6 Goals for Today Welcome all families to BMSS Help you feel at ease about the new school year Learn expectations for BMSS that ensure our campus is safe and efficient Submit state mandated shot records Receive lockers and combinations Purchase athletic and PE attire Join PTO Transportation questions (New Routes, InfoFinder system) in the Library Self guided campus tour Purchase agenda/planner $5
7 When you arrive where do you go? The gates and campus open at 8:00 AM o Students who arrive prior to this time wait at the front of the school o Parents, there is no supervision prior to 8:00 AM Breakfast is served in the cafeteria beginning at 8:00 AM. Otherwise proceed to: o 6 th grade: Cafeteria o 7 th grade: Competition Gym o 8 th grade: Courtyard Tutoring is available before school from 8:05-8:35; the schedule will be posted soon o Parents, this is an opportunity for your child to get extra help, make up assignments, etc.
8 The bell rings at 8:35 8:35 8:45 - Locker time o Chargers will put away backpacks, lunch boxes, and cell phones Parents, please do not call or text your child during the school day. If you need to get a message to them, please call the office. 8:45 - TARDY bell rings, 1 st or 5 th periods o Parents be aware your children are TARDY if they are not in their seats in the classroom at 8:45. Repeated tardiness will result in discipline consequences & missed instruction.
9 Late Morning Arrival & Class Tardies Arrival to school or class after 8:45 is considered a tardy. There is a five-minute passing period between classes There is a grace period for tardies the first few weeks of school so that we can all get acquainted with our schedules and travel patterns. Chargers who arrive to a class 20 minutes or more late without an excused pass will be counted absence for the class. Disciplinary consequences may result from class truancy. Please see the student agenda/planner for consequences for tardies
10 State-Mandated Compulsory Attendance Attendance is taken very seriously by the state, BISD, and BMSS. Middle school attendance is taken every period each A day & B day. Chargers with absences falling below 90% attendance in one or more classes are in jeopardy of failing that class per state law. *If a student s attendance in a class dips below 90%, Saturday School Attendance Recovery is mandated. *2 or more academic class failures in a year result in automatic, mandatory retention per district policy.
11 Where does the time go? 1 st / 5 th Period 8:45-10:10 2 nd /6 th Period 10:15-11:45 3rd/ 7th Period 1 st Lunch 11:50-12:20 (Class time-12:25-1:50) 2 nd Lunch 12:30-1:00 (Class time-11:50-12:30 & 1:05-1:50) 3 rd Lunch 1:15-1:45 (Class time-11:50-1:15) Study Hall 1:55-2:30 4 th /8 th Period 2:35-4:00
12 LUNCHES during 3rd & 7th period Dismissed from class by teacher to lunch Chargers WALK to and from the cafeteria Chargers must be seated in their own seat (no sharing) Once seated, Chargers raise their hand to get up Chargers clean their area and throw away all trash Chargers wait to be dismissed from cafeteria by an adult
13 3rd/7th periods and lunch 5 minute social time in courtyard o Only water leaves the cafeteria other drinks or food stay inside o Chargers exhibit proper behavior in the courtyard area o For safety purposes: Chargers don t bring balls and other equipment to lunch Chargers stay on sidewalks and paved areas - STAY OUT OF MULCH Chargers don t throw things Chargers WALK to class when the whistle blows to end lunch
14 In order to respect classes going on there are some Kid Free Areas During Lunch & Social Time B Building E Building
15 Study Hall 1:55 2:30 EVERY student is assigned to a study hall class o Only class that students will have EVERY day. School related materials, report cards, etc. are distributed during this class. o Class meetings are held during this time. o Character education is taught during study hall. o Students will stay in their study hall class so they need to come prepared.
16 After School BUS RIDERS - report to the back of the school by E wing o Chargers board the buses if it is waiting in line o Chargers have a seat on the covered sidewalk if the bus has not arrived o Chargers throw away all trash CAR RIDERS - report to the front of the school o Be watching for your car & wait for the car to arrive in front of the building entrance o Board the car quickly o Be safe, don t walk in front of cars o All students must use crosswalk and wait until SRO permits to cross for outside lane We do not release students to the tennis court side nor the Kendall side of the building as this area is not an approved safe location The AMC Theater has requested that no students be picked up on their property.

18 Walk This Way... Chargers walk on the right side of the hallway o Maintain proper traffic flow patterns in school building in order to avoid congestion o Follow the BLUE arrows and one way signs that will indicate one way areas Chargers WALK to class and the cafeteria Chargers use sidewalks, walkways, and the blacktop let the grass grow Chargers stay out of landscaping Chargers throw away trash even if it is not yours--be the Change! Chargers are respectful to all adults and students
19 Daily Tidbits 6 th and 7 th graders will keep cell phones in their lockers 8 th graders will keep phones in backpacks. They must be turned off. Pick up table o A pickup table is in the front office in case parents need to bring their student something after the school day begins. Chargers must carry agenda/planner with them at all times. It will be used for passing in the hall and must be signed by the teacher.
20 Charger Change Charger Change certificates are awarded to students for doing something that makes a positive impact on our campus. Our faculty and staff will be on the lookout for actions that exemplify what it means to be a BMSS Charger. Charger Change can be redeemed for items from our Charger Change store or for privileges from campus administration or classroom teachers. *Charger Change store every two weeks on Thursday during lunches
21 Charger Dress Code and Grooming The district s dress code is established o to teach grooming and hygiene o to prevent class disruptions o to minimize safety hazards Highlighted Items Students must not have unnatural extremes in hair color or style. o *No Mohawks, Fauxhawks, shavings in hair, etc. Must not wear jeans or pants with excessive holes, holes above the fingertips, or pants that are baggy and worn below the hip. Girls must wear dresses, skirts, and shorts that extend at least fingertip length on all sides. Biker shorts/ tights, Jeggings, Yoga Pants, or leggings may be worn underneath shorts, skirts, or shirts that meet the fingertip length guidelines. Best advice: If you are not sure, ask before you wear it *Specifics can be found in the BMSS Student Planner and the BISD Student Handbook.
22 Important Dates First day of school o Monday, August 20, 2018 Parent Night o Tuesday September 4, :00-7:00 pm School Pictures o September 27 and 28 (Social Studies class) o Retakes are on November 2, 2018 Finals are Dec 19-21, 2018 o All students take finals o Plan vacations after these dates o NO early exams are given
23 Schedule Change Form This form can be found in front office. Returned it to the front office. Counselors will make every effort to accommodate all students This form is a request, but does not guarantee a schedule change. *Due to continued enrollment, options are extremely limited. Schedule changes may not occur until after the first week of school.
