12 Method of Instruction. Instruction will be given by lectures, reading and catechising. The lectures are intended to present all of the leading principles of the common law applicable to the subject, and the modifications of the common law by statutes, and to give illustrations of the applications of the common and statute law. Special attention is given to the statutes in force in Maryland, and to peculiarities of the law in that state, where there are such; but the reasons for these statutory modifications and local peculiarities are explained, so that the student may in a short time acquaint himself with the local peculiarities of the law in any state in which he may practice. Readings from text books will be assigned on the subjects treated of in the lectures. The catechising at each lecture will he on the subjects discussed in the preceding lecture and on the assigned readings. Classes and Examinations for Admission. The students attending the School are divided into two classes a Senior Class and a Junior Class. The subjects of study in each class are : SENIOR CLASS. First Term (Oct. to Feb.): Mercantile Law, including Insurance and Admiralty Law, Wills, Executors and Administrators, Equity Jurisprudence and Pleading and Practice in Equity, and Torts. Second Term (Feb. to June): Evidence, International Law, Constitutional Law, Absolute Eights of Persons, and Crimes.

13 JUNIOR CLASS. First Term (Oct. to Feb.): Domestic Kelations and Corporations, Personal Property and the Law of Contracts. Second Term (Feb. to June): Real Property and Leasehold Estates, Pleading and Practice at Law and in Admiralty. All students who have attended the lectures to the Junior Class will be admitted to the Senior Class. Students who have not attended the Junior Class will be admitted to the Senior Class only on examination. Such examination will be as rigorous as those given to the Junior Class, and the applicant must attain a grade of 75 out of 100 in order to be admitted to the Senior Class. This rule has been adopted because the Faculty are satisfied that students who have not made considerable progress in the law, do themselves and the Law School an injury by entering the Senior Class and attempting to graduate in one year. Examinations, Theses and Degrees. The Law School confers the degree of Bachelor of Law on students who have attended the courses of lectures to both classes, have attained the required standard at the examinations, and have submitted to the Faculty satisfactory theses. There are four examinations each session two of the Senior Class and two of the Junior Class. The examinations are by printed questions to be answered in writing. Each examination is vahied at 100. In order to graduate, the student must attain a grade of at least 300 out of the 400, which is the aggregate valuation of the four examinations. The subjects for the theses for the next session will be given to the students in November, 1880, and they will be expected

14 to hand them in to the Faculty by April 1, The attention of the students is called to the fact that the Faculty will require a high standard of excellence in the theses. The Faculty reserve to themselves the right to refuse a degree to any student writing an unsatisfactory thesis, whatever grade he may have attained at the examinations. Moot Court. The Moot Court will meet at 12 M. every Saturday during the session, and will be presided over by one of the Professors. At the beginning of the session a pamphlet will be placed in the hands of each of the students, containing statements of the cases to be argued before the Moot Court during the entire session of eight months; and students will be assigned to argue cases, several months before the argument, when that is practicable. Prizes. The Faculty will, at the close of the Session , award two prizes 1. A prize of $100 to the student attaining the highest grade in the four examinations. At the close of the Session this prize was awarded to George R. Gaither, Jr., of Baltimore. 2. A prize of $100 to the student who submits the best thesis. At the close of the Session 1879-SO this prize was awarded to William S. McClenahan, of Baltimore, by a committee con-

17 There are seven Courts in almost continuous session in Baltimore during the entire scholastic year; and students have unusual opportunities to learn the law by attendance on the Courts. Students are advised to attend the Courts when they can conveniently do so, and to give careful attention and thought to the proceedings. There is a Literary Society attached to the School, known as the Inglis Society, which is organized and conducted entirely by the students. It has been the practice heretofore for students to form Quiz Clubs, composed of from five to ten members. They can, if properly conducted, be made very improving; and students are advised to form them. Commencement. The Annual Commencement for the Session took place in the Baltimore Academy of Music at 8 P. M., May 28, There were two orations one by David Stewart of Baltimore, who was selected by the Faculty, and one by George R. Gaither, Jr., who was selected by the Class of Mr. S. Teackle Wallis, the Provost, delivered an address and conferred thejjdegrees on the graduating class. He also conferred a prize on George R. Gaither, Jr., for attaining the highest grade in the four examinations, and a prize on William S. McClenahan for submitting the best thesis. At the next commencement orations will be delivered by two members of the class one selected by the Faculty and one by the Class: degrees will be conferred on the graduates, and the prizes on those to whom they are awarded.

IS Fees and Expenses. The charge for instruction is fifty dollars for each term of four months, payable strictly in advance, or one hundred dollars for the whole session of eight months. There will be an additional charge of ten dollars to each graduate as a diploma fee. Special arrangements may be made by members of the bar or others for attending any particular part or branch of instruction, at rates of charge in proportion to the above. Board can be had in the city at prices varying from $4 to $10 per week. For further information, and for tickets of admission to the School, application may be made to PROF. JOHN P.
