4 We are the national association of English language teaching centres, with more than 440 members accredited by the British Council. As part of gaining a UK student visa, English language students should enrol on a course with an accredited language centre. Introducing English UK English UK Agents Guide Our members are accredited by the Accreditation UK scheme, which is managed by the British Council in partnership with English UK. The scheme checks and improves standards of teaching, management, facilities and welfare provision. Members include private language schools, educational trusts, charities and language centres in further education colleges and universities. Over the last decade, we have also established ourselves as the voice of the English language teaching sector. With a wide range of partners and stakeholders, we represent the English language profession in the UK and abroad, lobbying governments, running training events and workshops and attending exhibitions worldwide. Our main goal is to advance the education of international students in the English language. This includes: Quality assurance Supporting quality English language courses, primarily through Accreditation UK. Professional development for the English language teaching (ELT) sector Quality training for ELT staff, consultancy and research. Representing members Lobbying for our members, in the UK and around the world. Marketing Promoting our members, and the UK as a study destination, through working with agents and connecting with prospective students. Business services for members Advice and support on business issues. English UK has a number of special interest groups that showcase the diversity of what the UK has to offer: Business English UK The group of accredited training centres that specialise in English courses for business and professional purposes. Work Experience UK The group of accredited English UK members that provide study and work programmes. Young Learners English UK Representing English UK members that provide English language courses for young learners aged 7 to 17. Building partnerships with UK educators English UK Agents Guide Accreditation UK is the largest English language teaching quality assurance scheme in the world. Approved by the British government, it is the only guarantee of high-quality learning and value for money in the UK. To be accredited, education providers must go through regular assessments carried out by a team of independent experts. Inspections are based on rigorous standards, with more observation of teaching than in any other accreditation scheme. In simple terms, candidates ensure they are making the very best investment for their future by enrolling on one of our accredited courses. We operate a complaints procedure and Student Emergency Support Fund for emergency assistance. Complaints against English language centres are rare, but if a student is experiencing problems there are established processes to help. Each accredited centre has an internal complaints procedure in place and we are able to offer further independent support if it is required. If an accredited centre closes before a student has finished their course again, a rare occurrence English UK s Student Emergency Support Fund will minimise the inconvenience caused. Students can complete their learning on a similar course with a nearby accredited centre at no additional cost. The fund also covers other money that may have been lost for example, on accommodation. 6

Participation in these 3-day events held around the world is limited to just 70 organisations (30 educators and 40 agencies) and is only open to English UK member centres and selected top quality agents. Inward missions Our missions give agents opportunities to gain direct experience of English language education in the UK. Trips are free once you have travelled to the UK, and they include visits to language centres and locations, workshops and networking. Overseas events We take part in major education fairs around the world, schedule overseas visits and run briefing sessions on developments in the UK s English language training sector.
