The Department has 22 faculty, four staff, and about 90 MA and Ph.D. students. The Department s annual budget is about $3.0 million.
2 2 Under my leadership the department made substantial progress. It is fully committed to high quality teaching, research and service. The research productivity, professional involvement and external funding of the department increased under my Headship. New programs were implemented, including the MA and Ph.D. degrees in Economics, a joint MA Economics/MBA degree, a unique undergraduate cross-department major in Spanish-Economics, and Certificates in the Teaching of Economics for undergraduate and graduate students. New courses included Consumer Economics, Environmental Economics, Law and Economics, Teaching Methods in Economics, Real Estate Economics, the Economics of Sports, and the Economics of Religion. Founding Director, Center for Economic Education, University Of Illinois at Chicago, Founding Director (2000) of the UIC Center for Economic Education. The Center s mission is to increase and to improve the quality of the teaching of economics through a teaching the teachers approach. The target populations are current and prospective K-12 teachers and graduate students planning a career in college and university teaching of economics. These activities include creating a graduate level course, Teaching Methods in Economics, which our Department requires before a graduate student will be assigned to teach a course. For my activities with CEE I received the 3M Education Excellence Award from the Illinois Council on Economic Education, Program Director- Migration Studies, IZA Institute for the Study of Labor (Bonn), Present Founding Director of the IZA research program in migration studies. Coordinate activities, including Annual Migration Meeting (AM2) Workshop and research program.
