meet and mingle with fellow students and school staff. Institute of Marine Science PGDipSci students are invited to attend a lunch meeting at the City at the beginning of Semester One. Invitations will be sent directly to enrolled Department of Mathematics Students enrolled in either BSc(Hons), PGDipSci or MSc programmes in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/Maths Education are warmly invited to attend an informal Orientation lunch and information session. Department of Physics First week of Semester One We invite all BSc(Hons), PGDipSci and MSc students in the Department of Physics to attend our Welcome Event. You can get acquainted with your fellow students, and meet with potential supervisors and key research faculty. Learn how the department operates, what resources are available, and who you should speak with to make your study and research in Physics successful. Free pizza for lunch. Invitations including date and location will be sent at an upcoming time. School of Psychology Second week of Semester One The School of Psychology offers an information and welcome session for new postgraduate Students accepted into postgraduate programmes will be sent an invitation to this event prior to the start of semester. Department of Statistics First week of Semester One A welcome presentation and social event for all students undertaking postgraduate study in statistics. It is an opportunity to meet other new and existing postgraduate students and be welcomed by our postgraduate advisers and staff. A range of speakers introduce the services we offer to our postgraduate students: access to postgraduate lab, print quota, lockers, safety, computers and printers, Student Learning Services, specialist librarian, high performance computing, scholarships and career planning. Recent statistics graduates talk about their study and work experience and join current students and staff for food and drinks. Each student will be provided with a welcome and information pack.
