Alice Seagren was appointed by Governor Tim Pawlenty as the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) in July As Commissioner, she is responsible for MDE operations and policymaking for all aspects of K-12 education, implementing the No Child Left Behind Act in Minnesota, early learning, libraries, and adult, career and technical education. Prior to her appointment, she served six terms in the Minnesota House of Representatives. During her legislative career she was Chair of the House Education Finance Committee and also a member of the Education Policy, Ways and Means, Transportation, Judiciary and State Government Policy committees. Before winning election to the Legislature, she served on the Bloomington School Board and has been a volunteer in her church and in the community. Representative Seagren served as Chair of the Education Committee for the National Council of State Legislatures, reflecting her commitment to education and helping people become self-sufficient. She is currently a board member of the Normandale Community College Foundation Board and Fraser Community Services, an organization providing services to people with disabilities. On the national level, she serves as a Commissioner on the Education Commission of the States and is an active member of the Council of Chief State School Officers, serving as co-chair of the Task Force on Teacher Development. She is also a member of several national task forces on human resource management, school improvement and standards development. Commissioner Seagren is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a B.S. in Marketing Ride with Sean and Bill to next location. 2:15 pm 3:30 pm Minnesota Minority Education Partnership Hosted by Jennifer Godinez, Associate Director and MMF Alumna Wright Building 2233 University Avenue West, Suite 220 Saint Paul, MN Tel: Minnesota Minority Education Partnership, Inc., is a nonprofit collaborative, founded in 1987, that seeks to increase the success of Students of Color and American Indian Students in Minnesota schools, colleges, and universities. Jennifer Godinez is associate director of MMEP and director of Minnesota College Access Network (MCAN), an initiative of MMEP. Prior to joining the organiztion, she served as executive director of La Escuelita, a non-profit ALC/SES after school and summer program focused solely on academic enrichment and leadership development for Latino immigrant and non-immigrant youth currently enrolled in grades 6-12 in Minneapolis schools. She has in-depth experience in youth development, college access program development and education policy development. In 2004, Godinez was appointed to serve as a commissioner on the Minnesota Out-of-School Time Commission. Jennifer serves on the Advisory Council for the new dean of the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. Godinez also co-chaired the College Access Working Group on the Minnesota P-16 Education Council. Board member experience for various educational entities includes: El Colegio Charter School, the Latino Scholarship Fund of Minnesota and Achieve! Minneapolis. At the national level, Godinez served on Excelencia en Education s Promising Practices event planning committee.
