2 CPIT Overview CPIT is one of New Zealand s largest and most diverse government tertiary institutions, with a history of over 100 years of providing high quality education in Christchurch. The main campus is in central Christchurch, a dynamic, cosmopolitan city of about 400,000. Each year approximately 25,000 students attend part-time or full-time courses at CPIT. While the majority are local students, CPIT also hosts growing numbers of international students from over 50 countries. On average there are 1600 international students enrolled each year in s across the institution. The CPIT School of English Language was established in 1988 and runs s in general English, academic English, preparation for international examinations in English and teacher training. The school provides tailor-made s to overseas institutions, combining the expertise of the English teaching staff with that of staff from other areas such as adult education, business, nursing and tourism. Programmes are provided for a range of institutions and agencies from Korea, Japan, Brazil, China, Thailand, Spain, Indonesia, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

3 Programme Content Aims To enable students to develop general English language skills so that they can function with confidence in a range of situations To introduce students to New Zealand lifestyle through living in a New Zealand homestay To introduce students to aspects of New Zealand culture, society and business through visits to local companies and experience of cultural activities Placement On arrival students will be tested in English and then placed in a general English class of the appropriate level according to their proficiency. Studying alongside other international students means that in each class there is a greater mix of nationalities so students are less likely to use their native language and have many opportunities to interact with people from other countries. Another important benefit of integrating students is that the students learning needs can be better addressed as each individual is placed in a class of appropriate level. During morning classes students will study English grammar, lexis and pronunciation integrated with the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Teaching will be both interactive and communicative in style and will involve the students working in groups, individually, in discussions and in simulated role plays. s will also have access to a large range of resources at the Languages Self Access Centre which is part of the Library. The customised afternoon will focus on language use in the IT industry and include visits to local companies involved in IT and computing as well as cultural experiences. s will keep a reflective journal of their observations and give weekly on relevant topics. 5 Facilities s will have access to all the facilities and services provided by CPIT including: Library Computer access - free 24-hour and internet use Language Self-Access centre where students can study in their own time Full-time international student advisor Korean Counsellor/Advisor on campus Homestay advisor available on request Cafés and restaurant on campus Health centre Recreation centre Bookshop ATM Accommodation Homestays home-stays will be organized by a local company specializing in looking after overseas students. New Zealand homestay providers have a reputation for being friendly, hospitable and generous with their time to students. All students are asked to complete a detailed application form before departure from their country. From this form, information relating to students and prospective families will be carefully examined to ensure suitable placements. The fee includes three meals a day Monday to Sunday.

6 Off campus visits and Cultural Activities From 1 to 3pm on selected afternoons, students will have the opportunity to visit a local attraction, join in a cultural activity or visit a local business. s will learn about the ICT precinct planned in the new city development and how CPIT staff and students will be involved in this project. s will also learn about exciting software development companies and global IT companies operating in Christchurch. Willowbank Wildlife Reserve Willowbank is one of New Zealand s top tourist attractions. s are given a tour of NZ Wildlife which includes the kiwi and other endangered species and learn about the work being done to preserve them. In the remaining time at Willowbank, students are free to visit other areas in this peaceful haven; a 20 minute drive from central Christchurch. Canoeing on the Avon This has been a favourite activity for Christchurch families for 125 years. s can choose to canoe or kayak through the very picturesque Christchurch Botanic Gardens. All vessels are safe and experienced guides provide full instructions. International Antarctic Centre s will learn about the Great White Continent and the wildlife that inhabits this region of the earth. Different areas of the Antarctic Centre can be explored, including the New Zealand Penguin Encounter attraction. The Canterbury Museum The museum has a world renowned collection of treasures. A special has been designed for international students. The focus of the visit is on early New Zealand settlement, particularly in Canterbury and students can visit a Victorian Christchurch street, Maori exhibits and an extensive Antarctic collection.

Method of payment An invoice will be sent on acceptance of this quotation. Payment on invoice should be made in full at least 10 days before course commencement by bank draft or telegraphic transfer.

8 Weekend Excursions (cost not included) Day trip to Akaroa Akaroa is a small, picturesque fishing settlement, about 90 minutes drive from Christchurch through stunning mountain and coastal scenery. The township was settled by the French in the 1830s and retains much of its early French history. It is a beautiful place to stroll around, with plentiful shops and other attractions. s can buy lunch in one of the excellent restaurants or cafes. There is also a very good museum, an art gallery and an historic lighthouse walk. The main attraction is a wildlife cruise by modern catamaran to view dolphins, seals, penguins and other animals. This cruise is included in the cost of the day trip. Cost: approximately $120 per student This includes: transport to Akaroa and return a harbour cruise and dolphin watching visit to a cheese factory One day farm visit Rubicon Valley is a working high country farm, near Springfield about 50 minutes south east of Christchurch. s studying at CPIT who have visited Rubicon Valley have enjoyed the experience and we are happy to recommend it for those who wish to experience rural New Zealand. 9 Weekend Excursions (cost not included) Hanmer Hot Springs Hanmer Springs Village is New Zealand's premier alpine spa destination. Located in North Canterbury about 90 minutes from Chrischurch, Hanmer Springs is best known for the award-winning Hanmer Springs thermal pools and spa. There are a range of pools - twelve open-air thermal pools, three sulphur pools and six private indoor thermal pools, as well as a sauna/steam room. The freshwater, heated swimming pool has resort style walk-in beach access and a Lazy River. With a bounteous supply of thermally heated spring water, the pools range in temperature from Celsius - perfect for soothing away aches and pains or for just unwinding.
