3 GENERAL POLICIES Music Lessons are generally a yearly commitment. A total of 25 half-hour lessons is the goal for We do realize, however, that extenuating circumstances do occur. Communication with the girl s music teacher is extremely important and strongly encouraged. 1 Instrument: Every student needs a properly maintained and tuned instrument for practice and her lesson or ensemble. For voice students, her voice is her instrument. 2 Practice: A minimum of minutes of practice every day is necessary if the student is to acquire any degree of skill on the instrument or learn the proper use of her voice. 3 Attendance: a students should be on time for their scheduled lessons and have all materials needed for the lesson. If a student is late for a lesson, she will lose valuable instruction time with her teacher. b missed lessons with a 24 hour advanced notice will be rescheduled. In case of illness, when the school is called, the student s music teacher should receive an . This includes doctor/dentist appointments and sporting events. Music teachers addresses are printed on page 4 of this Handbook. The music teacher will re-schedule a lesson if he/she knows in advance when the student will be absent for a lesson. Courtesy suggests awareness of the music teachers additional schedules and commitments. c any student who forgets to come to a lesson or forgets to notify her Music Teacher that she will be missing a lesson because of an appointment or a sporting event forfeits that lesson. If the school is closed due to a snow storm or other reasons, lessons scheduled on that day will be rescheduled. Those who prefer not to miss a class, will be rescheduled, if possible, during the month of May. 4 Withdrawal & Refund Policy for Independent Contractors: Guitar, Ukulele, Piano, Strings, Woodwinds, Percussion, and Voice Payment Option #1 (one installment) Withdrawal ---prior to the 4 th scheduled lesson in the fall 75% refund ---after the 4 th scheduled lesson in the fall 50% refund ---prior to the 4 th scheduled lesson in January 25% refund ---after the 4 th scheduled lesson in January no refund Payment Option # 2 (two installments) Withdrawal ---prior to the 4 th scheduled lesson of the term 50% refund ---after the 4 th scheduled lesson of the term no refund All fees for choir, handbells and tonechimes will be billed through FACTS Incidental Billing. 5 Voice: Miss Michelle Creamer Greco Coordinator of Music Activities: Sr. Margaret Logrip Villa Maria Academy CHOIR Information Choir enhances our Liturgical Celebrations. As a Catholic School, Liturgical Celebrations are a vital part of our Religious Education Program. Since one of Villa Maria Academy s goals is to educate young women in the IHM tradition of leadership and service, choir offers an opportunity to display leadership and give service. Choir members in Grades 4 to 8 will be providing the musical support for our school Masses. These singers will also perform in the Spring Show when they become a Show Choir and entertain through singing and creative movement. Choir members will be a vital part of Villa s annual Christmas Pageant. As choir these young women will use their voices to praise the Lord and be the leaders for congregational singing. As a Show Choir, they will use their voices and personalities to be theatrical in the annual Spring Show. Sr. Margaret and Miss Connors enjoy the opportunity to work with these young singers. Page 5
6 Learning the correct use of the voice so that it can function with ease, freedom, versatility and endurance without any discomfort to the throat is a major goal for a member of the choir. Join this exciting group and discover that God gave you a wonderful gift your voice. If you can talk you can sing! Membership in the Villa Maria Academy Choir is a yearly commitment. The fee for the Program is $ for the year billed in FACTS. Payment in full will be due by the end of October, Students in Grades 4 & 5 will rehearse with Sr. Margaret and Miss Connors in the Rehearsal Room on the Terrace Floor on Wednesday during the Scheduled Lunch/Recess Period 2 nd Lunch. Before a major performance (Christmas Pageant, Catholic Schools Week Liturgy, Spring Show) additional practices may be scheduled during the Lunch/Recess period. It is extremely important for the integrity of the group that all members are present at each rehearsal. Courtesy would insure that Sister or Miss Connors are informed if a student is unable to attend her scheduled choir session. The Archdiocesan Choral Festivals are scheduled for March 21, Villa auditions only Grade 5 Choir Members for the Festival Chorus. Choir Members in Grades 7 & 8 will be auditioned by members of the Archdiocesan Choral Festival Committee for the Honors Chorus and the Show Choir. An audition and dedication to the VILLA program are requirements for selection for participation. Specific details for Archdiocesan Festivals can be found on the Archdiocesan Music Website. Villa Maria Academy HANDBELL ENSEMBLE Information Villa Maria Academy TONECHIME ENSEMBLE Information The Handbell Ensemble is an instrumental group consisting of 11 to 13 performers and is open to students in Grades 6, 7 & 8. Students do not need prior musical experience to participate in this performing group. Learning the language of music (reading notes, interpreting rhythms & reading a musical score) is one of the goals of the Handbells Ensemble. Students in Grade 8 will be accepted after the annual Christmas Pageant. Girls who are interested in playing for the annual Page 7
8 Spring Show will receive a Registration Form and a reduction in the fee in January. The Tonechime Ensemble is an instrumental group consisting of 11 to 13 performers and is open to students in Grades 4 & 5. Students do not need prior musical experience to participate in this performing group. Learning the language of music (reading notes, interpreting rhythms & reading a musical scores) is one of the goals of the Tonechimes Ensemble. Membership in the Villa Maria Academy Handbell or Tonechime Ensembles is a yearly commitment. The fee for the Program is $ for the year. Payment in full will be due by the end of October, The students will have access to a three octave set of Handbells and/or Tonechimes, gloves for handling the Handbells and musical scores. Rehearsals for this group will take place on Thursday in the Music Rehearsal Room on the Terrace Floor during the Scheduled Lunch/Recess Period. The Handbell & Tonechime Ensembles will definitely be adding their unique and melodious sounds to the Christmas Pageant, some School Liturgies, and the Spring Show. The cost of lessons is $ for 25 private half hour sessions throughout the school year; plus 10 guitar & ukulele ensemble classes, scheduled once a month during lunch/recess. Page 11
12 You will be billed for the lessons, plus books, two times a year. Checks should be made payable to the guitar/ukulele teacher, Mr. Dominic Mastrangelo. Lessons are on Friday during the school day. Lessons rotate each week so that the girls do not miss the same class two weeks in a row. Before and after school lessons are also available at the same time each Friday. The weekly rotating schedule will be sent by Mr. Mastrangelo to the student s parents address. Students are expected to bring their music and instrument each lesson day. However, school does have a few guitars & ukuleles which the girls are able to use for their lessons if they are unable to bring their own instrument on a particular day. Students will have the opportunity to perform in a Guitar/Ukulele recital at Lower Villa and a recital with students from Upper Villa. This year, Vila Maria Academy Lower School Guitar & Ukulele students will present this recital on Monday, May 13, 2019 in the Projection Room at 7:00 PM. The girls are asked to wear their school uniform. 18 General Information 1 Eligibility: Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass lessons are available to students in grades 2 8. Students in grades 1 will be accepted after consultation with Mrs. Beatty, the child s classroom teacher, and Sr. Margaret. Woodwinds: lessons are available to students in grades 4 8. Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone Percussion: lessons are available to students in grades 4 8. Glockenspiel (metal keyboard played with 2 mallets) Ensemble: optional for all students, for an additional charge, who take lessons in or outside of Villa. 2 Available Lesson Times: Private lessons are offered on Monday and Thursday. During Lunch/Recess: Thursday Gr. 1-2: 12:00 12:30; Gr : 12:30 1:00; Gr : 1:00 1:30 After School: Monday & Thursday 3:00 3:30; 3:30 4:00; 4:00 4:30; 4:30 5:00 3 Ensemble: Thursday before School: Full Ensemble: 7:45 8:30 (Strings, Woodwinds, Percussion) 4 Fee: 25 lessons will be scheduled for each student. One 30 minute individual lesson is given per week. Lessons only $ Ensemble only $ Lessons and Ensemble $ Each student is expected to have her own instrument. Rentals are available through Music and Arts in Exton or Calliope Music in Ardmore or Menchey Music in Broomall. 8 Practice and other business: Daily practice is suggested. Consistency should be valued over length of practice time. Each student will be given a manuscript notebook and folder for sheet music. A dated list of practice steps will be written in the notebook each week. Students should bring their notebook, folder, and instrument to each lesson. If any of these were forgotten at home, the student should still attend the lesson. Page 18
19 Fees for the Lesson Books will be billed separately. The weekly lesson schedule will be ed to parents by Mrs. Beatty on the Friday prior to the next week s lessons. The String, Woodwind Percussion recital will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 7:00p in the Projection Room.
