1 COVER 28th Annual WV Addiction Training Institute June 12-14, 2017 Lakeview Resort and Conference Center Morgantown, WV Sponsored by West Virginia University Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry Course Description The 28th Annual West Virginia Addiction Training Institute (ATI) features current developments within the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual areas of substance use disorder behavior. Special topics for 2017 include: medication assisted treatment, mindfulness, process addictions, collegiate recovery, sex workers and addiction, pornography addiction, infectious disease risks, LGBTQ risk factors and substances of abuse in the prison system. This course is designed for new and experienced professionals who are seeking a thorough review of both the established fundamentals of addiction and current approaches to working with the behavioral addictions and the substance use disorders population. The training is valuable for those working or planning to work in the areas of mental health, addictions counseling, courts and corrections, school counseling, nursing and psychology. Course Objectives The goals of the ATI are to assist professionals in examining the increasing issues of addiction in the state; provide an up-to-date look at treatment strategies; and in turn add to their repertoire of effective therapeutic techniques in working with individuals, family, and community members affected by the disease of addiction. Following this course, participants should be able to: describe the neural circuitry in the brain involved with addiction discuss the effects stigma has had particularly with methadone describe the epidemiology of the prescription opioid epidemic identify the clinical presentation of process addictions discuss evidence-based approaches to treating behavioral addictions describe the link between ACEs and physical and mental illness in adults discuss the applications of mindfulness in the treatment of physical and mental illnesses Course Information Preregistration for the Addiction Training Institute is required by June 8, 2017 with the WVU Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry Conference Office.
