1 Community Service Information We at OHMMHS believe community service is an important component of a rigorous education. Serving as a volunteer does the following: 1) Develops strong character and a sense of responsibility 2) Exposes students to a variety of career options 3) Provides a means for students to make a positive impact in their community Students are required to complete 100 hours of community service prior to graduation from OHMMHS. The 100 hours may be served any time during the years students attend OHMMHS. Students are encouraged to choose a form of community service that interests them and affords an opportunity to learn and enjoy as well as help others. Acceptable Service Hours Work with NON-PROFIT health agencies (working with patients or office staff) Example: Orthopaedic Hospital or their clinics Work with any NON-PROFIT organization that helps people in need. Example: Red Cross, Salvation Army, YMCA Work with any community service organization. Example: Boys and Girls Club, Parks and Recreation, tutoring for elementary or middle school students NON-Acceptable Service Hours Political campaigns or elections Profit Organizations (Organizations that make money) Religious organizations PRIOR to starting volunteer hours of community service, students need to verify acceptability with the Magnet Coordinator and pick up a log sheet* to keep track of the hours worked. After completing the required community service hours, students must have the supervisor complete the OHMMHS Service Report Form. *Available in the Main Office or online at orthohighschool.org under Student Resources

3 Community Service Form The requirement of one hundred hours of community service may be served at any time during the student s high school career here at OHMMHS. Students are encouraged to choose a form of community service that interests them and affords an opportunity to learn and enjoy while helping others. Before undertaking any service work, students must get approval from the Magnet Coordinator to ensure that the service activity selected meets the acceptable service criteria. Once community service hours are completed, the following form must be completed by the supervisor.
