3 We have recently seen huge technical advances resulting in the sequencing of the genomes of hundreds of species, including that of humans; the development of synthetic organisms; and a recognition that the global climate is changing. This places biological and biomedical scientists at the centre of research that directly affects the future of humanity. UR STUDENTS It s really current, all the experiments and things that we are learning are happening right now. The goal of bioscientists is to explore and explain the basic processes of life, from molecules and cells to communities of organisms. They study life processes to gain an understanding of health and disease. At Durham we carry out research that tackles global challenges, including feeding an increasing human population, healthy ageing, supplying sustainable energy, response to climate change and the conservation of biodiversity. Placements are invaluable... I can finish my degree and be in an interview and say - yes, I ve already been doing it for a year. 6 A broad student experience UR STAFF Biosciences courses at Durham employ a range of teaching and learning approaches, including lectures, workshops, practical classes and tutorials. ur teaching is research-led, drawing on active research programmes both locally in Durham and in collaboration around the world. In addition to formal teaching, during your course you will gain hands-on experience through class practicals, with options for project work and field courses to exciting locations. students may undertake one of the following between their second and final years; either a 40-week placement in one of a range of companies and organisations, or an academic year spent at a partner University overseas as an International Exchange. In their final year, our 3 year degrees require students to take one of our field courses or workshops, and a Research Module selected from a lab-based project, Biological Enterprise, Biology into Schools, or Science and ommunication. Dr. arrie Ambler I m interested in how stem cells in the skin allow it to grow and regenerate after wounding and in disease. Students taking the 4 year Masters in Bioscience course have the opportunity to pursue an extended research project, integrated into the School s research programmes, which would be ideal preparation for those interested in research at postgraduate level.
