2 Course Description The purpose of this seminar is to provide information to Mayo residents and fellows to successfully transition from a training program to a clinical or academic practice. The curriculum for this program will include topics such as employment contracts, disability insurance, personal financial management and debt management, use of recruitment specialists, interviewing skills and career development. Intended Audience This program targets residents and fellows in their final two years of training and their spouses. Dahlen is the Director of Financial Aid and Registrar for Mayo Foundation. Mr. Dahlen has worked in student financial planning for the past 14 years. He is a graduate of Bemidji State University and holds a Master s of Science degree from Iowa State University. Mr. Dahlen has been active in training and support of other financial aid professionals and has served on the board of the Midwest Association of Financial Aid Administrators and has held many elected positions in the Minnesota Association of Financial Aid Administrators including president in Paul R. Iverson Paul R. Iverson has been a financial planner in the Office of Staff Services since Prior to joining Mayo, he was a medical management consultant with Professional Management Midwest for six years. Mr. Iverson received a BBA in Accounting from the University of Iowa in Kyle J. Kircher, M.D. Dr. Kyle J. Kircher, Medical Director for both Mayo Family Clinic Northwest and Mayo Family Clinic Northeast, is a consultant in the Department of Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. In 1998 he completed the Family Medicine Fellowship Program at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, with an emphasis in practice management. Dr. Kircher completed the MBA

3 program at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota, in Dr. Kircher has served as Assistant Medical Director for Mayo Management Services, Inc., and Medical Director for Ask Mayo Clinic Nurse Triage Line. Kathleen A. Meyerle, J.D. Kathleen A. Meyerle joined the Mayo Foundation Legal Department in She obtained her law degree from William Mitchell College of Law and her undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from the University of Nebraska. Her practice areas include drug and device law, research ethics and regulation, professional practice regulation, health plan regulation and contracting. She teaches the medical-legal course at Mayo Medical School and is a past chair of the State of Minnesota Judicial Selection Commission. Ms. Meyerle is active in community activities including initiatives supporting higher education in Rochester and Boy Scouting. John S. Shonyo John S. Shonyo is an administrator with Mayo Health System. He is Director of Physician Services for MHS and also is the administrator for EnhanceMed, Mayo s moonlighting services. He started his career at Mayo in January of 1999 as section head for Salary Administration. He has over 25 years of health care human resources and operations experience. He graduated from Moorhead State University, Moorhead, Minnesota, with degrees in Mass Communications and Sociology. He is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). Thomas R. Viggiano, M.D., M.Ed. Dr. Thomas R. Viggiano is a consultant in the Department of Gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, and Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Viggiano served as Assistant Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program, Mayo Clinic, and as Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Mayo Medical School, prior to his appointment in 2001 as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Mayo Medical School. Dr. Viggiano currently serves on several Mayo Foundation committees including the Academic Appointments and Promotions Committee, the Career and Leadership Development Committee and the Medical School Education Committee.

Meyerle, J.D. Session Description: This presentation describes terms and conditions of a typical physician employment contract with lists of issues to consider in negotiating an employment contract. Practical suggestions will be provided on approaching the contract negotiation. 1) Define the terms found most often in employment contracts 2) Identify a list of employment conditions of highest priority to the individual's goals 3) Decide when legal counsel should be retained 7:10 p.m. Breakout Sessions I DEBT MANAGEMENT David L. Dahlen and Kyle J. Kircher, M.D. Session Description: This session will assist participants in successfully managing their own student loan debt and preparing for their children s college costs in the future. Topics include loan repayment, the realities of capitalization of interest, and student loan consolidation. Additional information will be included on college savings plans for children. 1) Understand educational debt repayment 2) Understand the hidden costs of capitalization of interest 3) Determine if consolidation is a good option 4) Discuss basic college savings plans for children PRACTICE SEARCH TIPS FOR RESIDENTS John S. Shonyo Session Description: This session will cover topics such as best practices for identifying practice opportunities, expectations for site visits when interviewing, interview issues and compensation. 1) Identify resources for practice opportunities based on individual needs 2) Define typical interviewing practices and expectations 3) Identify resources for determining market-based physician compensation PERSONAL SECURITY INSURANCE Paul R. Iverson Session Description: This presentation describes resources available for residents and fellows to determine their best options regarding life, health and disability insurance, general liability, interruption of business coverage, workers compensation and other specialtyspecific insurance coverage. 1) Define types of insurance and terms found most often in insurance policies 2) Identify ways to identify and compare insurance options 3) Evaluate what types of insurance are needed and when they need to be in effect STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS IN THE PROFESSION OF MEDICINE Thomas R. Viggiano, M.D., M.Ed. Session Description: Success is finding meaning and fulfillment in our personal and professional lives. Caring for and managing your professional life requires thoughtful consideration of lifestyle, family and career demands.
