1 About us AAUW Willingboro, New Jersey Branch NEWSLETTER, OCTOBER 2017 EDITION The American Association of University Women was founded in 1881 to help women obtain a College education and to make the fullest use of their education. There are now more than 100,000 AAUW members in more than 1000 branches and 800 college and university partners in the United States. All members are also members of the IFUW (International Federation of University Women). National Headquarters are at 1310 L Street, Suite 1000, N.W., and Washington, D.C The telephone number is AAUW (2289). The Willingboro Branch began in We are involved in the National fellowship programs as well as New Jersey State programs. Our Willingboro Branch showed representation this year in the State Title IX project, the Tech Trek program's interviewing process, and the Start Smart facilitator training program. Message from Co-President It was great to see many of our members at our Covered Dish meeting on September 11th at the Burlington County Library. Our members supplied the delicious food consisting of delectable appetizers, main dishes, and desserts. It was wonderful to see everyone and have good conversation with friends. Special thanks to Josephine Ahearn for organizing this wonderful event. At our September meeting we were able to cover the highlights of our year. We will be sponsoring a mixture of worthwhile activities, speakers, and events that will create an exciting year for our members. I am very excited that our A.A.U.W. chapter will have a website and a newsletter for our members. Gaylor Simons is our new Communications Editor; she has been working very hard on our website and newsletter. Also, Arline Spangler has been very helpful with these two projects. 2 Scholarships Every year our Willingboro Branch provides two annual scholarships to mature women graduating from Rowan College at Burlington County and going on to a four year college. For the year, AAUW Willingboro Branch provided the Dorothy Brandt Memorial Scholarship and Maryann Toutant Memorial Scholarship to two students chosen by the Selection Committee of Rowan College at Burlington County. Recipient of the Dorothy Brandt Memorial Scholarship was Jennifer Lee-Herman. The Maryann Toutant Memorial Scholarship recipient was Kami Bauer- Hammerquist Scholarship Recipients The following students from Rowan College at Burlington County were awarded the following awards from our A.A.U.W. Chapter: Dorothy Brandt Memorial Scholarship - Adrienne Barnwell was awarded $ Maryann Toutant Memorial Scholarship - Krista Kunkel was awarded $ Tech Trek Tech Trek is a one-week residential camp that immerses 8th grade girls in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) classes and activities on a university campus. Hands-on experiences range from conducting chemistry and biology lab experiments to programming computer applications to dragging a seine net to participating in a drone flight. Girls learn firsthand about engaging careers from women employed in STEM fields. Willingboro Branch members Marjorie Jones and Edwina Sessions, volunteered their time again this year (2017) to serve on the Student Interview/Selection Committee for the Tech Trek Camp Program of AAUW. Two students of Burlington County were chosen as finalists, Aaliya Thompson of Westampton Middle School and Haley Farrow of DeMasi Middle School. AAUW Membership Prospective Members. Willingboro Branch AAUW welcomes new members. AAUW is open to women and men graduates of over 1000 colleges and universities in the United States. Many women and men with degrees from foreign countries are also eligible. A prospective member may attend two branch meetings as a guest. Undergraduates enrolled in a regionally accredited two - or four-year institution may be become student affiliates. Our Membership Chairwomen, Helen Riker and Arline Spangler will be glad to provide further information. Dues Membership dues should be paid no later than July 1st of each year. Membership dues are: GENERAL DUES: $70; DUAL MEMBERSHIP: $11; LIFE MEMBER: Life members pay only the state and branch dues. STUDENT AFFILIATE: $37. She is employed by Cooper University hospital as an outpatient dietician. Topic: "History of Gerrymandering" Professor Richard H. Riker, Adjunct professor of history at Widener University, will discuss the history of Gerrymandering and other ways of trying to influence the outcome of U.S. elections. 6 Book Donation Our A.A.U.W. chapter donated to the Mt. Laurel Library a hardbound copy of A Woman s Crusade written by Mary Walton. This inspiring book focuses on Alice Paul who was an American suffragist, feminist, and women s rights activist. She was one of the key leaders for campaigning for the Nineteenth Amendment which gave women the right to vote. Alice Paul was born in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. Her farmhouse in Mt. Laurel has been preserved and serves as the home for the Alice Paul Institute. Our organization also had Mary Walton the author of A Woman s Crusade speak at our annual book and author luncheon held on April 21 st at the Riverton Country Club. Literary Corner The Forgotten Queen by D.L. Borden is our next novel for our book discussion. Our meeting will be held at Eileen Bigge's house on November 3rd at 2 pm.
