I think that did a great job of giving us a head start on how everything will be and it kind of prepared us, so I believe we will get off to a good start....darius Miller I ve wanted to play here my whole life. And my dad was actually a big Kentucky fan too. So, I m kind of living the dream I guess you could say. It s actually crazier than I expected. The fans are very crazy....jarrod Polson You can t always be happy or satisfied with your game. You should always have things to work on. With me I am always working, I m always trying to find things to improve....stacey Poole Q: about Midnight Madness: It s going to be different. I saw all of the people camping out, and I was just in shock. At Florida about 5,000 people showed up, and here there will be more than 24, Eloy Vargas We are really just focusing on our season and not really worried about what last year s team did. They are a different set of guys and we are a new set of guys and we all know what our goals are....brandon Knight Basketball Media Day at UK

Combs Director / Syndicated Columnist Tri State Sports Media Service Inc. What's that old time honored remark in the English language when refering to something that just won't ever happen? "When hell freezes over"? Well, it finally did. Put the basketballs back in the rack and keep them at the Joe Craft Center for practice, because football is alive and well on Cooper Drive in Lexington, Ky. This UK football team has new life and a new purpose and a set of goals for Yes, that signature win that "Joker" Phillips had been looking for finally came to fruition, as the much maligned UK defense came out of the locker room after halftime with a new attitude for the second consecutive week and gave the offense an opportunity to charge from behind and give the Big Blue Nation something it has longed for since 2000, a win over South Carolina and a win over arguably the most hated coach on their schedule, Steve Spurrier. Two ugly streaks busted on the same night. Don't know about you, but I've learned five things about this football team the last two weeks that I thought were true earlier in the year but I'm definitely sold on them now. # 1 - Even with all their defensive shortcomings there ain't no quit in this team. Translated, there is still a lot of Rich Brooks left in this team and you can see it and feel it. # 2 - Randall Cobb may be the most versatile football player in America but make no mistake that this is Mike Hartline s team and whereever they end up at in post season play it will be because they rode the coat tails of Hartline the entire season. It's time to pony up Big Blue Nation. You were dead wrong about him. # 3 - The kicking game dilemma of the special teams has officially been settled now with Tydlacka as the punter and McIntosh as the field goal & extra point kicker. # 4 - Chris Matthews is the best kept secret in the SEC...maybe college football...and let's hope it stays that way. # 5 - Call me crazy, especially with the defense being so suspect at times, but I think this team is solid enough offensively that with the toughest part of the schedule behind them they are gonna have a finish down the stretch that may be something we will cherish for years to come. Isn't it weird how quick the whole complexion of the future of the SEC can change as far as the post season goes? Just a few weeks ago everybody had pretty much written off every team in the SEC East but South at #1 seed Hazard #4 seed Allen Central at #2 seed Betsy Lane #3 seed Pineville at #2 seed Harlan #3 seed Paintsville #4 seed Jenkins at #1 seed Pikeville Carolina & Florida. Then Georgia rips off two wins in impressive fashion and Florida goes deeper in the dumpster losing three games in a row. Throw in a UK upset over South Carolina and you've got a log jam that could get even more interesting should UK continue with their second half magic. NCAA Still On Hold In Kanter's Case If nothing else, I'm hoping the Enes Kanter situation will open some eyes with NCAA athletic directors, presidents, and chancellors. There is no reason for a youngster to have his or her student - athlete status in question for so long. Those individuals making these decisions can't be this overworked. There are annual deadlines in place already for each member school s compliance director to apply for their respective student - athlete s eligibility. Why aren't there any deadlines in place for the NCAA to notify each player & school for each sport involved? Then again, with the way the NCAA and some of it's member schools treat the media at times, maybe they already have notified UK of their decision and UK may be in the rebuttal or reapplying phase. Who knows what is going on or where the process is at!. Regardless of the outcome, what I can't Class A Region 4 Football Playoffs * District 8 team will host if teams of equal seeding meet. Pineville is in District 7 Hell finally freezes over as Kentucky beats Steve Spurrier get out of my mind is how the NCAA can set idly by over the last years and watch the spring and summer AAU circuit get so out of control with the recruiting scenarios and shoe contracts that come and go every year, yet never offer up any assistance to combat those problems. Having been somewhat directly involved with this area of college basketball during the late 80's and 90's I can count at least elite AAU programs that get their hooks in these high profile players in their freshman years of high school and pay their expenses for their services each AAU season, jetting them from Vegas to Atlanta to Chicago to Orlando to points all over the world in some situations. You can't tell me that these elite high profile high school athletes involved with these superior AAU programs don't have as much money spent on them and given to them by their sponsors over a three - four period than that European Club team did with Kanter. It all starts with the shoe companies getting their hooks into the players thru their AAU coaches. Free Enes and anybody else in Europe or on the AAU circuit to go in what ever direction they want to go in and start fresh with a new set of rules for the future.

The junior also has one sack, two pass breakups and two forced fumbles on the year. Trevathan has led UK in tackling in six games this season, including a career high 17 against Auburn. Cobb and Trevathan were also named midseason 1st-team All-SEC along with Locke. Warford was named 2nd team as an OG, while Cobb is a 2nd team punt returner. Hartline and Matthews are on the 3rd team. Kentucky s rally from an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat South Carolina is the biggest comeback in school history, according to box scores available since UK trailed at halftime, but got three 2nd-half TD passes from Mike Hartline, including the 24-yard game-winner to Randall Cobb. Meanwhile, the Wildcat defense kept the Gamecocks off the board in the 2nd half. The previous record was a 17-point deficit. The last two deer seasons are illustrations in extremes. There was only one other year that I can remember an acorn drought as bad as last year s was. And this year s abundance of acorns is equally as uncommon. The deer are not having to move very much or very far in order to get to ample food. As a result, seeing fields full of bucks and does has been and will be, rare. Last year, sightings were almost a daily occurrence. While these two years are unique, every year has its own difficulties. This is especially magnified when you travel to hunt. Each time I take an extended hunting trip, I am always at the mercies of whatever circumstances come my way. This year my Maine trip coincided with record-breaking heat temperatures. Last year my Missouri trip was met with floods. During some trips, the wind blows so hard that the deer do not move. Other trips, I m too early or too late for the rut. Rarely have I ever hit the woods at just the perfect time. I guess that s what keeps me going back. The truth is the difficulties that are faced when we hunt are not a separate matter. They are just as a part of the hunt as hanging a treestand. To hunt without difficulties would * Oct. 18, 2008: UK trailed Arkansas 17-0 at the 9:45 mark of the 3Q. Hartline threw three TD passes, including two to Cobb in the last 4:15 of the game, for a win. * Oct. 25, 2003: UK trailed Miss. State 17-0 at the 12:10 mark of the 2Q. UK responded simply be to kill. I would dare say the inability to rightly handle difficulties is what turns honest hunters into poachers. They resort to the easy way out. And the trophy on the wall is a daily reminder of what you get when the price is too high for the prize. What goes for hunting also goes for daily living. While some days may be unique in their problems; every day has its own obstacles, situations and difficulties. These are not a separate part of the day, but one of its most important ingredients. They are what make our successes more memorable, satisfying, and more valuable for what they bring to our lives. They are life. They are the tools God uses to sharpen us for His use. They prepare us to be injected in the lives of those around us who need to know they too can make it through the most difficult times. So, this week you can face your difficulties as enemies and fight them every step of the way, or you can expect them, work along side them, and realize when your trophy comes, it will mean a whole lot more knowing what you had to go through to get it. Gary Miller gary@outdoortruths.org Kentucky Football: Cobb, Trevathan on midseason All America teams with 42 unanswered points for a win. * Sept. 19, 1998: UK trailed Indiana 20-3 with 40 seconds left in the 2Q and also at the 12:39 mark of the 3Q when the Wildcats got three-straight touchdowns for a victory.
