3 2014 GRADUATING SENIORS DE ANDRE BEADLE Research mentor: Belinda Davis, Ph.D. Educational Outcomes of Immigrant Students Influenced by Their Ability to Access the Social Capital within Their Community; African Americans and Trust in Government De Andre was recognized as one of the LSU Tiger Twelve. He will attend graduate school at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in the Department of Sociology-Criminal Justice Systems where he was awarded a graduate assistantship. ARIELLE BROWN Research mentors: Cassandra Chaney, Ph.D., Stephen Finley, Ph.D., Joyce Jackson, Ph.D. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome and its Application to African American Undergraduates; Is Black Motherhood A Marker of Oppression or Empowerment? Hip-Hop and R&B Lessons about Mama. Arielle was recognized with the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, College of Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Excellence Award, and was named one of the LSU Tiger Twelve. She will pursue a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign where she was awarded fellowships and assistantships totaling over $55,800 per year. HAYATO DESOUZA Research mentor: Michael J. Martin, Ph.D. Hayato will present research at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Conference. Before continuing to graduate school, he will strengthen his command of the Japanese language by teaching English in Japan.

4 LE KENDRA FUSILIER Research mentor: Mileva Radonjic, Ph.D. The Experimental Study of the Effects of Shear Stress and Drilling Fluid Contamination on the Integrity of the Cement-Formation Interface CASEY DUVALL Research mentor: Arthur Penn, Ph.D. The Effects of Early-life Second-hand Smoke Exposure on Adult Susceptibility to Bacterial Infection of the Lungs Casey was a member of the LSU Gymnastics team that ranked third in the NCAA Super Six Finals, earning the highest team finish in LSU history. She is applying to medical school for fall FRANSHETTA HIBBLER Research mentor: Chris Branton, Ph.D., Ciara Foster Application for Basic Learning and Education (ABLE) Franshetta has applied to a number of Louisiana institutions and is eagerly waiting their responses. DERRICK LATHAN Research mentor: Stephen Finley, Ph.D. Stereotypes and Representations of Black Males in the Media Derrick is a talented artist who is devoted to community service. He co-founded the LSU Black Student Artist Collective and is a mentor to the LSU Upward Bound, an outreach program for precollege students who would be the first in their family to attend college. He will pursue a Ph.D. in sociology at LSU and has been awarded a tuition fellowship from the graduate school.

5 CHARLES LEWIS Research mentor: Craig Hart, Ph.D. FRAP Analysis of BEAF-32A and BEAF-32B Charles will pursue a Doctor of Dental Medicine at Boston University. He was awarded the U.S. Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program and is a recipient of the U.S. Armed Forces HPSP Scholarship, which will cover the tuition and fees of dental school. MARKITA LEWIS Research mentors: Carol J. Lammi-Keefe, PhD, RD and Holiday A. Durham, PhD, RD Cross-Sectional Analysis of Obesity and Serum Analytes in Males Identifies srage as a Novel Biomarker Inversely Associated with Diverticulosis; Increased Dietary Docosahexaenoic Acid Consumption and Its Effect on Macular Pigment Optical Density: The Eye Health in College-Age Students III Pilot Study Markita has garnered many honors during her undergraduate career, most recently the Louisiana Dietetic Association Irene Toliver Pyburn Merit Award, Huel D. Perkins Leadership Award, a publication in a national research journal, and she was a member of the LSU Discover Student Advisory Board. She will pursue a M.S. in nutrition and dietetics at the University of Georgia where she was awarded full tuition and fees and a $22,000 peryear stipend. YVONNE THOMPSON Research mentor: Anna Long, Ph.D. Implementation Intention s Effect on Treatment Integrity to a Classroom Management System Yvonne is a community service leader in her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. She was recognized as the Iota Thea Volunteer of the Year and Mentor of the Year. She will pursue a graduate degree in social work and is currently considering offers from a variety of graduate schools.

MCNAIR POSTBACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM promotes a new cohort of scholars that more accurately reflects the emergent diversity in life experiences, cultures and perspectives represented in academia by preparing students who are first generation, low-income, and underrepresented in graduate education for doctoral studies. McNair Research Scholars provides thirty sophomore, junior and senior college students from Louisiana State University with information and experiences to prepare them to be competitive graduate school applications and successful graduate students.
