This event is focused on "betweenagers," youth ages (As of January 1, 2016), and will be June at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Participants will experience the feel of a conference, while enjoying the "camp" activities Rock Springs 4-H Center has to offer. Campference will feature workshops about opportunities in the 4-H program, becoming a leader, activities to energize youth while learning healthy living skills, and how to better interact with others. Participants will meet other youth from around the State of Kansas. Last year s event was terrific and those that attended highly recommend you consider it too! Families can visit: for details and registration. Registration is due to the Douglas County Extension Office by May 16 and includes: online registration, a current Kansas 4-H Participation Form and payment. Checks should be made payable to the Douglas County Extension Council Douglas County Fair Entries Fair entry packets will be mailed by May 16. If you have not received a packet by May 23, contact the Extension office as soon as possible. Fair books are available to view online at A step by step instruction sheet for online entries can be found at Entries will only be accepted online. A computer is available at the Extension office for families without access to a computer. Contact the Extension office at to schedule an appointment to use the computer. Fair entries are due by 11:59 pm on June 30. Keep in mind the office closes at 5:00 pm on June 30. We strongly discourage families to wait until the last minute of the last day to do their fair entries. The 2016 Douglas County Fair Book is available electronically at Hard copies of the fair book are available for $ Families are asked to contact Margaret 24 hours in advance to request a book. 2 2016 County Fair Livestock Health Requirements The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has released the 2016 County Fair Livestock Health Requirements. These requirements are mandated by the KDA. All 4-H ers exhibiting livestock at the 2016 County Fair should review the requirements prior to the fair. The document is posted at under the livestock heading. Questions regarding the requirements can be directed to Roberta Wyckoff. 4-H ers with Market Livestock- Beef, Goats, Sheep, Swine, Rabbits and Poultry All 4-H ers with market beef, goats, sheep, swine, rabbits and poultry will be required to complete detailed treatment records. The record should include administration of any dewormer, antibiotic, medicated feed, etc. The treatment record form can be found at under the livestock heading. There is an Excel spreadsheet available. The forms will be due in the fair office by 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29 for all livestock sold through the premium auction and livestock that is shipped. East Central District Horse Show The East Central District 4-H Horse Show is scheduled for July 5 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. 4-H ers who are at least 9 years old as of January 1, 2016 and have horse ID papers on file are eligible to show at the district show. 4-H ers earning a blue or purple ribbon in their respective classes will qualify to show at the Kansas State Fair 4-H Horse Show. The entry deadline for the district show is June 15. Additional information about the entry process and requirements can be found at under the horse heading. 4-H ers showing at the District Horse Show are required to complete Horse Level testing by June 15. Spring Livestock Expo The Douglas County 4-H Spring Livestock Expo is scheduled for May 21 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. Pre-entries are due electronically at by May 9. Pre-entries are required to guarantee an exhibitor t-shirt. The Expo flyer including the rules can be found at Questions? Contact Roberta Wyckoff, Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent at rwyckoff@ksu.edu or Weigh-In and Tagging for Sheep, Swine and Goats May 21 during check-in for the Expo and May 23 from 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. The Details All market lambs, hogs, and goats intended to be shown at the county fair must be tagged by May 23. Each 4-H member can tag up to 5 market animals per specie for the Douglas County Fair. All livestock will be tagged with 4-H EID tags. The tags are $4 each. Make an Appointment On May 21 livestock will be weighed and tagged during the appropriate check-in times. Appointments are required for May 23. 3 Join the Fun and Learning! K-State Research and Extension Douglas County 4-H Youth Development Summer Camps The K-State Research and Extension-Douglas County 4-H Youth Development Program is excited to offer five days of summer day camp programs. Programs are for ages H membership is not required. Day camps are a safe, educational and fun environment for youth to explore a variety of 4-H project areas. We are able to offer our day camps with the help of our gracious adult and teen volunteers. Any youth 12 and older or adults interested in volunteering should contact Kaitlyn Peine, 4-H Youth Development Agent at kpeine@ksu.edu or Registration information can be found at June 1: Exploring 4-H Children ages 5-8 are invited to come to "Exploring the Treasures of 4-H" Day Camp at the Dreher Family 4-H Building, on the Douglas County Fairgrounds. June 1, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Children will learn about 4-H, experience a sample of 4-H activities in many subjects, participate in camp games and songs, while making new friends! Activities will teach children about citizenship, science and technology, nutrition, plants and animals. The cost is $10 and includes: snack, lunch, and materials. June 21: Picture Perfect The Picture Perfect Photography Day Camp is for youth ages Participants will learn the fundamentals of snapping great photos. Photo mounting and photography judging will also be covered. This camp is on June 21 and will run from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm in the Dreher Family 4-H Building on the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The registration fee is $10, which includes lunch, snacks and workshop supplies. Registration information can be found at -state.edu/4-h/. Registration including payment, a Kansas 4-H Participation Form and online registration is due June 14. The Summer Camps advertised above are open to all youth. 4-H membership is not required. 4 READING CLUB The book for the Reading Contest at the county fair was announced at the last county reading club meeting. The book is Old Yeller by Fred Gipson. Free copies are available to 4-Hmembers on a first-come first-serve basis while supplies last at the Extension office. The Summer Space Reading program held in conjunction with the Lawrence Public Library was also announced and includes many hands-on activities and space related reading. The program will culminate with an amazing opportunity to "talk" with the International Space Station in September. A detailed flyer is on the county website along with a flyer about the Douglas County Fair Reading Contest. The next bi-annual meeting of the county-wide reading club will be September 20, at 6:30 pm at the Dreher Family 4-H Building. DOUGLAS COUNTY 4-H STEM TEAM A county-wide team focused on STEM is forming now that will allow you to use your leadership, communication, and science skills while working together to produce a solution to a challenge at the annual Destination Imagination competition. Fun, interactive and engaging monthly STEM activities will begin in September. For any questions or to join the team, please contact Paula Aiken at the Extension office, paiken@ksu.edu or Marisa Dallman via 3dallman@gmail.com Kahlyn s 5-K Run/5 Block Walk The fourth annual Kahlyn s 5-K Run / 5-Block Walk will be June 11. The Run/Walk event supports two scholarships given in Kahlyn s honor to area high school seniors. One of these scholarships is given by the Douglas County 4-H Foundation. Kahlyn was an active member of the Clinton Eagles 4-H Club for 11 years and was the recipient of many 4-H honors and awards. She passed away in September 2012 when she was only 22 years old. Registration for the event is available online at: kehlegacyfoundation.com. You can also register at the event beginning at 7:00 am. The event will start in the parking lot of the Regal Southwind Theater (formerly Hollywood Theater) at approximately 34th and Iowa Streets. The Heine family appreciates all the support received from the Douglas County 4-H families. Lawrence Summer Food Program The Lawrence Summer Food Program provides free meals Monday-Friday to all children between the ages of These meals provide essential nutrients for active, growing kids. To participate in the program all kids have to do is show up at a site. Anyone under the age of 4 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults can purchase lunch for $3.45 and breakfast for $2.15. Lunch and breakfast sites include: Hillcrest Elementary, New York Elementary and Woodlawn Elementary Schools. Lunch only sites include Broken Arrow Park, East Lawrence Recreation Center, Lawrence Public Library and South Park Gazebo.
