Maximum award $2,000 of which 25% is to be used as supplemental research funds; half of the total award is provided to the student and the other half to his/her advisor s F&A account. Two areas of research emphasis: 1) clinical transformation research and 2) clinical research 2 clinical transformation research awards per year each up to $12,000; 2 clinical research awards per year each up to $12,000. 11 SOM AND WSU HAVE EFFECTIVE FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS WHICH NURTURE, SUPPORT AND OPTIMIZE RESEARCH CAREER DEVELOPMENT, RECOGNIZING TRANSITIONS THAT OCCUR ACROSS PROFESSIONAL CAREERS 1) All departments/schools have formal mentoring programs with chair accountability within the broader SOM/WSU faculty mentoring programs. 2) Mentoring programs explicitly recognize and incorporate team science mentoring. 3) Academic tracks and promotion and tenure criteria designed for team scientists and clinician scientists 4) Faculty careers are supported across the professional lifespan

12 TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH AT THE SOM IS WELL SUPPORTED, WELL UNDERSTOOD WITH THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN FIELDS OF RESEARCH AND CLINICAL SUPPORT CLEARLY DESCRIBED 1) Faculty and trainees are well-informed about and have easy access to resources supporting translational research. 1) Hospitals and other health organizations serve as active research partners. 2) A primary role of Key Core Facilities is support of Translational Research. 3) SOM Master and PHD curricula in the basic sciences clearly address clinical implications of these fields of study

14 THE WSU RESEARCH PORTFOLIO IS CHARACTERIZED BY A SERIES OF OVERLAPPING SCIENTIFIC TEAMS 1) Strong individually funded research mentored by research teams is critical to the development of successful PP(L)Gs. 2) Department chairs support the interdisciplinary (interdepartmental) collaborations through financial support. 3) The SOM and WSU support selected PP(L)Gs through additional financial support and administrative support
