10/28/ S. Limestone Street Wethington Building, Room 204 Lexington, KY Phone Fax Dear selection committee, As an orthopaedic section member and educator I would like to offer my strongest enthusiastic support in the nomination of Kaley Robertson for the outstanding student award from the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. I have known Kaley for almost 5 years and feel well positioned to speak to why I feel she is an exceptional candidate for this award. I have detailed below my supporting evidence for why I believe this extraordinary student should be considered for this award. Kaley has shown a deep commitment to advancing orthopaedic physical therapy practice through her conduct in research studies that began even before she started physical therapy school. While still an undergraduate student she led and conducted numerous experiments that have helped better define what common functional tests such as the Y balance test and step down test are actually assessing. She has presented this work at the American College of Sports Medicine s annual meeting. In addition, she has either been the primary or co-author on 6 abstracts presented at national meetings and a recent paper that was published in Physical Therapy in Sport. More recently, she has had the research that she initiated and led while a physical therapy student accepted as a podium presentation in an orthopaedic section session at the 2017 Combined Sections Meeting. She is the first physical therapy student I have ever worked with to have her work be selected for this session type while still a student. I believe this is a reflection of her continued dedication and contributions to the field. Her research as a physical therapy student has provided us with new important insights into how people with patellofemoral pain experience pain. Her work has direct clinical implications that will help those who treat this common disorder. Moreover, I feel these examples provide clear objective evidence of initiative, leadership, and creativity. What I have found most extraordinary about her research efforts is that she has done all of this while maintaining high academic performance (undergraduate GPA: 3.89; graduate GPA: 4.0). Kaley has also been a leader in the physical therapy program where she is a Fundraising Chair. I know she has made great personal sacrifices to stay late, come early, and do everything in between to make sure she completes her research and is a leader in the program. I have found her to be deeply committed to our profession and passionate about helping elevate it by improving the evidence for physical therapy and providing physical therapists with better tools to help their patients. In working with many students, this type of insight and passion for the field at such an early stage of a person s career is rare. I feel that honoring her work with this award would recognize her sacrifices and contributions and hopefully inspire other students to do the same thing. In summary, I firmly believe Kaley s contributions deserve recognition by the orthopaedic section. I truly find working with individuals such as Kaley inspiring and her commitment, passion, and dedication to the field help drive me to elevate the work I do. She is well deserving of this award and would be a great example for all of our physical therapy students to aspire to. I hope that you will strongly consider her for this important award. All the best, Brian Noehren PT, Ph.D. FACSM Associate Professor Division of Physical Therapy Department of Orthopaedic Surgery University of Kentucky b.noehren@uky.edu

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY Chandler Medical Center Division of Physical Therapy Rm. 204 CAHP Building 900 South Limestone Ave. Lexington, Kentucky (859) ext Fax (859) October 26, 2016 TO: Selection Committee, Orthopaedic Section Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award RE: Nomination of Kaley Robertson BS Kinesiology 2014 University of Kentucky (Summa Cum Laude) Enrolled in the DPT Program- University of Kentucky It is a distinct pleasure to provide this nomination for Kaley Robertson for the Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award of the Orthopaedic Section. In PT education we are truly blessed to work with top flight students as a rule. Kaley is special. She has been with us through her undergraduate degree working in Brian Noehren s biodynamics laboratory and then continuing her efforts in his lab during her DPT. These actions have resulted in 6 abstracts and one article. These outputs include a platform presentation for the Orthopaedic Section at CSM. Much of this work encompasses the function of the hip and hip musculature. Brian has spoken more inclusively of his observations of Kaley as her direct mentor. We have a pro-bono clinic coordinated by the DPT students which provides services two nights per week. Kaley is one of the dedicated volunteers in that effort. I have had the pleasure of supervising her and have noted a keen desire to not only do the right thing but also serve the complete needs of the client. She cares deeply and this is also exhibited through her coordination of fundraising activities of her DPT class. To provide perspective, she has done these things while also achieving a 3.9+ UG GPA and now maintaining a 4.0 DPT GPA. She is highly thought of by all as evidenced by her DPT application. Every single letter of recommendation listed her as 5/5 or Excellent in all ranked categories. Kaley will be a contributor and one the Section would embrace as an Award recipient. I thank you in advance for your consideration. Sincerely, Terry Malone, EdD, PT, ATC, FAPTA Professor of Physical Therapy, University of Kentucky An Equal Opportunity University
October 14, S. Limestone Street Wethington Building, Room 204 Lexington, KY Phone Fax Orthopaedic Section of the APTA Awards Committee Dear Awards Committee: It is my distinct pleasure to write you in support of Kaley Robertson for the Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award for Kaley is currently a third year student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Kentucky and has demonstrated throughout the program that she is not only a top student, but also has the passion to be a leader in her community and profession for years to come. Kaley has been a member of the APTA throughout her time in the program and also is an Orthopaedic Section member. Kaley has served her class as one of the fundraising chairs and has been instrumental in planning and implementing several successful major fundraising events. While holding this office, Kaley has improved on her undergraduate GPA of 3.96 by achieving a professional program GPA of 4.0. Her clinical instructors speak of her ability to critically reason efficiently while establishing excellent rapport with her patients. While as an undergraduate student and continuing as a DPT student, Kaley has been working in the biomechanics laboratory of Dr. Brian Noehren. In the lab they study gait biomechanics and Kaley will be presenting her research in this lab at the APTA s Combined Sections Meeting in February, As you know, a platform presentation in the Orthopaedic Section is quite an honor. It is a testament to Kaley s understanding of research methods, her training and her dedication to excellence that her abstract was selected for presentation. Kaley Robertson has certainly distinguished herself in the classroom and the research lab. However, she also distinguishes herself in the service she provides in the community. Kaley is one of the students who provide PT services to the underserved in Lexington, KY through the Samaritan s Touch Student Run Free PT Clinic. She has committed her time and expertise under the supervision of community faculty to provide PT care for people without insurance. Not only has Kaley served in this capacity with her skills as a student physical therapist, she has also taught Sunday school at the local Catholic Newman Center throughout her undergraduate and professional program education. This commitment requires preparation and focus over and above her school and clinical work, yet she is a valued member of the faculty at the Newman Center as reported by the coordinator of religious education. As you can see, Kaley Robertson is an outstanding student, and would be a great choice for this award. Her commitment to excellence is focused on her work as a physical therapist, but she does not stop there. She also is committed to serving her community and profession. Thank you for your consideration of Kaley Robertson for the Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award of the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA. Yours Truly, Robert A. (Tony) English, PT, PhD Physical Therapy Program Chair
To Whom It May Concern: I am pleased to nominate Kaley Robertson for the Outstanding PT Student Award. I have known Kaley for the past four years and have always found her dependable, punctual, and hardworking. She has a strong passion to help and serve others locally and globally. Over the years, I have been impressed with her ability to maintain a consistent balance between her schoolwork, personal life, and involvement with various organizations in the community. Her work ethic and attention to details shines in every thing she does; whether it be a group project, leading a fundraising event, or volunteering at an event. Kaley has served as one of our class fundraising chairs the past two years. On several accounts, she has communicated effectively and ensured events have operated smoothly in order to raise funds to help prepare our physical therapy class for state board exams. I have witnessed her contributions to many group projects throughout undergraduate and professional school. With her strong leadership skills, she is able to ensure the group is organized and everyone is contributing the same amount of time and effort. Kaley is committed to her professional duty as a physical therapist to provide effective services to patients/clients, serve our profession, and positively influence the health of our society. Kaley utilized current evidence based literature to support interventions and treatments. She has a desire to pursue new evidence related to physical therapy to expand her knowledge. Also, she was selected to work at a free clinic, run by physical therapy students, where she treats patients who are underserved and uninsured. I have had the pleasure of working alongside her and have seen firsthand her ability to help those realize their full potential for rehabilitation. Kaley embodies the skills and qualities of an excellent future physical therapist. I am so honored to call her my future colleague, role model and friend. I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Kaley Robertson. Sincerely, Sarah Crouch Physical Therapy Student University of Kentucky Class of 2017
October 19, 2016 Rachelle McKinley 600 South Mill St. Lexington, KY To whom it may concern, I am writing on behalf of Kaley Robertson regarding the Orthopedic Physical Therapy award. She and I are both attending physical therapy school at the University of Kentucky and have been conducting research together, under Brian Noehren, since February of We have worked closely together during our time as research partners as well as classmates throughout PT school and have become close friends as well. I believe that I can thoroughly vouch for her character and academic abilities. She is a wonderful partner to work with because she is consistently organized and is willing to go the extra mile in order to ensure that the best work possible is put forth. Kaley is always a leader when put in a group situation and is not afraid to take initiative and put in hard work. Kaley has been the scheduling coordinator for our research study and has been very effective and efficient at coordinating and scheduling over 60 participants for the study while having to work around class, clinic, and study schedules. Kaley is able to prioritize what needs to be done and which steps are necessary to guarantee that the necessary tasks are completed. I have also worked with Kaley as a fellow fundraising chair for our class and I am very grateful to have had a partner like herself to not only facilitate discussion with the entire team, but to make sure that all members of the team have tasks adequately delegated. Kaley is a leader in all that she does. Kaley is a hard working student and puts in effort to achieve high grades in all of her classes and I know that she enjoys learning from fellow students and professors in the lab and classroom settings. One of the qualities that makes Kaley a fantastic learner because she is not afraid to speak up when she does not understand something and will ask questions to clarify until she does. She is also very detail oriented and does not allow anything to be overlooked, always ensuring optimal patient safety. I believe her qualities of being a hard worker and detail oriented, along with compassion, intelligence, and willingness to learn have made Kaley a successful student and will allow Kaley to be an exceptional physical therapist as well as very qualified candidate for this award. With her relentless motivation to be the best physical therapist possible Kaley is a well deserving candidate for this award and will continue to grow as a professional throughout her career after graduation. She is an outstanding example of commitment to research and continual learning. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.
