The person filling this key position will serve as the chief financial officer of the university and will work closely with President Linda Hanson and her senior leadership team in advancing Hamline as a comprehensive university with a mission to create a diverse and collaborative community of learners dedicated to the development of students knowledge, values, and skills for successful lives of leadership, scholarship, and service. of leadership and achievement and a broad knowledge of financial affairs, including strategic planning, budgeting, investments, and debt management, as well as auditing and regulatory issues. Hamline University School of Law is the top-ranked private law school in Minnesota, according to U.S. News & World Report s 2015 Best Law Schools. Hamline Law has risen in the rankings again this year, moving from 126 to 121. The school s alternative dispute resolution program, anchored by the internationally renowned Dispute Resolution Institute, is ranked third in the nation, marking the 14th consecutive year the program has been in the top five nationally. The health law program, led by the school s Health Law Institute, is ranked 15th nationally. 5 Strategic Plan In 2007, Hamline University adopted Creating Pathways to Distinction, a five-year strategic plan to achieve Hamline s vision to be recognized as a diverse, learning-centered university. The plan served as a living guide and framework for decision-making and engagement of the Hamline community, resulting in extraordinary achievements for the university. Among the most notable are the establishment of university-wide learning outcomes, the opening of the Minneapolis campus, and the restructuring of academic units to unite undergraduate and graduate education in the School of Business, School of Education, and The Creative Writing Programs at Hamline. The most prominent change is the addition of the 75,000-squarefoot Carol Young Anderson and Dennis L. Anderson University Center. On August 24, 2012, the Board of Trustees approved a new strategic plan effective through 2017, building upon the initiatives started in The Hamline Experience: Pathways to Success introduces Hamline s aspiration of creating a high-impact, experientially centered liberal education for all students. Through the plan, Hamline has rededicated its commitment to diversity, creativity, and innovation, and the development of the whole person and reaffirmed its roots in the values of the United Methodist Church, including social justice, civic responsibility, and inclusive leadership and service. Further, the plan has a renewed focus on revenue generation to support the strategic initiatives and the growth of the university. Financial Resources Hamline University has an operating budget of $81 million and an endowment of $88 million. The university s total assets equal $233 million, and the university s total debt is $60 million. Gross tuition and fees revenues total $106 million, and institutional scholarships and grants awarded are at $39 million. Spending on instructional and academic support accounts for more than 60 percent of total expenses, which is on par with or higher than most same-sized and similarly endowed private colleges and universities in the state. Despite the nation s financial downturn over the past few years, Hamline s endowment has had returns better than average, and the university has also received new gifts to build the endowment. As for operations, starting in 2008, Hamline strategically maneuvered through the recession. The operating model is fully supported by the Board of Trustees and is a foundation to work from for program development and growth in revenue. 4

6 Technology Forward Hamline is committed to providing the technology required to support its teaching and learning mission. This is accomplished through direct relationships with academic leadership, an active interdisciplinary advisory committee, and a transparent resource allocation methodology. Over the past two years, the university has moved to a fully-collaborative platform (Google Apps) for , documents, and other communication applications, and is implementing a new technology selection program to ensure employees have the most appropriate technology to do their jobs. Hamline also is embracing wireless printing. The university has invested heavily in its technology infrastructure updating classrooms with the latest technology; building a state-of-the-art digital media lab to support Hamline s new digital media arts degree program; and strengthening its systems, staff, and processes to best meet the university community s needs. Leadership Opportunities The Senior Vice President for Business, Finance and Technology serves as the chief financial officer of the university. As such, the Senior Vice President works closely with the President and the senior officer team in leading overall university strategy and operations, and carries special responsibility for the development and implementation of the university s financial strategy and plan. The person filling this position also oversees a broad range of financial and business functions. Among the many and varied leadership opportunities available to the new Senior Vice President are the following: University Leadership: The Senior Vice President will join a strong and well-practiced senior officer team that works closely together in leading the university and in making key decisions, both on a day-to-day basis and longer range. Working together, and with the President, the team is responsible for advancing the key initiatives set out in Hamline s current strategic plan, The Hamline Experience: Pathways to Success. Each member of this team is expected to contribute from his or her area of special expertise, and also to engage actively with one another on the broad educational and management issues facing a private comprehensive university. Strategic Planning: In addition to the university s strategic program plan (referenced above), Hamline adopted a three-year strategic financial plan in 2012 to address operating budget pressures and to guide university operations through fiscal year The university will look to the Senior Vice President to play a key role as the university moves to prepare an updated and more comprehensive financial strategy and plan for the years immediately ahead. Operations Management: The Senior Vice President leads an administrative division that includes Facility Services, the Finance Office, Human Resources, Information Technology, as well as Risk Management Programs. operational areas are each integral to the smooth and effective operation of the university, and it falls to the Senior Vice President to build and manage the leadership team and to shape a working

External Relationships: Hamline University has, in recent years, benefited from a remarkable array of expert and highly specialized resources that provide support for university financial management and operations. This list includes bankers, investment advisors, financing specialists, auditors, insurance experts, and, most importantly, University Trustees who serve on four committees: Audit, Finance, Investment, and Facilities. The new Senior Vice President will play a key role in tending and building these numerous relationships for the continued benefit of Hamline. The Attributes of Leadership The successful applicant for this position will hold a master s degree (or equivalent), most likely in the areas of finance or accounting; a CPA is preferred. In addition, it is expected that the individual will have eight to 10 years of experience as a financial officer, preferably in higher education. Among the attributes of leadership being sought are the following: An excitement about the work and mission of Hamline University that reflects a clear understanding and deep appreciation for the academic enterprise. A professional history of growth and achievement that evidences a high energy, entrepreneurial, and creative leadership style. A strong knowledge base in the areas of finance, investments, budgeting, auditing, insurance, human resources, facilities construction, debt financing, and information systems. Demonstrated experience and success as a big picture financial strategist, including the ability to work effectively with close colleagues and diverse groups in building consensus around common strategic directions. A team-oriented management style that effectively engages people across the units and offices that work with and report to the Senior Vice President, as well as the broader campus community. A skilled communicator who works well oneon-one, in small groups negotiating, and is both comfortable and effective representing the university in varied settings and with multiple constituencies. The capacity to make decisions that are clear, timely, based on relevant information and input, and that reflect the broad interests of the university. A commitment to transparency as a management style in daily decision-making and in financial planning and reporting. A track record of success in working with those external to the campus, including financial and other expert advisors, members and committees of the Board of Trustees, and the campus neighborhood. A public person who enjoys others and who will actively engage in the daily life and activities of the university community. 6
