INTRODUCTION DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK DETAILS FOR UON 2015 ANNUAL REPORT The Department of Sociology was established as a fully fledged department in the 1968/69 academic year, having initially operated as a sub-department of the Department of Economics. Since then, the Department has grown to become one of the largest department sin the Faculty of Arts and College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). It hosts programmes from the fields of Sociology and Social Work; the later operates as a substantive academic programme of the department. Students intending to specialize in Social Work register with the Department in their first year. After successful completion of their first year courses, those intending to specialize in Social Work do so from their second year. The Department of Sociology and Social Work has highly trained and reputable human resource with local and international exposure. Currently, the Department has a total full time staff size of 23 distributed as follows: 4Full Professors; 5 Associate Professors; 4 Senior Lecturers; 10 Lecturers and 1 Assistant Lecturer; 6 tutorial Fellows.This pool of full time staff is assisted by 3 part time lecturers to make an overall total of 33 Academic staff. Of the 30 full time Academic staff, 14 attained their doctorate degrees abroad while 8 attained the same locally. 2. PROGRAMMES OFFERED (I) Diploma The two undergraduate programmes offered are: a. Social Wok and Social Development b. Criminology and Social Order (II) Undergraduate programmes The three undergraduate programmes offered are: a) B.A. in Sociology b) B.A. in Social Work c) Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice These three programmes take 4 academic years and are offered under Module I, II and III degree programs. 1

2 (III) Post-Graduate Diploma in Sociology This is a two-semester coursework based degree in Sociology. programme. It is offered only as a Module II (IV) Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Sociology The Department offers a two-year M.A> degree in Sociology in different clusters and hence awards M.A. degrees in Sociology within the following specific domains: M.A. in Sociology (General) offered only in Module I (Regular) programme M.A. in Sociology (Advanced Disaster Management) M.A. in Sociology (Counseling) M.A. in Sociology (Criminology and Social Order) M.A. in Sociology (Labour Management Relations) M.A. in Sociology (Medical Sociology) M.A. in Sociology (Rural Sociology & Community Development) Except for the M.A. in Sociology (General); that is offered in Module I, all other M.A> degree courses are offered under Module II (Parallel) programmes. (V) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) The Department offers a Ph.D. degree by research and thesis mode which takes a minimum of 3 years under Module I programme. INTERNATIONAL LINKS To date, the Department has one active international link through which we exchange students with the following international institutions: a) Kalamazoo University College, USA. The link was established in Through it, the Department sends at least 2 Social Work students who are fully sponsored by the Norwegian government to study for a B.A. in Social Work at Volda. b) Loyola University College, Chicago, USA: Starting 2009, the Department established a link with Loyala. Through the link, the Department has offered institutional affiliation to two Ph.D. STUDENTS FROM Loyola who are doing their preliminary preparations for their doctoral research in Kenya. c) Coppin State University, USA: Provides Research, Academic/student Exchange, cultural and educational opportunities for mutual benefit. 5. INTERNATIONAL LINKS AND COLLABORATION Currently the Department is hosting a PhD candidate (Ms Samantha Winter) from the Department of Social Work, Rutgers University USA 8.
