1 ABOUT US COLLABORATIVES EVENT CALENDAR COMMUNITY CONTACT US Search The Louisiana Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching The Louisiana Outreach Project, two regional collaboratives funded through the Shell-TRC Partnership Highlights Louisiana has two regional P-16 partnerships linking universities with elementary and high school science teachers to provide sustained and high intensity professional development opportunities: Northern Louisiana between Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, and Grambling State University, Grambling; and South-Central Louisiana between Louisiana State University and Southern University, Baton Rouge. To date, the Louisiana Regional Collaboratives (LRCs) have served approximately 206 teacher leaders from 22 parishes who in turn have mentored and provided workshops to approximately 600 teachers from parishes across the state of Louisiana, hence, impacting the achievements of approximately 48,000 students. Sixty one percent of the teachers served are Caucasian, 38% are African American, and 1% Other. The LRCs have worked with and trained teacher leaders from the following parishes: Caddo, Bossier, Webster, Claiborne, Bienville, Union, Jackson, Lincoln, Morehouse, Ouachita, Caldwell, Ascension, Iberville, Point Coupee, Baker, West Baton Rouge, Zachary, Orleans, Jefferson, St. Landry, Lafourche, and East Baton Rouge. These teacher leaders are providing outreach activities to teachers in parishes across Louisiana. Training has occurred in a variety of sciences including the Jason Project, Polymer Science (Recycling) Chemistry, earth sciences, GEMS workshops, The Private Eye, two-week Summer Institute on Designing Effective

2 and Engaging Inquiry-Based Labs, and Shell/LRC NanoSCIENCE engineering and science. The LRCs have organized Honoring the Teachers events to recognize teachers, engage policy makers and elected officials, reward Shell as a corporate partner, and showcase the partnership in media outlets and the community. Furthermore, the LRCs have provided science fair mini-grants to encourage and excite students to pursue STEM careers. The LRCs have also forged communications with Tulane University, Xavier University, Sci-Port Discovery Center, LSU-Shreveport and Bossier Parish Community College to forge new Regional Collaboratives in Louisiana in the service of additional teachers in those regions. Jbeily, Ph.D., Executive Director Telephone: kjbeily@mail.utexas.edu Website: LA TECH/GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY REGIONAL COLLABORATIVE FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE TEACHING Creating Connections is the foundation of the LA Tech/Grambling State University Regional Collaborative (LGC) for Excellence in Science Teaching. The LGC links the Colleges of Applied and Natural Sciences and Engineering and Science, the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Rehabilitation Science (CyBERS) and the Institute for Micromanufacturing at Louisiana Tech University and the College of Pure and Applied Sciences at Grambling State with school systems across northern Students worked with STEM graduate students to build hydrogen fuel cell/solar powered cars and designed experiments for use in their classroom.

3 Louisiana. CATALyST (Center for Applied Teaching and Learning to Yield Scientific Thinking), a regional science and math education center housed in the School of Biological Sciences at Louisiana Tech, coordinates all aspects of the program. In addition, the LGC has established partnerships with Shreveport s Sci-Port Discovery Center, the University of Wisconsin s MRSEC Center and with National Science Foundation funded Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12), Research Experiences for Undergraduates, and Research Experiences for Teachers programs enabling the LGC to extend its outreach programs to the K-16+ education community and the general public. Through these partnerships, the LGC conducts summer and academic year teacher professional development workshops and student enrichment activities. Special emphasis is placed on research experiences for K-12 teachers and their students and fostering both formal and informal interactions among K-12 students, University students, research scientists and engineers. Teachers raced their fuel cell cars. The winner was the team with the most efficient fuel cell catalyst. Shell nanoscience DAY One Louisiana Tech s Regional Collaborative (LRC) program is centered on the theme of molecular science and nanotechnology, a combination of biology and engineering at the nanoscale. There are three major program components at Louisiana Tech University. They are the Shell/LRC nanoscience Summer Research workshops, a Shell/LRC nanoscience DAY, and the Shell/LRC nanoscience Investigative Sciences program. Each component has as its focus to prepare teachers with the content and pedagogical knowledge, infrastructure and support that will allow them to engage their students in challenging hands-on activities and investigations focused on nanotechnology. Through these experiences students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the current and future technology-driven workplace and will be encouraged to extend their education and pursue STEM careers. The F.U.E.L. for Thought Program is a highlight for participants during the summer. It is a one-week workshop designed to expose teachers to alternative energy, energy research being conducted at Louisiana Tech University, and careers in the energy field.

4 Shell nanoscience DAY Two Hands-on science LSU/SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY REGIONAL COLLABORATIVE FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE TEACHING Leveraging Resources Leveraging local, state and national resources is the Preservice and alternative certification teachers as well as practitioners requiring middle school certification visit the Challenger Center and work together to experience hands-on science. We came, we conquered the Poverty Point Reservoir!

5 cornerstone of the Southern University/Louisiana State University Collaborative. Partnerships among the Louisiana Department of Education through their Math Science Partnership Programs and the Louisiana Board of Regents have provided information for compliance with all state education mandates and assisted the SLC in offering services to the education community. In addition, the SLC has forged partnerships with many education organizations and agencies, including the JASON Foundation, National Alliance of State Science and Math Coalitions (NASSMC), National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), Louisiana Science Teachers Association (LSTA), Louisiana Association of Science Leaders (LASL), Louisiana Environmental Education Commission, Louisiana Art and Science Museum, the Center for BioModular Multi-Scale Systems, Baton Rouge Recreation and Park Commission and LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory). Through these partnerships and many other connections, the SLC has been able to provide services that not only further science education across south Louisiana, but also provide extensive resources for K-16 teachers of science. SLC JASON Train-the-Trainer Leadership Institute Sustainability is a key component of the South Louisiana Collaborative. Programs are embedded within an existing infrastructure to ensure successful completion and continuation of the SLC. Plans are currently underway to kick-off the South Louisiana JASON Train-the-Trainer Leadership Institute July This institute is being led by a nationally recognized JASON Lead Trainer to provide leadership development to our first cohort of two-person teams, to provide professional development and mentoring to 160 of their peers over the course of the academic year.. SLC participants enjoy the flora and fauna of Lake Martin and learn about the impact of the wetlands on South Louisiana.
