2 College Statement and Statistics President Marcia Keizs Charted in 1966, York College is one of The City University of New York s 11 senior colleges and is committed to its mission of teaching, research, and public service. In addition, the College is committed to serving the needs of the students it serves and the community it welcomes. York College offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in 40 different liberal arts, sciences, and professional majors, including Physician Assistant, Aviation Management and Communications Technology, as well as the combined B.S./M.S. in Occupational Therapy. The College is distinguished not only for offering a variety of majors and minors in almost every discipline but also for bringing professional programs in business, accounting, information systems management, teacher education, social work and allied health sciences to traditionally to underserved populations. The College also offers certificate programs in a variety of fields that include: mortgage finance; child care professions; survey research; and Spanish for professional purposes. In the near future, we will enhance our strong allied health programs with a generic nursing program as well as a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition to the CUNY Aviation Institute, York College is home to the Northeast Region U.S. Food and Drug Administration Headquarters (FDA). The College s approximately 6,000 students hail from more than 50 different countries of birth. Approximately 41 percent of our students study part-time, and in , 1,100 new students were transfer students and 850 were first-time freshmen. Many of our entering students are older than the traditional entering age of 17-18, but a survey of our next entering class indicates that York College is beginning to attract more students of traditional college age. York College offers a variety of scholarships, both merit and retention, through the York College Foundation, Student Government Association and Auxiliary Enterprises, Inc. With almost 180 full-time faculty and close to 260 part-time faculty, there is a student-to-faculty ratio of 16:1. Most full-time faculty hold terminal degrees in their disciplines and are also recipients of many national and regional awards, receiving over $7 million annually in grants from federal, state and local government agencies. Beginning in early 2008, the College will begin a comprehensive Master Planning process, focusing on the campus's physical structure and facilities over the next ten years. The issues to be addressed include general enrollment, and specific programmatic, growth; campus visibility, coherence and attractiveness; educational and extracurricular activities; and partnerships with private and public enterprises. A key aspect of the Master Plan exercise is to build upon York s role in the continuing revitalization of southeast Queens and our relationship with the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation. Core Dewatering/ Subbasement Upgrades Recent increases in the Queens water table have brought water levels to three feet above the basement floor of the Academic Core Building, the largest of the College's facilities. This has created a hazardous situation, necessitating the relocation of the electric distribution system. This project seeks to create an impermeable envelope for the electrical room. Additionally, due to water damage and corrosion to the existing equipment, all electric panels and distribution system equipment in the Academic Core building will be replaced with newer, more compact models and mounted on platforms further preventing the possibility of corrosion or damage in the future. Fire Alarm & Life Safety September 2012 This project will integrate the Fire Alarm/Security System throughout the York College campus, creating a central location to manage and control campus security. The integration of the system will allow the College to easily access information regarding all fire and security issues on campus and will ensure that preventive measures are provided more readily and efficiently throughout campus. January 2011 HPEC Building Rehabilitation This project will provide repairs and enhancements to the Health and Physical Education Complex (HPEC. Egress vestibule doors and hardware on both the North and South facades, the gym doors, and the pool doors will be replaced. A new staircase leading from the south facade to the HPEC field will be installed. Additionally, issues related to a leaking roof and façade will be addressed so that the interior areas taken offline due to leaking may be reactivated. Approximately 50,000 square feet of roof and a broken skylight will be replaced and areas of the building envelope that have suffered spalling will be re-pointed and the parapet will be replaced. 5 Student Services/Classroom Building This project will create a new (80,000 GSF) Student Services/ Classroom Building, which will house student clubs, activities space, modern classrooms and conference rooms to be used by the various departments within the College. In addition, this project will create consolidated space for the CUNY Public Safety Program as well as the CUNY Aviation Institute, both of which are expanding rapidly. The College's Master Plan Amendment will provide guidance to determine the buildings space program. It is anticipated that completion of this project may result in increases to operating and maintenance costs. $83,984 $6,000 $77,984 June 2013 Academic Core Building Upgrades The Academic Core Building is the center of activity on campus. It is currently comprised of both instructional and administrative spaces, as well as student services. The project will renovate existing space in response to changing academic needs of the institution and create a better integrated, more student-friendly campus. A Master Plan will commence in January 2008 that will define the space and cost estimate for this project. September 2013 Site Improvements Phase 2 The College recognizes that the built environment of the campus greatly contributes to the quality of the educational experience. Because of the open nature of the campus physical boundaries, there are pedestrian and vehicular conflicts at Archer Avenue, Liberty Avenue, and Guy R Brewer Boulevard. This project will remedy these defects and address safety issues. It will also address additional campus needs based on the forthcoming Master Plan Amendment, which will provide design recommendations, and further strengthen York's vision of being a premier "academic village". 6 City Council & Borough President (Reso A) s Exterior Beautification Project The project will provide tunnel signage and lighting improvements for the tunnel entrances under the Long Island Railroad off Archer Avenue at 160th, 161st and Guy R. Brewer Boulevard, similar to that of the recently completed tunnel entrance at 159th Street. In addition, the chain-link fence along South Road will be replaced with the campus standard fence, and new signage will be applied to the facade of the Science Building. This project received a total of $2.25 million from the Borough President and City Council in FY 2008; this request is for the $1.5 million promised by the City Council in FY September 2010 Greenhouse Renovation This project will fully rehab the York College greenhouse located on the roof of the Academic Core Building. Renovations will include upgrading the HVAC system to meet the current standard systems used in state-of-the-art greenhouses: installing equipment used to preserve plant life in a greenhouse environment. Bringing the greenhouse on-line would allow the College to strengthen its Botany and Environmental Studies courses. C DCE $1,500 $2,250 $1,796 September 2011 Scientific Analysis Equipment This project will purchase and install six state-of-the-art analytical chemistry instruments to upgrade the College's analytical chemistry courses and support its expanding FDA collaborative projects. Additionally, this project will improve equipment at two monitoring wells installed on the campus by the United States Geological Survey and the NYC DEP in This project will also install a liquid nitrogen generator to minimize the cost of operating the nuclear magnetic resonance facility on campus. C $2,337 September 2009 HPEC Renovations This project will replace and reconfigure the store-front vestibule doors in the gymnasium to allow safe egress conditions and a smooth flow of traffic for all students entering the Health and Physical Education Complex. The existing glass doors constantly crack and break down and do not allow the transport of sports equipment. They create hazardous conditions for students and faculty. The project will also replace the entry walls in the exercise room with a new glass entrance to allow an open welcoming feeling and encourage the use of the College exercise room. September 2010 Landscape Development In line with the renovation of the Greenhouse, the indoor and outdoor greening of York College is a project meant to raise awareness of the benefits of air-cleaning plants and the use of environmentally friendly materials. This project will create exterior lounge space for students by developing the unused plaza in front of the Performing Arts Center and plaza on the 160th street entrance to The Academic Core. These new exterior lounges will contain benches, plantings, and automated sprinkler systems for ease of maintenance. 7 Transform Learning Environments This project will provide multi-media upgrades to transform lecture hall 3D01 in the Academic Core building into a multi-media lecture hall. The renovation will include the installation of new fixed auditorium seating with oversized tablet arms and data and power ports for laptop computers, as well as ADA compliant stations. The hall will be equipped for multi-media presentations, distance learning, and video teleconferencing. The project will also provide new recording equipment for the College's Performing Arts Center.
